Guys, I posted on page 2 about free aperture. Aparently I'm not the only one who got it for free. 9to5mac also reported it: https://twitter.com/#!/9to5mac/status/91320233712824321

It only became free for about 30 minutes or an hour I guess. I'm riddled with guilt. I feel like pirating, but I really was looking at the app store and happen to stumble upon that.

I'm also wondering if I should keep my iPhoto library or just move everything to aperture? They can both read one another's library can't they?

Bad news for full screen mode (and Lion).

Because it uses Lion's Full Screen Mode rather than the application's (as it used to):

1. Going into and out of full screen mode takes a lot more time because of the animations. (I haven't been able to figure out how to do everything in full screen mode so need to switch frequently.) I don't think there is any way to disable the animations.

2. If you want to use a second monitor for something other than Aperture, you can no longer use full screen mode.

3. Secondary viewer selection (what Aperture displays on a second monitor) seems to be somewhat broken -- it's often greyed out or doesn't work even when enabled.

4. Only good news is that Lion's full screen mode automatically creates a new space to put the app in.

Well, I downloaded v 3.1.3 via the 'app' store and just opened it under the updated version.

The most immediate observation is the speed increase opening and scrolling through my massive photo collection. The previous version lagged and took time to load.

I'll continue working with it for other impressions...

Um, I didn't post a screenshot...

My bad. someone replied to your post asking for a screenshot but it was someone else who posted it

By "proper" I meant in the context of Lion. Previously, in both Lion and SL fullscreen would cover your current desktop. Y'know, now Lion has this spiffy thing with fullscreen apps that make their own Space using a systemwide API. It does that now. Yay. Make sense?

Ah, right, I see. Yes, fullscreen in Aperture (in SL) is a bit annoying.

Are you sure? I was suspecting it depended where you purchased it. i.e. only those products bought and downloaded through the on line App store would be updated that way. I hope I am wrong.

No, you're not wrong. Lion's Software Update and the Mac App Store Updates are still two separate things.

if you didn't write 'weighs in' and just wrote 'is' it would be more accurate. As George Orwell pointed out, metaphors must draw out a picture in the readers mind. If this is not the author's intention the metaphor is simply a cliche and should be avoided.

that is pretty nice. wish i had seen that.

Seriously? That's bothered you?

Besides, 'weighs in' can be read a number of ways, and conveys the message just fine. Just writing 'is' would have been more inaccurate in light of the fact that this download has been of a different size for some users.

Metaphors may be cryptic as well as descriptive, and slang and re-appropriation of clichés can be served up knowingly and with deference without the grammar police citing the glories of dead authors what spoke proper english, like...

Grow up, and download your update already.

I got very bored of clicking and holding a effect adjuster for about 20secs for the effect to change. Since taking out my 5200rpm drive (where the app, library and external linked photos sat) and replacing with a SSD drive, with the photos (library and folders) on an external 7200 FW800 drive, it flys now!

4 things have made a world of difference for me since upgrading comps a week ago:
-Delete "rejected" photos. I had 30,000 photos chilling in my "rejected" smart album
-Split up libraries. I now have a "Vacations" "City" "Archives/Various" and a new album for every wedding couple.
-Moved libraries from FW800 external to a WD Black SATA drive
-Went from 2.4C2D to a 2.9i7, 6GB to 12GB, 256 gpu to 1gb gpu.

Still not as fast as it should be, but at least it functions now.

Is there any way to download the update without using the effing "App Store"? I really want to stay away from that, thank you.

When you say splitting up libraries, do you mean creating new libraries based on a subset of the main library? Only the final part (creating new albums, within a library) seems to contradict that and would make no difference that I can see. Creating separate, smaller libraries does make a difference, and makes archiving easier.

Daddy Warbucks

The only thing I can gather from all the posts is that if you have unlimited resources, can pop for 12G of Ram and a 27" 2011 iMac.....then life is sweet.

Some folks get all the bragging rights.

Ya, I know, it's just another data point.

Upgrading library to 3.1.3 is taking forever

I have a 1.7TB Aperture library running on a Mac Pro 5,1 with 8GB RAM. It's been running for fourteen hours now with the message "Upgrading Library: scanning library". There's no indication bar saying how far it's complete but only a swirling bar which presumably indicates it's doing something. Anyone got any ideas as to how long it takes to upgrade a library such as this? Restoring this file from a vault a few weeks ago took 24 hours - just be patient I guess.

I checked software updates. Nothing. Then per discussions here, checked the App store and there it was...that is annoying.

Zillions of people who have App3 will have no idea there is an update.

It is like when you go to an attraction and they route everyone thru the store coming and going so you might buy a t-shirt or coffee cup....

You didn't get a badge on your App Store icon in your dock?

Thought about "upgrading" my iPhoto to Aperture. I have an 'older' iMac. Maybe Fall 2008. I just upgraded to 4gb Ram, It is a 3.06 Ghz C2D (24" if that helps any)

Do you think it would be OK to get Aperture? Or should I opt for Lightroom or Neither and just stick with iPhoto and upgrade that?

I have about 30,000 photos in my library. iPhoto has been sluggish but I did just double my memory and haven't had much time to play with it since. I cannot afford to upgrade my iMac now…maybe in several more years, so that is not an option.

Currently I have my photos on the internal Mac HDD. I was thinking of switching to an external source if I went the Aperture way. I recently upgraded my camera and feel it is time to figure out a better cataloging method. And I have a real need to actually start deleting the not-so-great photos.

Thanks in advance.

My exact reason for moving from iPhoto to Aperture was my library and how bad iPhoto handled it. At the time I had around 33,000 photos and the latest upgrade to iPhoto '11 was a joke. The whole thing was slow and painful.

Once Aperture came out in the app store for $79 bucks I jumped. My exact same library on the same machine in Aperture compared to iPhoto was night and day. Aperture runs smoothly.

Just my 2 cents.

try the demo of both to see which you like

I got aperture for the good price in the app store, but it was very sluggish on my 2007 mac (yours will be better)

switched over to lightroom and no performance issues at all

That was quick. Thanks so much both of you.

Yes iPhoto is sluggish (at least was)
I suppose I can Demo and not totally switch out the library or lose anything in that process.

For $79 it seems like a "good deal"

Another thing to check up on if you want Aperture, check your graphics card that your mac has, Aperture relies heavily on a powerful graphics card

from what I remember if you install the demo, it creates a new trial library with your photos in, so nothing to lose in giving it a go
