True. It's fugly though...

Is there a good (better than apple) wide gamut monitor on the market that looks good too? ideally silver and black...

Not that I know of. To be honest with you, you'll have to choose between cute/overprices/limited functionality and extremely functional/well spec'd/well priced.

Sadly, the Apple displays are priced very well, and the high end Eizos and others are as well, but will cost you much more, and won't be very ..... "cute"

Maybe, but as a consumer who is eco-conscious I work hard in educating people in how we can all make a difference. A lot of talk on MacRumors and other tech sites overlook the fact that Apple is leading the industry with regard to eco-friendlier products. All the complaints on specs from so many (and I highly doubt 90+% of the commentators on MacRumors need even half of what they demand) just demonstrates the unnecessary need for power hungry systems. Most would get by very well with the quad core iMac.

I would rather be mocked for enlightening others than sitting by and letting things continue.
I can live with getting a non-Apple monitor and making up for it with many other habits. I haven't driven at all this week. Does that count?

If you don't agree with environmental issues, fine, but mocking me with  is really unnecessary.

But you said you didn't mind being mocked. :D
Next up is LED light bulbs.

Protip: They're terrible.

I have a clothes line outdoors and a drying rack inside the attic. I'm not sure what else I can throw in about my terrible Dell monitor buying habits. I can't win at everything I do to save the environment.

LOL true dat, but I will call out unnecessary comments :D

Impressive, that's more than what most people would do. Personally I purchase aluminum and glass products, recycle about 75% of my garbage and use a compost for the rest. I sell or give away items I don't need, use dimmers on all my lights (I agree, those energy efficient lights are awful), and I use electronics I know are eco-consciously sound (not just Apple). However, I do drive a non-eco friendly car (Infiniti FX 50), so um, yeah, kinda need to work on that lol.

(Braces for mocking comments lol)

They still make the 30" Matte. Still an awesome display after all these years.

Yeah, but I don't need a 30" display. 24" would do me fine - heck even 21.5" would do me.

Can't expect people who hate glossy to fork out for a 30" display.

If you don't have one you'd better grab one while you can. Both the current 24" and 30" ACDs are being discontinued.

Where you hear that..?

Apple Please Listen

We love a new LED screen but as working photographers and designers we do not want a shinny screen. We want a state of the art matte screen. Please provide us with this type of screen.

John Gruber today:

That guy is more of a moron then Ken Rockwell is for the photo world.

He does have a slight point, but that's just too far a stretch.

I don't think Apple can afford to piss off it's customers even more by discontinuing a modest Apple monitor that's finally at a decent price.

Remember, Apple isn't that much of a professional company anymore. They sell products to average joes and janes now. If you want top end, you'll have to look somewhere else.

Oh dear..

Apple better release a 21.5" Cinema Display in September too, not to mention they have to offer matte versions.

I honestly believe that Apple will never offer a matte option on an ACD ever. It'll only be an option on the 15" and 17" MBPs for an extra fee.

The ACDs will also never have anything but USB ports on the back, crippling the usefulness that was in the original ACDs.

Keep in mind, that the previous models were around for almost 7 years, so these monitors will be here for the long haul.

It's surprising how little you throw away when you compost and recycle.

I can live with deadly Dell monitor. :p

LOL! Ken Rockwell. I used to visit his site a lot. Until I saw all the inconsistencies. One month he loves something, the next it's all crap and you're better off buying a 1983 $50 rangefinder and having all your slides scanned

He's just a parody of himself now. He's writes for hits. It's a joke.

Gruber reminds me of a hipster. But no reason to think that his info about the ACDs is wrong. I think.

Yay, more Mac whiners!

Why do people freak out about the lack of matte options? I mean, I get it that you like matte for whatever reasons but unlike the laptops, guess what? If you're in the market for a monitor it's not like you're forced to buy an Apple screen.

I love glossy and I love the glass in particular so I love these monitors. If they were matte then *I* would look elsewhere. Big deal.

I'm actually thrilled about this primarily because of the price drop for the 24" model. If the price comes down the same percentage at B&H, it's finally in my price range and if they're phasing this model out in favor of a 24" 16:9 monitor, I REALLY want to scoop up the current model.

I was looking forward to a 36" or 40" display with something like 3840x2400. Why would I want to go to a smaller display?

I guess I could live with a 27" display if it had 325 pixels/inch like the iPhone4 though.

I've decided to keep the 24" Cinema Display I bought last week, and get $100 refunded due to the price reduction. To get the new one would cost $200 more, plus another $100 for Applecare and the 10% discount I got on the 24" (for compensation for troubles with other Apple gear) wouldn't apply. So... to get the new one would end up costing me an extra $375+.

In any case, I prefer the 24" screen format as it duplicates exactly the ratio of my MBP. And the resolution is ideal for my eyes. For once, an "upgrade" to a new model is of no interest.

I wouldn't but I just don't see Apple discontinuing the 24" anytime soon. Even if there was a 21.5" ACD down the pipeline. I know Apple is a company that likes to consolidate, and use the same part in multiple products, but that 24" ACD is a great monitor at a great price for lots of headless Mac/dual screen users.

Maybe in another two years or so, but not next week.

All very reasonable and valid points. It's a tough decision between an 24" with a decent resolution and a new 27" that is bigger but has too high a resolution. I wish they'd have just updated the 30" ACD. That has a resolution in between the 24" and 27".
