I wonder what happens to the font with long names. It's a BIG font.

Yeah, 'smatts' is my username, and the text size changes depending on the length.

It was never gone.

It was in the beta GM release but then removed when Apple released the "official" 4.0 release. Beta developers who kept the GM still have the "Game Center" on their iPhone (I did until I restored it with Apple's "official" release, but can still get it back by restoring the beta GM IPSW).

Game center in 4.0 was a developer preview, they might be getting ready to release the final with 4.1.

As it apparently has been revamped, it seems they may be releasing it (and good timing as a possible "distraction" from the signal issues plaguing the company).

Game Center continues to be in beta, and accessible to registered developers only.

I had it in the beta versions as well, and attempted to use it with other 4.0 beta users. The most you could do was add a friend, no games or score board. As a developer I won't be updating to 4.1, as, well, I'm interested in what the iPhone Dev Team releases  .

THERE IS NO SOFTWARE FIX COMING. THEY NEVER SAID THERE WOULD BE ONE.

I need a bigger font.

No, but a lot of people interpreted "For a while there, we've been pretending the signal was better than it really was, but now when you're at 5 bars and lose 30dB or so by holding the phone in its special place and discover you now have no 3G, that looks worse than it doing the same from 3 bars so from now on the bars will be more like a linear representation" as "we'll fix it, don't worry! NICE shiny thing. GOOD shiny thing. No need to send it back."

On 4th phone and still have proximity issues

I am now on my 4th iPhone4 replacement and have always had the proximity and signal problem on ALL of them

The 2nd also had a gap between the front glass and silver casing allowing you to swipe a credit card lol

The 3rd had a broken dock connector port too

The 4th just has these 2 issues :(

I am going to be returning, refunding and getting a simpler phone instead :(

I realise this. But it was never taken out of anything. It's been in dev builds since the beginning (GM and the 4.0 Public Release were identical except for GC) and excluded from public builds since the beginning.

How is this remotely relevant to this thread?

They ALL have the signal problem so there's absolutely no reason to point that out.

Not everyone is having an issue with the proximity sensor, yes there is a chance you have gotten 4 bad phones, but what's more likely is that the setting on the current proximity sensor is not sensitive enough so depending on the shape of your ears it works differently.

If you just make a call and set your phone down and then put your finger on the proximity sensor does the screen turn off?

I can't get rid of the smudges around my home button. No matter how I wipe there's always a ring of smudging around the home button.

Does this fix that?

Apologies not trying to troll the thread I posted in response to others mentioning a swap out would solve the proximity sensor problem.

When I set it down and put finger over it works, it even works when I immediately am talking but i notice it happening especially more often when on a longer phone call.

Firmware

Apple doesn't have a signal fix! All they are fixing are the size of the bars, and the way iOS shows the signal strength you have. The signal issue IS NOT in the iOS software, it is completely a HARDWARE issue.

You are correct about the hardware issue; however, I think the problem is firmware as well---I can still make calls when I have almost no visible bars without a problem, while my wife's 3G shows considerably more signal strength in the same room, both phones on the table unheld. I think the firmware fix will give people confidence with respect to an accurate signal strength and dampen the media frenzy regarding the antenna issue. Its all been a blessing for me especially coming from T-Mobile where my cell phone would not operate in my house.

The proximity sensor problem is bad hardware in some phones, bring it into the Apple Store and they will replace your phone.

Is there a range of serial numbers or production time that has been found more prone to antenna and proximity sensor issues, or is it the entire first lot of phones? I purchased my iPhone 4 at an AT&T store on June 29 after watching it come off the truck, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't one of the very first ones manufactured, and I've had it in a case since day one. I have not had any signal or proximity issues, but would still return the phone if it was part of a recall.

OMG!!! THIS UPDATE FIXED ALL PROBLEMS WITH IPHONE 4

lol jkes, they are hardware issues and CAN'T be fixed by software updates

All you idiots complaining about no fix for the "alleged" reception and sensor issues - THIS IS A DEVELOPER EDITION. It's meant for people like me who MAKE apps. Apple is probably working on other fixes with antenna engineers and such, and will release the bug fix in the next 4.0.x edition (as well as throw it into the next beta) once they HAVE the fix.

Also, the developer edition is BETA. IT WILL HAVE BUGS AND CALLING ISSUES YOU DUMBASSES.

Calm down and just go return it if you really don't want it. Another reason why there will be no "recall".

Agreed. You shouldn't be downloading a Beta if you aren't a developer and you don't need it for bug testing your app. Beta's break ****, thats why they are Beta's

People with 4.1 testing the death grip issue, please do 3G speed tests with and without the grip to see if there is an improvement. The display of bars does not necessarily mean anything.

I think a lot of people realize it's just cosmetic.

Also loosing bars isn't the issue here. So what if it shows less bars, its a cell phone it will do that. The issue is when you loose the bars in a 3 bar area do you go into 'No Service'. I think people are really loosing sight of this. If you can make phone calls and receive email while death gripping it, the bars mean nothing.

If apple were to revise the design, surly they could just prevent the problem by moving the black lines so they are either side of the dock connector, where hand barely touch when using it. Remember, they one on the right is just there for aesthetic reasons...

I did a one off test a couple days ago on 3g with about 2 bars and now with beta update it took 3 attempts to get close to what my one off test gave me.... this is all without "death grip" which in itself is interesting

Bottom speed is under 4.o the rest are 4.1

Register Device?

Anyone know how to register their phone in the Developer Portal? I must have entered my 2G when I signed up and just "bricked" my 3GS.

I am having way worse signal issues with this upgrade. I could only deathgrip to 1 bar previously and now I can easily deathgrip to searching with no signal. Also experiencing way more dropped calls.

Well, dropping more bars would be consistent with the “fix” promised by Apple. The reception was always bad, we just didn’t show you how bad before. But if you’re dropping more calls, that’s another story.

Proximity Sensor

Proximity Sensor problem is not fixed on 3GS.

I've had the proximity sensor problem on my 3GS since 4.0 GM.

A tip when calling is to turn on VoiceOver via tripple-click Home button. Now instead of pressing speaker, mute, etc.. You will only hear VO speak it. Annoying? Yes... but not for the other caller(s).

BTW: Have not found anything new with VO. (well dragging the turn off slider now works with VO, yay..) All old bugs is still there. Seems like a placeebo to me.
