So after reading the responses here and elsewhere about this developers beta version my only question would be is there anyone that is actually seeing 5 bars anymore. I have yet to see anyone say they are still getting five bars after an update like they were before; I understand people would rather complain than say if things are good but I'm just a bit curious to know if five bars is even possible anymore. Or could this be a reason AT&T has been handing out microcells for free? Hopefully I at least still get one bar at home because I can't get any from Verizon at my house.

any findings about performance enhancements with ios 4.1 beta running on iphone 3G?

with 4.0, my 3G is awfully sluggish.

I did a one off test a couple days ago on 3g with about 2 bars and now with beta update it took 3 attempts to get close to what my one off test gave me.... this is all without "death grip" which in itself is interesting

Bottom speed is under 4.o the rest are 4.1

That is hardly an accurate comparison. You can't compare a test from a few days ago and a few from today and conclude it has anything to do with the OS. The network conditions could be totally different. If you had done them right before and then right after upgrading that would be more reliable, but really they need to be done at the same time on two different devices.

Really? I have yet to see a single person either on these boards or on Apple's own boards that have said that replacing the iPhone 4 fixed the proximity sensor issues they were having. A handful wrote right after they returned from the Apple Store proclaiming that the problems were resolved, but inevitably they would be back in a day or two to say that the proximity sensor problems had returned. On Apple's boards, there are no fewer than 30 people who have said that they are on their fifth or sixth replacement iPhone 4 and that they continue to have the proximity sensor problem.

Count yourself among one of the (very few) lucky ones, I guess.

So millions of people have phones that work just fine while 30 folks get 5 or 6 bad ones in a row? WHAT ARE THE ODDS??

I'm not so sure the proximity sensor is hardware related. I had the problem with my 3G.

After doing a full software restore the problem was corrected.

The only thing that concerns me is whether or not it includes a fix for the proximity sensor (if in fact it is a software issue)

I don't make a single phone call without muting, speaker phoning, face timing the person on the other end.

Must be a troll or a complete moron! Just take the phone back and get a replacement. How hard is that?????? Idiots abound...

Works better for me!!!

I updated last night, and yes the bars will still drop to 1 (much slower than last time, and I have to hold in much harder and for a longer period of time).

The real test is a speed test - using Speedtest with the update and with the one bar after holding it for a while I was still able to get aboput 1.5 mbps download and 200 kbps up.

I'm fine with that!

This. Anyone?

Calling it 'sluggish' is being nice. I've had the phone kill the iPod app because it took too long to start...

Thanks in advance for the info.

Look at the top 2 lines in this screen capture. This is holding the iPhone. The 3rd line from the top is with it sitting on my desk.

This makes perfect sense to me, given the number of bars showing on your phone (1 bar). If you are in a weak signal area, the hand attenuation problem is definitely expected to affect voice/data in a negative way.

Now if your phone was showing 5 bars (which it may have before the update, due to the bad algorithm for showing bars), then it would have been perceived as something inexcusable because you would see the bars go from 5 to 1, along with the performance drop.

This is why Apple issued that initial press release. A drop in performance shouldn't happen when you're initially showing 4 or 5 bars. It's absolutely expected if you're only showing one.

Now I'm not completely excusing Apple though. First, they let a really poor algorithm get into their product. Second, there definitely seems to be a bit of a problem with the external antenna design. But then again, for anyone who happens to naturally hold the phone without touching the bottom left (like me), phone performance is actually better than previous iPhones by quite a large margin.

Sorry for a long post, but the length of my post reflects the larger problem that Apple has to deal with. There are multiple things going on here, and it's difficult for someone who isn't reading up on all of it to keep up with.

EDIT: Just realized you probably were holding the phone when you took the screenshot. So do you happen to remember how many bars it was showing when you weren't holding the phone?

3 bars on the desk

Do you think the White iPhone4 will ship with 4.1 on it or is that too early too expect it since the release of 4.0.1 was just last week?
