Has anyone confirmed if this one needs a restart after installing? RSR updates shouldn't, but the (a) update a few weeks ago seemed to, albeit a normal restart rather than an install-y one (technical term).

All I care about is that the CRAZY keyboard lag since even iOS 15, seems to be gone in these last 2 betas. But it was like this previously too and in future betas returned to the same laggy piece of trash. The keyboard “character previews” or whatever are like lightning now, no lag and it can totally keep up with the pace of my typing and I am back to being at LEAST 3x faster.

You'll need to be more specific. Running iOS 16.1 on an iPhone 13 Pro has zero lag. Is your device older? Remember that your personal experience may not reflect the larger user base. It could be due to the combination of apps that you have installed on your device.

Since I’ve made that post last night, it’s back to being laggy and screwed up. It’s been this way on a 2nd gen SE, an 11, and a mini. I’ve had to edit and correct several work documents and practically every forum post I make anywhere.

Makes no sense. Earlier I typed something like “peach” and it autocorrected it into dodecahedron, completely nonsensical and it does this continuously. If I install SwiftKey or Grammarly or other third party keyboards the lag between keys is not there. I just typed “keys” in the last sentence and it turned it into “Meg’s.” I’m ready to switch to Android if this doesn’t go away, it’s so bad I can’t handle it. I’ve tried resetting the keyboard, removing text shortcuts, restarting my device…nothing seems to be working. But just last night it was completely fine.

And to sound really extra crazy - I swear it does this less if the phone is placed into dark mode. The keys usually seem much more responsive if the keyboard is dark, LOL I know how dumb that sounds, but it’s been my experience. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good to know : These have less restrictions than regular iOS updates.

I had 19% battery left, unplugged, and it did proceed and installed correctly.

Usually you need 50% and/or plugged.

Wasn't the whole point of the rapid response security updates to do small security patches fast without requiring a reboot, similar to what they have on linux for kernel patching? Why does it require a reboot?

Would these ever come out to regular users? I know for the regular security updates they can take a while and I wonder if it's worth updating. I would love to see Apple come up with a way to update the watch without having to take it off. I would think the Watch would be ripe to have some of these kind of updates.

Yes, that's entirely the plan and indeed the whole point. More regular and less pain-in-the-bum security updates for all.
