I agree. I don't want an iPhone/iPad/iPod as a workstation. How about keeping a version of OSX at least semi-professional.

How is it not professional?

I will still be running Maya, ZBrush, Unity, Houdini, Corel Painter, After Effects, Photoshop, etc on it, I'll just be able to do it while not having to keep 20 million things open since Notification Center will be there.

I think people are over thinking this...

Something called Gatekeeper, and promoting it as a security feature. And all this time I've been told countless times that it's impossible for Macs to get viruses.
This is nothing more than a sneaky way to push the App Store. They know the average user wont even find the setting to disable this and then in iOS X 10.9 Cougar, you can't disable it.

This isn't suggesting OS X is going to get a yearly overhaul, this looks more like a "service pack" just like Windows 7 was a service pack for Vista

I think Apple tend to distinguish between viruses and malware - Gatekeeper is intended to protect you from the latter. At least according to their description.

Whoa, already?

I'm quite new to macs. Is this normal for such a quick release?

Usually Apple has released a new version roughly every two years. It seems like they may be switching to an annual release schedule, with less expensive, more incremental updates.

Really looking forward to the AirPlay Mirroring!

Same here! It'll be nice not having people hover over me while showing them how to do something in software, I can output it right to the TV.

Although its not something I'd use a ton, it will still be VERY useful for when I do need it!

What specific features are considered needed for semi-professional that you are now removed from OSX?

how is fixing the problems a bad thing?

I don't think they should include Games Centre myself as it's not a patch on Xbox Live and the Windows integration, or Steam, and Apple doesn't exactly throw it's support behind Mac Games...

That's what they need to do first, support games on the Mac. The way they are going we will have Gameloft games from iOS on the Mac?

Most of the rest of it looks good though.

Damn! I was hoping they would fix Lion first :) Still on Snow Leopard.

Now will have to wait for a Stable Mountain lion before upgrading, going to be a while. And if Mountain Lion incorporates more crap from iOS into OS X, I will happily stay on Snow Leopard. At the same time I expect Apple to largely abandon the desktop market, matter of time before pro apps and Mac Pros are gonners. Wonder if they will keep the iMac around or morph that with the Apple TV concept...

I doubt they'll completely rid of the pro apps/market. A lot of people use macs to create music, movies, etc. It would be counterproductive to get rid of them.

I'm starting to think this may be the last Mac OS X update that will support the Core 2. Quoted from Macworld about AirPlay mirroring (Apple says that only Macs with second-generation Intel Core processors can use this feature.) Out of all the features of Mountain Lion this is the one I wanted to use most and I can't, just like when they pulled the same thing with AirPlay mirroring and the first gen iPad.

What's not professional about it ? Last I checked, they haven't removed all the professional goodness (unless to you professional is the UI candy... ugh... that has nothing to do with professional).

I know you love to just write crap to stir the pot but please explain how it's no longer professional? I don't expect an answer. You seem to drop relying to most fo what you write, kind of like NE receivers in the SUper Bowl.

Will those developer certificates be free? Or, do you have to sign up as a Mac developer and pay the $99?

As much as I like Steam on the Mac (it sealed the deal for me to switch from PC), it is still clunky.

That being said, I don't think Game Centre is all that either.

Hmm... I just said a lot about nothing there! I guess both could be improved!

Baidu + Weibo + Tudou/Ku6/etc. I believe that's targeting the "Greater China Region", not just China. I'm glad to see Apple reducing reliance on google.

Maybe they will have Naver as default search engine option for Koreans?
