This update is appearing for me on my Early 2013 RMBP. The official description lists this as an update only for 2012 RMBP and 2013 Air models (not RMBP). Did Apple even test SMC 1.2 with 2013 RMBP? Based on the release info, it sounds like this update was mis-flagged as being eligible for a system it was not intended for.

Seeing the apparently mismatched compatibility, and having now found multiple people claiming this update bricked their machines (or at least killed the battery), I'm definitely going to leave this update untouched for a while. Of course with Mavericks on its way, I'll be updating whatever is required for that upgrade...

I just got my 2013 air yesterday and when I was putting all my stuff back and updating there was 3 firmware updates. I hate firmware updates they scare the crap out of me since they can brick my machine. After the third one I was thinking holy crap there better not be any more. They were in fact different also not the same one coming back.

I had no issues installing thankfully. I only had the machine one day so I was thinking please god dont screw it up. I had so many issues with my previous machine I would have been heartbroken if I had to take it in.

Is there any way to install this update on Windows? I guess I'll just have to keep a USB install of OS X around for this type of stuff. Apple should truly support Windows some day.

What? You buy a MacBook Air to only run Windows? And then you ask Apple they will support MAC OSX updates through Bootcamp......you live on another planet my friend.

I get your urge to support the "Apple Team" at any cost - but seriously, this is a SMC update, not an MAC OS X update as you boldly state. If you understand computers - it is a firmware update. Firmware is at lower level than OSes - fixes at firmware level affect all OSes - Mac, Linux, Windows etc. Battery charging issues for example that were fixed few days ago.

So yeah Apple must have a way to install those that is not dependent on OS - my HP Workstation BIOS can connect to HP Servers and get the BIOS updates without any OS requirement for example. Apple's firmware already connects to Internet to download recoveries etc. so it's not far fetched.

Yes I understand that SMC update is a firmware update. But you understand that firmware updates are optimized for specific hardware. In this case its optimized for Apple hardware and on of top of that runs Mac OSX, they both work in harmony. Apple only support firmware updates through OSX which make sense. The idea is that every firmware update works seamless with ofcourse hardware and software on top, in this case OSX. Think of the current MacBook Airs that runs OSX , they have ridiculous battery life. You really think that Apple engineers think "oh yeah this SMC update must also work really good with BIOS/Windows" Not in a 1000 year Apple will release this firmware updates through Bootcamp, simply because Bootcamp is an second option for you Mac system and Apple will give no warranty.
