This might explain my issues on my school's wifi (Sometimes won't grab a ip after switching locations on the same network).

I've blamed the school but it could be the computers fault.

Yeah. If you have one of the more recent Mac laptops, get one of the Airport Extreme updates, but at your own risk of course. If you read my previous posts you'll see that I finally got it working, with a lot of difficulty.

airport connection super slow after update

right after running the update my airport is constantly scanning for network even when it's successfully locked onto my home network (generated by airport express)

Cannot really say I'm happy, as usual Apple is increasingly worse at doing computers, and more interested in bloody iphones (I got a 3G one and it's even worse bug-wise by the way)

golden rule with Apple: run an update ONLY and i underline twice ONLY if you have a problem you couldn't solve with a clean re-install.

I know it's sad, but these days with Apple all you u can really do is to wipe your system completely and pray.

Apple has released Airport Extreme Update 2008-004 via Software Update.

The update appears to be Apple's replacement for the recently pulled Airport Extreme 2008-003 update.

A little overdramatic are we?

airport

We have a small rock and roll band.We travel with three macbooks and one windows laptop. Two of the macs are about a year old (they are mac -2,1). Mine is a few months old (mac 4,1). The windows and the two older macbooks never have problems connecting to any wireless networks anywhere ( We stay in two hundred motels a year). But my newer Macbook almost always has lower signal bars and is consistently being kicked off and then won't reconnect again ever! Many times it asks for passwords for networks that don't require one. Even this post is being sent from the older Macbbook because mine won't
reconnect after being kicked off. As soon as I can get connected again I'll try this new update. In the meantime it's been a real drag on both time and productivity. It's cost me money.

yeah, i have been having a hard time connecting to wifi networks, it took a long time for the MBP to scan and then id available networks. also did disconnect a bunch.

hoping this solves it.

There is allot of truth in what he says. if it isnt broken dont fix it.

i cant however say the same for a OS update (like going from 10.5.0 to 10.5.1) cause there is still issues in Leopard that need fixed, i jump on those updates. The same for the security updates

now for driver updates, like a Airport update or other same like update, i take a wait and see before i download and install.

HURRAY!!!!!!!! I cant dl anything bigger than a few MBs. I love this update. Does anyone know if apple has pulled this one as well? I cant find it on apple.com at all. I cant install older versions either. I hope they send a fix really soon. This really sucks.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

No, it is available only from software update.
If you want to revert, you need to restore IO80211Family.kext and IONetworkingFamily.kext, you can get from a Time Machine backup or just pull them off 5.5 combo update with Pacifist.

I can't argue with that--I don't like to mess with stuff that works and my airport works fine--so I'm not in a real rush to run the update. Kind of like the digital camera RAW compatibility that shows up every time I check updates--I don't ever use a digital camera.

problem

I have a problem, i cannot turn on wi-fi, i try restart so many times, i try delet and create services :( i m sad.. somebody help me, or have some trouble ??

Hey guys,

To those people who have problem with the update, over on xlr8yourmac they have some reports of RealPlayer being the problem there. May be you guys can take a look at that.

A reader named David posted this:

Real Player [affecting] WiFi
I, too, had this problem. My wife's MacBook began having issues connecting for any lengthy period to my TimeCapsule. Backups were nearly impossible.
We sent the unit away for repair, to no avail. It wasn't until a AppleCare tech had me remove some of the system plugins that I saw the Real Player issue solved. I scoured the net and found no one else with a similar issue, so I chalked it up to bad luck. I see now, that wasn't the case.

I got a Mac Pro with no air port, but still had to install it, and needed a reboot.
Sigh, .. another 150 days uptime gone. lol

Oh well :) As long as I am rebooting for a reason (eh..) and not because of a BSOD, I am quite happy to have control over the reboot and actually do it.

Thanks apple for keeping things up to date.

I have the identical problem. It started after I installed the latest update (airport). Have you been able to resolve it? I tried several reboot, a "shift/control/option/power" reset.... nothing.....

And I am in the middle of a business trip to Japan.... really bad timing....

Anyone has any idea?
Thanks

Airport stays OFF after update

I finally fixed it on my Macbook Air:
Problem: after the latest update (airport related), my airport stays off. When I clicked on "Turn Airport ON", nothing happened, multiple reboot and PMU resets did not change anything.
Solution: In the preference/Sharing. I had turned the Internet sharing ON (USB/LAN internet) using Airport. This setting was still ON as expected. After many other things, I finally turned the Internet Sharing OFF (remove the tick-mark) then shut down the whole system with "shift/Control/Option/Power"
When I reboot, the airport was ON and scanning. I can now turn it off and on, it works correctly. I re-establish the Internet Sharing and.... voila!!!! everything is working again.... I hope the same applies for you.
Best,

Someone PLEASE help me! :(

I updated tonight and I get frequent drop outs, and reconnections, it's really pissing me off.

I should've learned my lesson after my AEBS got usless when I upgraded to 7.3.2.

Any suggestions? Any way to downgrade to the older one? :(

Now it's dropping every few minutes. *cry*

WHY oh WHY did I update my firmware...anyone, please, I beg of you, help me...

Sadly, the only way I know to improve your wireless connection is to run Windows natively on the computer (assuming it's got an Intel processor).

I do wish Apple's recent updates (as in since they've moved to Intel computers) were a bit more reliable and less problematic.

I cannot remember many (if any) times that Apple had to re-issue updates for the PowerPC machines. I think they might have, but it definitely wasn't as many times as they've had to do it for Intel machines (even pre-dating Leopard).

What do you mean run Windows natively?

I have it installed in Boot Camp, not sure what it could change. :(

I just switched routers, maybe the other one didn't like my Mac after the update, we'll see how it goes.

I mean that I always get stronger wireless reception when running Windows. Bootcamp would be running Windows "natively".

Windows always seems to be able to see networks that OS X cannot.

After the latest Airport update I found that I had a problem with two of my email accounts in Mail (both using same server) and also that I could not connect to that server in webmail. After much tinkering and frustration it turned out that because my setup includes the Airport Extreme in a bedroom and also an Airport Express in the living room (installed fairly recently for extending the network and wireless connectivity), that I needed to go in and update the Airport Express, too, even though the Airport Extreme had been done automatically by Software Update. Once I did that -- bingo! I was again able to connect to the webmail server again and also in Mail to get my two problem email accounts to send and receive correctly again. It was odd that it affected just that one server and two of my email accounts, and that it didn't affect my internet connectivity or other usage at all. The way I finally pinpointed the problem was when I used my MacBook Air in the bedroom (no problems) and then brought it out to the living room and suddenly the problems showed up. Made it clear that it was the Airport Express that was the bottleneck and the issue....

Just thought I'd mention this in case it may help someone else. If you have both an Airport Extreme AND an Airport Express be sure that both are updated!

The 2008-003 update blocked out my AirPort on both ethernet and wireless unless I turned off the OS X firewall. How that ever made it out the door is beyond me....pity testing on Apple's behalf.

Good news is the 2008-004 update has fixed it all, and everything is in working order again.

I never installed 2008-003, but 2008-004 killed my wifi unless I turned off the firewall.
