True. It's fugly though...

Is there a good (better than apple) wide gamut monitor on the market that looks good too? ideally silver and black...

Look at Barco, Eizo or NEC.

I've used Barco monitors before - exceptional output. Exceptional price, too.

While I would love to have the 24" HP 1920x1200 glossy monitor I use at work (which I only use with a unibody MBP) replaced with this, I'm not really interested in this for my personal use for a number of reasons:

* Resolution is a step backwards from the 30" 2560x1600. I prefer 16:10 (or even 4:3) because I value vertical space more than horizontal as I'm mostly viewing vertically flowing documents (web pages, code, etc). I can live with this since the vertical resolution is better than the monitors I currently use.
* Glossy display. I prefer matte, but I can live with this.
* The deal breaker: only one input and its Mini-Displayport. At home, I have three different machines I want to use the monitor with. Two have DVI ports only, and I bring my work machine home which has Mini-Displayport. If this had two HDMI ports in addition to Mini-Displayport it would be perfect. AFAIK, Apple has never made displays with multiple inputs, though, and that's disappointing.

If there were some sort of KVM that could handle my scenario (and reliably at that) that would be nice, but I'm sure such a device would cost several hundred dollars at least, at which point I might as well spend a little bit more and get a 30" 2560x1600 matte display (e.g. Dell 3008WFP) that supports multiple inputs.

Though, for someone who only has a single Mac (with no plans on ever using more than one on the monitor) that is new enough to have Mini DisplayPort, this seems like a nice option. Magsafe connector is a nice option for laptops, and sound going through Mini Displayport is kinda cool. The price is not bad, either; at least at the moment it seems to be competitive.

True enough, but the point was that super resolution displays do exist.

"No one makes a panel with that resolution."

The point was that no one makes a display at 3840x2400. Maybe someone does, but not them.

If you're going to play gotcha, make sure you get them... ;)

Oh dear - Gloss only. I won't be buying a new Cinema Display at this rate.

Wonder what the chances of them doing a matte version at a later date?

The one thing that gives me hope that they will is the fact the the other 2 displays are going to be discontinued. I wouldn't be able to see them giving a matte option for all 3 displays but if there is only one, then maybe, especially when you consider they give the option on the macbook Pros. It would make sense for them to do that, because if someone buys a matte macbook pro then they aren't going to want a glossy monitor to go with it because they never would have bought the matte macbook pro in the first place.

I remember when the macbook pros came out they never advertised the matte option, heck i didn't even know it had an aluminum bezel until i saw one (Makes sense that it would have a matte bezel) so i'm hoping its the same thing, they flaunt the upcoming glossy display because it is most appealing to the casual consumer (main market) but still will offer a choice for others.

You mean like this one?

That is lower resolution than 3840x2400.

3840*2400 = 9216000
4096*2160 = 8847360

And it's $60k, making it moot to this discussion.

Thank you Analog Kid

Thanks again Analog Kid

Also let's not forget xStep that I did write:

...show me an LG, Samsung, or Panasonic LED display at 32" with a resolution at what you're asking for.

Now I can also ask: "At a reasonable, and consumer price."

Length of the cable?

Will the 27" Monitor have a short cable like the 24" which I happen to own.

Text too tiny on 27" Monitor?

With the higher resolution on the 27" monitor will text be too small? Remember, Snow Leopard is not resolution independent.

waiting for portrait...

Looks awesome but would it kill them to let you go into portrait mode? Maybe I'm dumb and missing something, but it seems impossible to go into portrait mode without mounting on a wall or something else.

Love the monitor and shall be getting it.. But what a shame not available until September..

I hate waiting for things :p

Holy moly...Apple's really gone off the deep end if they think they can sell it to graphics pros who insist on matte...glass over a screen if you have any sort of fluorescent lighting is horrid. Back when I bought a dual G5, I couldn't afford a Cinema Display, but wanted one badly. Now I could afford one, but simply don't want it. Go figure.

27" matte, need I say more?

Anyone else notice this is a different height than the 27" imac, i.e. won't look level on a desk?

I currently have the Apple 30", but I'm seriously considering getting the 27"... I'm looking for text clarity, brightness, and overall clarity/sharpness... Which one is better? I'm not a graphic designer and glare in my office is a non-issue. Do I keep the 30 or sell it to get the 27?

I wish they made a display as sharp as the display on my iPhone 4! I can't find a single pixel! When I look closely at the 30", the text is pretty blurry.

I could never bring myself to spend that much on a damn monitor

Fair enough, it's pricey.

On the other hand, it is the part of the setup that you interact with the most. Having a top notch monitor, keyboard, and chair makes sitting in front of these damn things 8 hours a day almost tolerable. (Mind you, I didn't realize I was supposed to hate the glossy screen; I actually thought the glossy was a little easier to deal with in direct sunlight.)

And thumbs up for the environmentally aware crowd. It all adds up.

Never had a problem sitting in front of my dual TN panels at work. They cost about 199$ each, I sit in front of them for 8 hours a day, been doing so for the last 12 years (obviously, not the same monitors, but never expensive IPS displays).

Seriously, cheap monitors are good enough if you're not doing graphic work. To think buying this is an "investment" is wrong. In the end, after 4 defect LED ACDs 24", I learned that it just wasn't for me. Apple kept it, I bought a cheap TN, does everything as nice and if it did have a dead pixel or a spec of dust stuck under the screen, I wouldn't have given a damn.
