New macOS update boot-screen?
1686006209948.jpeg

Usually, the progress bar is right underneath the Apple logo...

Doesn't seem to be the case with macOS Sonoma...

When are they gonna concentrate on optimizing performance and realize users dont care about all this fluff they are adding?
Right after they realize that most users don't need that much more performance and and work on adding interesting features, however gimmicky they might seem to some users.

Computers spend much more time waiting on users than the other way around, regardless of what I personally would like to have.

Has anyone done any testing on Parallels yet? Just curious how much is broken on day one.
I have Parallels Desktop running on Sonoma Developer Beta via my 2021 14" MacBook Pro. Works flawlessly. Running a Windows 11 VM. Tested several apps inside Windows 11 and everything worked as expected. YMMV.

does macOS sonoma also brings the new dictation and grammar correction of ios 17?

Let's just go over and realize Apple has this love/hate with widgets in macOS: macOS 10.5 Leopard first debuted (or was it in Puma?)!

Like this was here with Mac OS X Puma for a long while. Then to get rid of it only to bring it back again seems ridiculous. Also this constant re-iteration of Exposé, then Mission Control, into ?? This really needs to stop.

Where are the updates to the open-standard UNIX-based foundation on the kernel?!
We used to get huge advancements a while back yet this stopped. Why?!

I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for saying this, but other than Dark mode, there is not ONE feature added to macOS that I use that's been added since 10.5/6. I honestly cannot think of a single one.

So, I spent over 2 hours now on macOS Sonoma, focusing specifically on the "Profiles" and "Web Apps" features on Safari.

In short:
  • Profiles don't work (at least not yet) like they do on Chrome - you can't easily switch between different profiles. There is no toggle (at least that I can find in the Safari UI) that allows you to switch.
  • Web Apps - work EXACTLY like they do in Chrome, except, I think, it is much easier to create them in Safari than in Chrome (File > Add to Dock vs Chrome: hamburger menu > More Tools > Create Shortcut > check the box "open as window").
  • I also spent some time adding widgets to the desktop, and they are neat but not really a "must-have" feature, IMHO. Just more evidence that Apple is tightening its screws on that whole "eco-system lock-in" strategy.

So I guess the login screen has been minimized and placed at the bottom of the screen. Way small on a 4K screen with the More space option.

Interesting that one no longer needs a full installer to upgrade to Sonoma.

Yet the full installer as well as an ipsw file are still available for the first beta.

Sonoma still allows for a bootable usb to be created and for this the full installer IS still required. The instructions to do this are at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sonoma-bootable-usb.2391748/ for Sonoma.

If you have older systems apple have a more genereic page for it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

and Sonoma will probably be added to that page when it is released.

Maybe the fact that this is like a dot release as opposed to be worthy of a whole version bump?

Any changes to the UI to improve Stage Manager?

Is it really that hard in Chrome? Even in Edge its just a little icon in the address bar to make a website an App.

Whats the problem?
I would have it a bit less obstructive, as it is on the iOS. Also the UI itself it quite old at this point, doesn't match the rest of the OS. It's been tweaked in iOS since iOS 13, one would think that 4 years would be enough for this relatively minor change to make its way to macOS too.

I think it is really just part of a bigger picture whereby apple try to make upgrades easier, especially for places that have hundreds of computers like schools, etc. This is not new to Sonoma.

I saw this:
  • "Faster upgrades: macOS 12.3 or later offer a new software upgrade path to macOS 13 without the need to run a larger full installer app or authenticate as an administrator."

at https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/deployment/dep950aed53e/1/web/1.0

and so the that fact one can now upgrade to macOS 14 without a full installer should not come as a surprise.

Chromium profiles absolutely suck compared to Coherence X. Entirely unusable once you learn the value of using real compartmentalized apps (not the SSB stuff per se, but keeping concepts, clients, research, etc. together).

Can the Health app come to macOS please? Sometimes I want to have a look at my various data, or simply add input (medication taken, etc.).

For the rest, I'm quite impressed. Wasn't expecting so much.

I'm hoping that they can get this one to be better on more machines than the current mess. Otherwise, I'll be on Monterey too long.

I know its a little change, but I like that the password field and user icon is now at the bottom of the screen. So far no issues on my personal M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. I'll be updating some of my work machines that I keep in the beta and after validating software run through an MDM deployment. I love this time of year to see what works and what doesnt.
