Out of those that dislike Apple's carry case for the ipod, anyone care to suggest what they use instead?

I am using a kinda rubber skin on my 2g ipod, i think its an iskin, it protects the case if you drop it then it'll bounce not break and stops scratches as well. I'l need to get a new one for my new 4g.

Personally, I'm not going to rush out and buy a new Ipod...considering the fact that I just bought an Iskin Exo case for my 15Gb Pod to go along with my new Griffin Italk voice recorder which I plan to use to record lectures in college. 🙂 My other Iskin case (Exo2) wouldn't allow me to use the Italk without removing the Ipod from the case first. 🙁

I do like that Apple has increased battery life though and that the 20Gb Ipod is now selling for $299. It should give manufactuers like Creative and iRiver some good competition.

Free Stuff

I just wanted to confirm with everyone about the not included accessories. When I ordered my new 40g iPod this morning (around 9:00 am EST) the tech specs page listed the remote and case. I later called (about 11:30 am EST) and spoke with a very friendly rep who looked at the specs page, acknowledged that I wasn't seeing things and forwarded me to the sales department. There I spoke with another kind person who also looked at the page for the first time and was surprised to see the listing. He went to check with his supervisor and came back in .5 seconds and said he just got an email from his superiors saying that they realized their mistake and go ahead and ship the remote and the case to anyone who ordered one before they changed the specs page. So now they are on their way. So if you ordered before 12:00 pm EST then you should be able to get both items shipped to you for free.

Enjoy,

Bry

Its not an error. They decided not to put them in, so they are compenating for it with people who bought them already. Why would they give them 2 if it was just an error on the tech specs page?

If anybody wants a remote and a carrying case, mine are gathering dust in a drawer...
If you carry it in a pocket it's way too thick, I just protect my iPod with a small bag made of soft cloth, and carrying it at your belt... well you could as well start wearing shorts or carrying a Dell laptop.
As for the remote, one of the key points of the iPod is its small size, adding the remote doesn't make it smaller and adds more cables you have to untangle. And what's the point in being able to go the next (or previous) song, if you have to do this, the CD/playlist is not worth listening in the first place, and the start/pause button if I just want to pause for a short moment, I just remove the earplugs, and if I have to pause for somewhat longer (as when arriving at work) I have to stow away the iPod anyway.

No this is not correct. I bought my wife's iBook at a Apple Retail store using the Ed discount. It might even be easier in person. All they needed to see was a student ID.

pfft! Wish I had been told that when ordering my PB so I didn't have to pull out my hair. Oh well, live and learn.

Mine came with a small black bag made of a thin cloth, with a cord to close it at the top (maybe that was just a part of the packaging material, though). But I lost that (forgot it in a train), so I got piece of nice soft black cloth and made myself a new one.

The grey cloth bag that the iPod came in 🙂 Mine doesn't often get knocked and the bag keeps it safe from scratches in my pocket from keys, change, phone etc.

As for me (as a MiniDisc owner): I use my remote all the time, never use the control buttons on the portable itself. OK, the iPod remote lacks an LCD display, that's a real shame. But being able to pause/stop the music without having to take the player out of e.g. a rugsack is a major plus. Moreover, I frequently change volume, depending on surroundings etc.

As other users, I'm disappointed that Apple pulled such a marketing trick.

My guess:

the clickwheel is exactly the same they use in the Minis ! Would make perfectly sense because they can buy it in larger qtys. That makes them cheaper. Therefore I believe that they are silver - from the silver mini !

Let's do some math, shall we?

Ok guys, let's do some math... I bought a 3G 20GB iPod last February. I paid a sh*tload of cash as I don't live in the US, but I still got all those great accessories. Now let's make some comparising between the 3G and 4G offerings (Maybe someone has done this already, but I didn't bother to read the whole 10 pages of this thread. If someone did it, I'm sorry... 😛):

THIRD generation iPods

20GB - $399 - iPod, dock, carrying case, remote
40GB - $499 - iPod, dock, carrying case, remote

FOURTH generation iPods

20GB - $299 - iPod
40GB - $399 - iPod, dock

In order to get the same features (except the clickwheel, the software, etc), one has to acquire the following products:

20GB iPod + dock + carrying case + remote
$299 + $39 + $39 + $39 = $416
40GB iPod + carrying case + remote
$399 + $39 + $39 = $477

And now, the final comparison:
20GB
$416 (4G) - $399 (3G) = $17
That's it, it will cost you seventeen bucks more... 😡
40GB
$477 (4G) - $499 (3G) = $-22
$22 cheaper, now that's a sweet deal... Apart from the fact you'll have to wait for the separate accessories to ship/be available at retail stores... And having all those boxes to tear open 🙄

So, my stupid, nonsense (but ethically correct) advice is: for crying out loud, BOYCOTT THE 20 GIGGER!!

And don't come with that "low-end model" talk. Apple shouldn't be doing this! I WOULD have got a 10GB or 15GB if it wasn't for the fact that it came with NO ACCESSORIES! Apple eventually "FORCED ME to force myself" to get a 20GB, after I did this very same math. Anyway, I only have 12,7GB free disk space now (and my iTunes library has just started growing exponentially), so I'm quite happy (and proud) with my 20GB. I keep joking with the fact that my iPod has twice the disk space of my old PC, (and 1/4 of the one of my iMac, that's preety impressive too 😉)
Heck, even MD Walkmans come ALL with remotes! are you listening, Steve...? Sometimes, people don't give a damn about ATRAC and AAC. Some people just DON'T care... And there will always be people that compare features and accessories, not style or music stores... Anyway, did they remove the remote because people like to show off their iPods to everyone else? iPods are already UBIQUITOUS, so what's the point, anyway? The remote IS useful (apart from the "endless cord", I have to put it around my neck and tuck the other end in my pocket, and it STILL looks oddly long 😀 but it's useful, I can guarantee you that... specially if you're taking some drawing lesson and don't want to touch your sacred iPod's surface with your dirty fingers 😛)
And the same goes for the carrying case. I read in the article from Newsweek that people usually prefer the original Apple accessories (yes, that plain black carrying case is just plain... beautiful!)... And Apple (dUH) must have already figured that... So, they thought, let's just MILK THE COW, and preferrably, the HARD way. Think of that poor guy that bought his iPod, took it home, opened the box, just to find out that the only objects included were: an iPod, a charger and a pair of cords, a small adapter ("what's this thing for, anyway" he may ask, if he hasn't seen a FW800 port ever before) , a pair of earbud phones, and... a cheap looking small bag. He'd probably be disappointed, and he would eventually end up buying the remote and the dock if he really wanted them, and buying a 3rd party or Apple carrying case... So, there you have it... my €0,02...

Lucky for you Bry.

When I ordered on the Australian page, they had never listed the remote and carry case - which for a while I had thought to be a mistake. I saw the US tech specs before I ordered, which was pretty much immendiately. I didn't see that the Australian specs were any different until a little later - had no reason to suspect otherwise.

Anyway, so I have to brave my luck with good old Apple Australia... who may not be as forgiving...

You guys didn't have long to order them today? they came online just before 9:00 am here in the US.

Not sure what time they came up here, I only got back from work.

As yet, Apple UK are still listing with remote and case!

I'm hoping to call first thing when the Apple line is open in the morning, maybe if i'm really lucky they'll help me out.

While it might be nice to have the dock included, I find that it isn't really essential. I bought an aftermarket case (from incase) for the 40gig 3rd gen I have and it has an opening at the bottom to plug the firewire cord into, but the iPod won't fit the dock with the case on. Many times I'm too lazy to remove the iPod from the case just to sit it in the dock, so I don't find the dock such an essential item.

Yeah same here, when I bought my 15Gb 3G Ipod I also bought the optional Dock, but found out that I can't use it with my Iskin case installed on the Ipod, however I can still sync and charge using the firewire/dock connector cable that came with my Ipod...so I'll probably just sell the dock on Ebay or something.

Finally figured it out

It Appears that you cant use the Apple loan account to purchase iTunes Gift Cert.

Bummer....

But w/e i went ahead and ordered my 40gb 4g iPod! It'lll be here between Tomorrow-Thursday (got next day shipping)

Where are these things being shipped from, Taiwan?

Time to pass on the mini, to my Brother, and i'll have the big iPod. (if u can really call it big...

Anyways I'll be a happy camper, and I'll get my new iPod in my hands Soon!

Possible explanation for lack of high end 60 gb iPod. Maybe Apple is trying to expand the line of iPods somewhat (the minis were a huge success) to capitalize on their popularity. A pro iPod with bluetooth, higher quality screen (maybe color), 60 gb hard-drive, new battery and an aluminum enclosure. This way Apple brings back the color coding of multi colored for low end, white for mid level and aluminum for high end. Other features that have been a concern to pro users like video out could also be addressed.

You can use your loan (just make sure to bring a picture ID), but AFAIK, you can only get the ed discount online (unless their policies have changed since the beginning of last semester).

That is only on software. You can buy hardware at EDU prices in the store. It's been like that since the Apple Store opened here awhile back.

If the 60GB HDD's aren't going into iPods, maybe they're stocking up for the next Powerbook update.

There ARE rumors that the next Powerbooks will be ultrathin (thinner than they are now).

Maybe they're using smaller form-factor hard drives to allow more space for everything else.

I really doubt that Apple will use 1.8" HDDs in their new iMacs. I mean, come on, they're desktops, and 2.5" drives aren't that much bigger, are much cheaper, and have larger maximum capacity.

how fast is the disk?

hi, does anybody know, how fast the data transfer or the diskspeed on the new iPods are? i'd like to use a 40GB as a portable hard disk.

thanks, andy

where the 60GB HDs are going

The reason why there is no 60 GB is that Apple will be using it for a new camcorder that utilizes the HD. you'll be able to capture at least 4+ hours of DV quality video on the HD.

Sounds good to me 😎

40 gb ipod

I'm very satisfied with this upgrade, I have been living (happily) with a 1G iPod for some years, Now I'm giving it to my son, knowing that this will be much better. Besides,I always wanted a line-out to fit it into my car stereo.

I believe you can get bigger, external HDDs for far less than an ipod

The world is their own DJ these days. Other than news in a blackout, I don't see any reason to turn on the radio.
TV...!! Now your on to something! How great would it be to chatch that big game on your ipod!

NPR is why I would want a tuner. I don't care THAT much because I'll still just listen to the radio in my car.

Sure, NPR releases a lot of stuff on the internet, but it's a hassle and sometimes up to 2 weeks late.
