I saw the google router the other day and thought to myself. Perhaps this might be a good reason apple might take another look at the router. https://store.google.com/product/google_wifi

I absolutely love my airport extreme and still is one of the best routers on the market IMO.

Google WiFi is so good, and the cheapest of the top 3 mesh routers.

And they update their WiFi app every other day.

I still use a time capsule, but plan on ditching for googles router option soon.

Only down side is it’s google lol

Excuse my digression. Sonos was unable to get their top of the line PlayBar upgraded to Airplay2. Now we know, a marketing decision, as many of us thought.
I think exactly the same... I own two Sonos play 1 and I've waited for airplay 2 upgrade. Marketing decision only, we are aware of this I think.

Now I hope Sonos could rethink about that

btw Best Buy still has refurbished ones for 75

Edit: Nope the refurbs are sold out. looks like they still have "new" ones in stock

I genuinely don't think it was a marketing decision.

The processing power on an APX is probably much higher than the processing power on a Play:1. All the Play:1 has to do is receive a WiFi signal and put the audio out through a speaker.

It doesn’t. Airport Extremes and TCs don’t have any use for Airplay 2 functionality.

Which begs the question in this wave of celebration: what does Airplay 2 do here on this particular device?

I know what Airplay 2 does in general, so read the question literally. What is it doing on THIS device that makes this such a great update?

Edit: never mind. The picture choice in post #1 threw me. AP Expresses ARE basically another audio device that could certainly benefit from AP2.
