Just got finished speaking with a "supervisor" and after a good ten minute conversation, I now have a cancelled order for an iPod 😡
After trying everything I could think of to get my accessories (noting that the picture of the G4 iPod on the specs page contained a link that took you to a picture of a G4 iPod on the store), I ultimately decided to cancel my order and wait for the 60GB model (which hopefully will be including these accessories 🙄 ). In any case, good luck to the others. In the meantime, I may be waiting for the G3 iPods to come down in price, or wait for the G4 60GB models to eventually come out. Good luck to the others.

did you get on the phone acting like an ass? i just called and was very polite and got my order updated with the remote/carrying case at no additional charge.

What they left out...

People are complaining about the items that are not included with the new iPods, and if you were going to use those items I understand why you might be pissed. But if Apple's market research reflects what I see around me, I can understand why they made the decision to leave out the remote and the case.

1) I love my remote, but of the people I see on the streets or subway of D.C. every day using an iPod (generally 5 to 10 people), I've only ever seen one other person using it. I'm guessing that the overwhelming majority of users never bother with it, either because they find it a pain to clip to their clothes or because they hate the long cable.

2) As for the case, the Apple case was a piece of junk. Of the five iPod users in my office, every one has purchased an aftermarket case.

As for the dock not being included with the 20G model, the docks won't work with most aftermarket cases -- I haven't used mine since the first week I had it. Instead, I just use the cable directly. The only real reason to use the dock is for the line-out, and I've just never needed it.

Great packaging design

You mean the cardboard box the iPod comes in comes with a bag? The 40 GB iPods I've seen at retail stores looked to come in the same box the 15 and 20s came with.

No. The 3G 40GB iPods came with a carrying case. That carrying case was packed inside the box in its own little black cloth/nylon/tyvek..whatever..bag. It wasn't simply put in a regular plastic bag. In fact, none of the components are in "regular" plastic bags. It is very elegant packaging.

Old iPods:

20GB w headphones, dock, remote, and case = $399
40GB w headphones, dock, remote, and case = $499

New iPods:

20GB w headphones = $299 + dock ($39) + case ($39) + remote ($39) = $416
40GB w headphones, dock = $399 + case ($39) + remote ($39) = $477

When you look at it this way, these new iPods are unimpressive. The new 20GB actually costs more than the old one (if you get all the accessories), and the 40GB is just slightly cheaper. This is dissapointing - when I heard that the prices had dropped by $100, I thought "lower prices! Apple is doing something right for a change!". I'm surprised they would accomplish lower prices by removing stuff they previously bundled - seems like a very non-Appleish thing to do. 😡

So, I'll keep my 2G 10GB until a ~10GB iPod mini is released.

Absolut valid points. But you should see it this way: the entry price for an iPod is now lower. You can choose these accessoires or not.

I happily ordered the 20 gig version and nothing else and get this now for 300 Euro.

Cheers

In another note, Playboy's Miss August is wearing nothing but an iPod mini.... just an interesting observation, I guess the iPod really is making it as a cultural statement, its even making it into porn.

(Either that or Apple gave them some nice cash)

Doubt it, Apple's computers have always been 'sexy' for probably 10 years. Watch any movie until Dell or Gateway started paying for it recently. Apple never paid that I know of, movie types just thought they looked cool.

Oh yeah, and to me Playboy <> porn, it's art. 😉

It really adds to the excitement of getting something new. The Aiport Express, the iPod and iPod mini all come in such cool 'fold out' packaging. They really do put a lot of thought into it.

yeah and if you're like me and had a 2G laptop for some time the thought of plugging/unplugging a cable isn't that shocking.

Though I got the 40GB with the dock 🙂

Shipping

For those of you who have ordered from the apple site before, how long does it usually take to recieve an item?

I ordered the 20 gb just now and it said will ship on or before the 22nd, and it should take 5 business days or less. Any chance I'll get it this week?

Recent experience:

I ordered an iPod Mini and Airport Express on two different orders. Both had ground shipping.

When I finally got ship notification they came from Asia (One from China, one from Taiwan) and both were here in three days (North Carolina).

Both of them 'missed cutoff' first day but took one day to get to US, then one day to get to NC and on the truck via FedEx.

Apple Instant Loan...

Hi Guys,

I've been very puzzled that I haven't been able to use my Apple Loan Account Online to place an order for a new iPod.

Usually below the shipping info, there is a little block so you can enter all your loan info and have the order be credited to that account...

But it's not showing up on the "Place your Order" page.

However before you check out it still says "Find out how to get your order for $9 a month"...

Any body else having this Problem?

I'm gunna buy meself a 40gb, and a 200 dollar iTunes gift certificate, and give my iPod mini to my 25yo brother, he's been eyeing it for a while. and I said "When Apple comes out with newer larger iPods and reduces the Prices you can have my mini"

That quick huh? Thats sweet. So three days from when they process this baby.

I have a 3G 10Gb iPod, and my wife just got a pink mini. I don't like the click wheel. There are times when it gets hit by mistake and changes songs or something. At least with the 3G, it was touch sensitive. Those buttons only worked with my fingers...nothing else. That was cool.

I'll probably end up waiting for the 5G. Mine is working well anyway.

Clickwheel backlit?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered already, but I didn't feel like reading through 250+ posts.

Does the new clickwheel have a backlight, at least on the four corners where the "buttons" (menu, play, etc.) are?

YES!

Sold my 3G this morning before i went to work, i come back and i can buy a new one straight away!

I just got back from the palo alto apple store, they don't have any in stock yet, but i am no.1 in the list for reserving a 40gb iPod. Has anyone else found a retailer that has them in stock yet, i doubt it, but there is always a chance. Hopefully they will call/email me later today to say they are in. Please please please!!! 😱

I'm not getting something...the picture of the new iPod at the Apple site...the cord plugged into the top doesn't jibe with the standard headphone cord. I checked out the Quicktime VR and the plug is the same as the 3G.

Is there a different set of supplied cords? When did they start supplying the USB cord...and why?

I ordered from the apple store, but now I am having second thoughts and thinking maybe I should wait and get it from best buy with a replacement plan. Are these things sturdy? My only worry is that I will drop it and break it one day.

Anybody help me with this one?

This update is cool, needless to say, but I just got my old school (now old school) iPod last week, with the cram and jam rebate, and this really isn't such an incentive to update yet at all. I mean, for what I've got now, for the price I paid, I'm totally happy. The main selling point of the new iPod seems to be one click shuffle? I mean, I can shuffle too, with like two clicks. Oooo. And the new battery life is def. awesome, but for what I do (walking around campus, at work, etc.) 8 or so hours is plenty for me, so I'll stick with what I've got, and hopefully I'll be admired as an experienced non-materialistic "i'm fine with an older piece of hardware as long as it serves me well" sort of user. A vet, of sorts. I'm only 17, so the cash isn't exactly rolling in, in fact it rolls out far more often. So whatev. I'm tired of hearing about my crap going out of date.

My friends and I have all dropped our iPods at one point or another. I need not go into how many times i've "tossed" my ipod onto my bed and it glided right across and flew behind it or i threw it on a pile of clothes (in theory) and it ended up crashing onto the floor. Or the times it's been in the front pocket of my heavy loaded bookbag and i threw it on the floor without thinking, or my jacket for that matter. Still working!

My friend was listening to hers while in the kitchen and moved too fast without thinking and the thing flew right into a tub of soapy dishwater, totally submerged, when she pulled it out water was literally POURING out of the firewire port. It wouldn't turn on for a few days but then finally it did, and it's been working fine ever since.

So yes, iPods are indeed very sturdy, albeit, rather scratch prone 😛

And wait wait, while people are talking about iPods, let me ask this. So, alright. I have two computers, my old pc, and my new powerbook. I've got like 3,000 songs on the old PC, and I want to hook the iPod up to the PC, get the songs to the iPod (which I've done), and then plug into the powerbook, and put the songs on the iPod on the powerbook. This doesn't work, though, because when I plug into the powerbook, the songs all come up in iTunes but they're greyed over and locked.

Can anyone help me out with this?
