just think if aapl started an ai program instead of aapl car program back when
instead of aapl leading in ai - it has to partner with aothers for ai

Kinda smells of desperation. The fact that Apple was asleep at the wheel, pumping millions into a non-existant car is a disgrace. Doesn't the board realise that it's time for Jeff Williams to takeover now?!

I’m not surprised given apples lack of progress with Siri and most of their software and services. Mid life lethargy has set in and there is no second coming of Steve jobs that we can see.

I am actually relieved that Apple is behind the curve when it comes to on-device AI, as it seems quite clear where this is heading in the Windows 11 department: Everything you need to know about Microsoft's upcoming defining AI PC feature

I am absolutely certain that Apple wants something similar on their devices, i.e. background processed 24-hour user telemetry repackaged as AI capabilities to "enhance" your workflow. You can rest assured that these AI features will be optimized to increase Apple's profit margins, rather than actual usefulness.

For those claiming that this means that Apple doesn’t have any AI, you are thinking too narrowly of AI=chatbot.

From the hints we have seen and from Apples history with AI over the last few years, I expect a modular approach to AI with different levels and integrations; some on device and some on server.

  1. Feature level AI in apps and OS that handles specific functions. This will probably be like the existing AI (aka machine learning) app features like facial recognition in photos, photo search, typing suggestions, etc. Expect more as well as more apps to expose functionality via the App Intents interface so they can be automated.
  2. Server-based generative AI - ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini, etc. These are inherently server-based because they depend on massive, external data sources and heavy-duty processing. These are the easiest to farm out to third-party for specific types of requests and can be replaced later if Apple decides to build out their own infrastructure. The volume of requests from Apple devices is likely larger than any one provider is willing to take on, so Apple may be talking to multiple providers to distribute the load.
  3. On-device AI: This would be locally processed AI to interact with the user, understand their intent, and find matching services to satisfy those needs. This would probably use models like Ferret AI to work with information on device or to reach out to get data where needed. It would allow a much easier way to automate operations using multiple apps. This could be the kind of AI that powers an all new Siri.
I don’t know how much of this will be ready by June. Some may need more time in the oven, but it’s going to be a big change.

You are very wrong. You've been using AI (the subset called ML - machine learning) for decades with Apple tech.

This new era is a separate field called "generative" AI and it's only just beginning.
  • Did Apple miss the boat on personal computing? This existing before the Mac.
  • Did Apple miss the boat on MP3 players? They existed long before the iPod.
  • Did Apple miss the boat on "smart" cellphones? They existed long before iPhone.
There's no missing the boat when it comes to Apple. The boat just doesn't always set sail when we want it to.
Did they miss the boat on the Internet? Web browsers came out before Apple build one as Safari and released the open-source code as WebKit.

Pathetic effort by Apple. 3 TB company can’t build their own LLM? Instead Tim Cook all in on the failed Vision Pro. What a mess.
What makes you so sure that Apple hasn’t built an LLM? This article is about generative AI, which is just function that an LLM can do and it still need server-based processing. Other LLMs can do things that work on device.

Experts in the AI field often cringe when people use "artificial intelligence" too specifically. It's a very broad umbrella term with MANY different sub-fields under it. When you type on your iPhone keyboard, that's employing a form of AI called Machine Learning (ML). When you take a photo with your iPhone, that's applying machine learning. And the list goes on...

Machine learning research dates back to the 60's and 70's. It's just that "AI" sounds so cool, it gets used to describe it when in fact many types of machine learning are not "intelligent" at all.

What is true intelligence? The ability to make new decisions based on old decisions, reinforcing those old decisions even further.

The definition of insanity: "Making the same choices over and over, but expecting a different outcome". Each decision made is adding reinforcement to neural pathways.

Could you imagine if our computers became truly insane? It's only a matter of time...!

The word price has been incorrectly replaced with price point.
The word size has been incorrectly replaced with form factor.
The word use has been incorrectly replaced with use case.
And we are now working on changing an if statement to AI.

It might be a strategy to use “third party” first and see where this AI thing goes. If it’s indeed a success then just develop their own and change it under the hood. The average Apple customer doesn’t care how the tech works, Apple will brand it nicely and that what will matter.

Btw, some people think all this AI stuff is just another IT-bubble type of thing. In the end it’s just more complex code than usual…

Like some 10 years ago everyone talked about internet of things (IoT) which in the end was just glorified digitalization or system integration…

The first iPhone sold 300,000 the first week. Now they sell many millions. It’s a first iteration. The first Apple Watch didn’t sell well either. It is a long game. No one expects instant success except people like you.

Reading some of these comments really shows you how easy it is to manipulate people. A news reporter says whatever he wants and people either become outraged or excited as if it were fact. It is pathetic, but you see how easy is happens.

He has no knowledge of these discussions. These would be high level meetings with higher ups on both ends. Do you think any of those involved would leak information to this knucklehead? He can say whatever he wants, and his “sources” can’t be verified.

And anyone that thinks Apple is making short term decisions to try to “catch up” is a fool. They don’t manage this way at all. There is value to AI, but not nearly to the extent that it is being made out to be. I believe Apple has carefully looked at this for years and will be rolling out the plan they’ve worked on for some time, and not reacting to the irrational frenzy that is unfolding around them.

what if they stop running after this stupid ai thing and try to innovate like 15-20 years ago?

I think the younger gen call this ‘copium’.

They’re great, seem to have coined a phrase for everything.

Bit old of a source indeed
Rumors are NOT sources. Your post was stated as fact. Also they are likely to limit some functions to newer iPhones for sure. Some would be to make people more likely to upgrade and some is due to processor limitations.

You're right. I'm just hoping it doesn't turn out to be true .

Yeah if it's actually due to professor limitations I could hear that, but if it's something that's purely cloud and that the powerhouse that is the a17 can handle it but they make it exclusive for lucrativity purposes ...idk that's nasty especially if it's a lifesaver feature and not bells and whistles

I don't care about creative AI, I mostly want summarizations and speech recognition etc

Time will tell

This sounds like a lot of last-minute scrambling.

Oh to be a fly on the wall after Tim learns of all this AI talk and asks where’s their progress.

I bet he brought out his inner Jobs on them.

WWDC will be a strange software story if Apple presents all of these AI features they are building and then just says “oh, yeah, you won’t get any of this unless you buy a phone we haven’t announced, yet”. That seems very unlikely and counterproductive.

There is nothing predicted for the new devices that is so new and so big a change that it runs software that most older devices couldn’t also run. It also would be too disruptive and antagonizing the artificially limit such an important part of their plans to be competitive. Most likely situation is that newer hardware runs it faster and older hardware runs it slower. That is an easy to understand limitation.

Please don‘t mention webkit. It is just another example how stupid and stubborn Apple is. Yes, Apple took khtml and build webkit on top of it. With webkit2, nothing of khtml was left, so ot is clearly Apples product and was the leading smartphone browser and changed the world, killed flash. Great!

But Apple never managed to roll out a working Windows or Linux version. Has always been a terrible experience to use Safari on Windows.

Then Google showed up, cloned Webkit and created Blink and Chrome/Chromium and dozens of other browsers running on top of it. Chrome is the leading browser today - Apple „could“ have don this, but it failed terrible. Chrome today runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Next, Microsoft cloned Chrome and created Edge. The Edge browser today runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The edge browser is also popular on macOS, while Safari turned into a buggy thing. Safari still has a huge marketshare, cause of the fact that it is the only browser running on iOS, but the EU changed that.

OMG, Apple!!!
