Excellent product line. Apple doesn't give a rat's cent about power users anymore, because these were must-haves for a long time, and I think they still are.

Well, I updated last night and for some reason the reboot of the Time Capsule didn't work and it gave me an update failed message. I pulled the power cord and rebooted it that way and all is well.

Also disappointed it's been discontinued. I like not having to think about backups. So annoying.

I don’t get it. Apple rants about privacy and cedes the network backbone to Amazon and Google.

All the data is encrypted.

If Amazon, Google tried doing so, it would destroy paying customers confidence in both services and a huge breach of trust.

I haven’t logged into my AirPort Extreme control panel through airport utility on my Mac in a long time and I seem to have forgotten the password to access the router’s admin panel, how should I go about applying this new firmware update without the AirPort Extreme admin pass?

Hard reset:

Its NAT and LAN to LAN are fine ( And i vaguely remember they don't all work at top speed when you stress test them in all ports, but that is such a rare occasion that should not be a issue ) , but its WAN was kept at 300Mbps or 400Mbps if I remember correctly.

I get 480 all day

That is not correct. My 802.11ac AirPort Extreme easily handles 900+ Mbps through the WAN.

If you're talking PPPoE then it will be significantly slower than that, but not as slow as 400 Mbps.

They're all in different rooms, with the two 4th gen Extremes acting as switches only, with their Wi-Fi APs disabled. Hard wired using CAT6 because I think it offers a more robust connection between each device. It's a setup that works well for my small home network.
Umm....I connect all the iMacs and Synology NASs via the ethernet(CAT6ASpec) RJ45 port. Only use wireless for iPhones and Airs. Otherwise similar setup.

I seriously wish they get back into the routers business. I’d buy it in a heartbeat!

If I could buy the 6-year version new today, I would. I'm going to hold on to the one I already own until it dies. I've tried other new mesh routers, and they're all slower. The mesh stuff increases coverage in large multi room homes (at the cost of speed) but it's mostly marketing. Unlike the current state of affairs, this thing doesn't suffer from poor thermals or anything else. It's an absolute sleeper, and it's built to last.

Just bought another AirPort Extreme off EBay about two weeks ago and will deploy for a family member tomorrow to replace an Airport Express.

I love the service and the simplicity and the reliability!

Might be encrypted but still can track where that data goes, how much, etc.

What exact hardware did you purchase? I see the ports are USB 3.0 so are your backups faster?

Leon McKee
Synology RT2600 router and MR2200 extender.

I can't say if the backups are any faster because I'm still using the Time capsule, albeit via a faster ac network.

The TC is plugged in via Ethernet. When I get a new NAS, I'll be using Ethernet, so the USB 3 won't make a difference.

I suppose the USB 3 would be faster than the TC's USB 2, but I've only used it for a printer

Not any different actually. We still get paid like any other developer.
On that note, are these security vulnerabilities also going to be addressed on the Airport Express @Beefie ?
Your comment would be very much appreciated if you are indeed an Apple dev working on Airport firmware. :)

WOW!. When did that happen? Thank You. Did newer generation had better WAN? ( There was only one 802.11ac Generation right ? )

It was the reason I had to switch away from AirPort Extreme because it couldn't run 1Gbps.

Edit: A quick search on the Internet shows I am not the only one having this problem, are you running your AEX as Bridge mode?

Was unable to get the update flag to appear using Mac Airport Utility but did using iPhone app.

Note, my Mac utility was beyond the minimum version required according to Apple's tech note.

And? Such telemetry data collection is not an issue. Many companies keep track of customer statistics of their online customers for BI purposes.

Data usage can be part of billing and providing google / AWS customers a telemetry reporting service.

Your ISP, cell provider logs what sites you are visiting ( and probably required by law, even in the us), your data usage etc.

My cable modem is bridged but the main AirPort Extreme is not bridged and is functioning as the router for the entire network. Connection is wired Ethernet.

And no, this is not new. People with speed problems may have one of these issues:

1. Running PPPoE.
2. Client computer too slow.
3. Running WiFi only.
4. Running software that slows down speed. eg. Anti-virus.
Etc.

Anyone know of any other company that discontinues a product and then releases a firmware or software update for that product 6 months or more later? Hats off to Apple! Many thanks!
Seriously! I have had mine for years and years now, and it just soldiers on even as I add more devices to my household. Unless it dies or my needs somehow outgrow it, I could see using it for several years more.

Great! I’m glad I decided to get some more of these 802.11ac AirPort Extremes off eBay for relatively cheap to fill out my home network. I guess this does serve as a reminder though to replace my previous generation 802.11n model.

Nice. Are those base stations all connected by Ethernet?

Yes. All connected by Ethernet.

I believe if it’s WiFi connection, it’s a dotted line. For Ethernet it’s a solid line in the map.
