Apple seems to be reluctant to openly take on Microsoft and the PC world like they once did. The Macintosh and OS X receives almost no advertising or publicity (in Australia at least), let alone any type of aggressive "Sick of all that Windows crap, then try OS X" form of advertising. I'm sure Apple has their reasons...maybe the relatively low-key relaunch of the Switch site is in keeping with them.

I think it's just there to appease the Mac addicts. Apple has being trying to get masses of switchers for 20 years now and I'm sure they've realized it doesn't work on any large scale.

I can guarantee you it will not be that high. (Are you a betting man? :p ;)) Apple's market share is what, approximately 3% right now? That would be over a 300% increase, which would be far too great of an upward swing to realize in such a short period of time. It's just simple math and economics.

True, I should have specified. Apple (portable) market share is at 4.99. http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/03/20/marketshare/index.php I think that with the new mouse, and ibooks with more included things + the ipod rebate, people will be more inclined to buy.

But if only apple could make a tv commercial that explains all about os x, Apple would have a higher market share overall. Is it me or is Apple affraid of putting themselves out on the line, like they are affraid of being successfull and getting more people realize whats better and buying more product.

If only they had tv advertisements. . . *sighs*

Would seem silly to do a switch advertisement until there has been the chip switch. But then Microsoft customers will soon be "forced" to make a switch as well.

If anyone managed to download the Christopher Guest switch ad that briefly appeared on the Erol Morris site before it got hit so hard he pulled them all let me know. I did manage to see the Will Ferrell one about the hot dog vendor and the iPod before it timed out.

Lovely pages :)

Among the 10 reasons given by Apple on their new site to switch, I find number 7 the most interesting:

"Enthusiast. Fan. Addict. Ever hear a PC user described this way? When you buy an Apple computer, you realize why so many people who try a Mac never go back. And then you begin talking to those people, sharing stories, getting advice. The Apple user community enjoys support from all sides: the Genius in the Apple store, the musician on that message board, the photographer next door. They all share a common bond forged by one decidedly uncommon computer."

Yea, I agree with you. Nice reason ;) :D

The situation today--and especially in half a year--is not the same as ever before in the past 20 years.

Can anyone who've tried this approach to moving iTunes music (from here) tell me if this preserves play count and/or ratings:
iTunes Music Library
Even if your music resides on an iPod, you still have to copy it from your PC to your Mac. Your iPod will not let you copy music files from it to another computer. Your iTunes Music Library generally resides in your “My Documents > My Music” folder.

1. Launch iTunes on your Mac.
2. Select the File menu and choose Add to Library...
3. When the dialog box opens, navigate to the folder on your PC containing all your music.
4. Click Choose. iTunes will automatically organize the songs and place them into the proper folder on your Mac.

Old news: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/142324/

Already posted on MacBytes....3 days ago.

Wish we could lock this thread like they do to us when we don't search the forums... :D

Yeah it's getting real old. Why visit a site everyday when you've already read the same news 3 days earlier? All I've read on this site lately is "AppleInsider reports..." Matter of fact, I'm just going to end it now and bookmark AppleInsider in place of MacRumors. All re-reading everyone else's news is doing is wasting my time. Why run a rumor web site if you can't report anything original.

Apple UK is still living in the dark ages....

Same with Apple Germany. Half of the pages are not even translated...

If they ever want to be serious about gaining market share outside of the US... but then again they're not. They have proven that many times.

Yeah, that's true. There's a remote possiblity that Apple will change their entire business model and be able to lure a fair amount of PC users to their platform but it ain't gonna happen. Apple sold 4.5 million machines in 2000 and now they're finally getting back to that mark while PC's are selling over 60% more than they were in 2000. I don't see how Mactel is going to do anything but make Macs more expensive and cause Apple to lose sales when the Mac OS gets cracked to run on any X86 box.

I don't see how Apple's X86 transition is going to be anything but rough on consumers. Unless Adobe, Apple, Macromedia, and Microsoft plan on giving their current Mac customers free X86 version of their Pro software then we're going to see another drove of reverse switchers when Vista comes out. The same thing happened in 2000 when Apple put out 10.0 and Microsoft put out Windows 2000. That was really the first time audio, video, print, and web professionals started looking at Windows as a real alternative to the traditional Mac setup. The entire market of creative professionals on windows was created right then.

Unless Apple works some serious magic with Leopard that keeps it from being buggy (like Tiger) and slow on x86 then they'll get rolled over by Vista. the Tiger to XP gap is as big a lead as Apple is ever going to have and they aren't doing much with it. Windows releases just keep getting better (2000, XP, win2k3, x64) and Vista is looking the same way.

Windows x64 is running ridiculously fast and Vista Beta 1 runs even faster in addition to having real color management and a low latency audio system for the first time. It's not looking good for Apple.

The best thing Apple could do right now is make a all out move to something much better. Take the offer from Sun and base Mac OS 11 on Solaris (extremely fast and advanced), develop Star Office into a real MS Office competitor and make a really really fast version of OS 11 for X86. When people see a relatively unoptimized Leopard running adobe and Macromedia products at half the speed of Vista it won't be very appealing. Apple make it happen!!!!!

I've never really looked through the Apple switch site much, but this caught my eye as pretty ridiculous: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/cheatsheet/ I surely hope everyone is using their friendly mac cheatsheet. Luckily they warn you to store this in a safe and secure place.
This picture on the "connect" page looks horrible!

UGH! SO 80's... What are they trying to say? Macs work with old crap, cameras and the iPod mini?

Infact the whole thing is out of date. They should really work on that section.

I'd say that the fact that OS X has had these features for 5 years (core audio, quartz(?) ) means that they've been doing the right things. They've just got to be careful not to let it stagnate.

Maybe it's because this is the first time I've had the feeling that Apple is sounding snobbish. I've always liked the fact that they're better than Windows, and they know it - but they don't really have to point it out. Now the language they're using is just ridiculous. Things like "well, you wouldn't be switching if Windows was easy to use, would you?" - this sing-song semi-sarcastic language just makes me feel sick.

Maybe it's only on the American site because the rest of the world would instantly lose respect for Apple if they saw it!

Maybe they are trying to say that macs work with things other than items on the bleeding edge of technology???

or maybe they are just lazy...:D

I totaly agree with you, if Apple were to actually launch a world wide campaign without being obnoxious they'd gain 2% marketshare easily. .mac isn't even translated into anything else than Japanese. How hard can that be? This is one thing I will never understand. And where is the deal with other dictionaries to be used with OS X besides the Oxford one? The architecture is there, so where is it?
These are the little things that just annoy me with Apple.

Exactly. Up until now (or when Vista comes out next year) Apple has dominated the music and print domains because of superior technology. They won't have that after Vista is released.

Apple had the same kind of lead in video and film production up until Windows 2000 showed up and since then Microsoft has started winning that area. Avid and Adobe barely spend any development dollars on the Mac platform anymore (in video/film). It's a shame that all Avid High-def systems only run on Windows now when they all used to be Mac based.

Digidesign (part of Avid now) has been moving more towards Windows every year. IIRC their new Pro Tools Venue systems run on XP only and Pro Tools is supposed to be superior on Windows now.

I think the same will probably happen in music and print now too.

True

Ive just been taking a look at the new site and found an all out attack on XP:

Oh, and Mac OS X doesn’t scream “hardware detected” every time you plug in something as basic as a keyboard. Just start typing.
Mac OS X will not interrupt your work — or play — nagging you to clean up your desktop
Nor will it lead you through an endless conversation with a so-called wizard.

I'm sure someone had fun writing that.
:)

Hmm, think that's the first gold iPod mini I've seen in ooo, a year?
