Apple today released updated 7.8 firmware for 2012 802.11n AirPort Express models, introducing support for AirPlay 2.

The new software can be downloaded onto compatible AirPort Express devices using the AirPort Utility app for iOS devices.

After downloading the firmware update, AirPort Express users have reported being able to target the AirPort Express right alongside other AirPlay 2 devices when running iOS 11.4.1 or iOS 12. With the AirPlay 2 update, 2012 AirPort Express models offer support for multi-room audio and are able to work with other AirPlay 2 devices such as the HomePod, the Apple TV, and Sonos speakers.

There has been speculation that the AirPort Express would be updated to include AirPlay 2 support after the accessory started showing up in the Home app as an AirPlay 2 accessory in the iOS 12 beta.

Apple in April announced that its entire AirPort wireless router lineup, AirPort Express included, had been discontinued. Apple sold the AirPort Express until available stock ran out, but it is no longer available for purchase at this time.

Because the AirPort Express was discontinued, it wasn't clear if it would indeed gain AirPlay 2 support because Apple's AirPort unit was disbanded, but Apple did indeed opt to introduce support for customers who are still using the AirPort Express units.

Apple plans to provide service and parts for current AirPort Base stations for the next five years.

I saw the google router the other day and thought to myself. Perhaps this might be a good reason apple might take another look at the router. https://store.google.com/product/google_wifi

I absolutely love my airport extreme and still is one of the best routers on the market IMO.

    Good job Apple!

Now just bring back the entire AirPort system redesigned to be a fully modern mesh network on 802.11ax and I'll be happy, lol.

Does the AirPort Extreme even have a headphone jack?

Haha, that’s funny. Do you see any audio out on the AC Airport?

I'm guessing this is only for the newest model?

I found one of these airport expresses at a thrift store for $13... I couldn’t resist. It was next to a 2009-era Time Capsule that was selling for $250.

Excuse my digression. Sonos was unable to get their top of the line PlayBar upgraded to Airplay2. Now we know, a marketing decision, as many of us thought.

Wow! That’s out of the blue and no doubt very welcomed by Airport owners. Wonder if it’ll come to old Time Capsules too?

It doesn’t. Airport Extremes and TCs don’t have any use for Airplay 2 functionality.

That was my first reaction as well. At least my airport express will become more useful!

Well done Apple - great long term support for this. You'll get rewarded with another purchase (if I can find one).

For any Apple dev staff on this - thank you, these forums show how much it means.

It really is. It’s not often a discontinued product is updated with a new feature.

I guess those who always complain about “Tim Cook’s Apple” only caring about profits have lost some more legitimacy.

Sweet! I wish they hadn't discontinued the Airport line... but I'll take what I can get! I love my Airports.
