Apple Releases First Beta of visionOS 1.1 to Developers

Apple today released the first beta of an upcoming visionOS 1.1 update for developers, allowing developers to test new features ahead of the software seeing a public launch. This is the first beta version of visionOS software that Apple has made available since the headset launched last Friday.

The visionOS beta can be downloaded by going to the Settings app on the device and toggling on developer betas. A registered developer account is required, and Apple recommends making a backup before installing new software.

visionOS 1.1 brings Apple Device management to the Vision Pro. With this functionality, IT departments at companies and educational institutions can manage Vision Pro headsets in the same way they manage iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said that Apple believes the Vision Pro will have a range of enterprise uses, from assisting in surgeries to managing warehouses and providing guides for complex mechanical work.

Apple's enterprise marketing head Jeremy Butcher told TechCrunch that the company wants to give businesses the tools they need to manage the Vision Pro at scale. "So the good news is we've got a lot of great technology to bring over to Vision Pro in that regard," he said. Device management on the Vision Pro will include managed Apple IDs, single sign-on, identity management, and security.

The visionOS 1.1 beta adds support for resetting the Vision Pro on device should the user lose their passcode, and according to Apple's release notes, users can now reposition volumetric scenes closer than before, enabling easier direct interaction with the volumetric scene content.

Apple may have also made some updates to the Persona feature in visionOS, as updating to the visionOS 1.1 beta requires the Persona to be redone. It is not yet clear what is improved, however.

Seeing as VisionOS 1.0.2 is already a beta version for all practical purposes, it probably doesn’t hurt to install an actual beta. As long as it doesn’t brick the device, bugs are bugs and 1.0.2 is already full of bugs.

I hope Apple adds a favorites bar to Safari. It’s ok to use the Sidebar on the left for bookmarks, but an actual favorites bar would be so much more convenient.

The article was updated from what was there a few minutes ago to mention enterprise options whereas previously it didn’t know what was in the beta. Hopefully that’s not all that was there or else it’s not worth installing it.

Sadly, it’s not there. The best alternative is to open the sidebar and finger click on bookmarks and navigate to favorites. It’s less convenient but at least it works better than not having a sidebar. Apple, please add a favorites bar.

Even though I'm not a fan of warfare, it's reality, so imagine a jet fighter controlling a drone plane as if he's sitting inside of it. He can look around, again in 3-dimensional space.

Imagine a doctor being able to get a true 3-dimensional view of the inside of a person's body while they are still breathing.

Much of this technology currently exists, but displayed on a mostly 2-dimensional plane, or if they have a 3-D view, the image quality is a major compromise.

Vision Pro's tech changes all of that. A whole new world is opening up.

You are living in a fantasy if you believe that. Let me remind you, TWO. HOUR. BATTERY. LIFE. Plus not hot swappable batteries. Would trust a doctor wearing this knowing that limitation? They most certainly cannot be tethered to a wall while doing surgery. HoloLens and Magic Leap have already had YEARS in the enterprise space with TRUE AR products. Why would AVP now “open up a whole new world”?

You can tether the included battery back to another larger USB-C battery pack (I think I saw some Youtuber do that).
