True, and it's probably why Apple hasn't cared much about preventing software piracy on it's lesser titles. They were planning on having this horrible albeit convenient app distribution method become the norm. Goodbye copy/paste/serial # installations.
What do you mean?

You shouldn't have to buy a new version of an OS to fix bugs that causes the current version to not function properly. This is why, while I like Windows 7, will never pay MS money for it.

thats a valid point and I agree but this release also brings new features. Also with a yearly release cycle it may go free of charge like iOS - but I'm not holding my breath on that one LOL

This "gatekeeper" aka Sandboxing could be a blessing in disguise.

Might mean less kernel panics due to software. If an app crashes it won't affect the kernel as much.

Will there be resolution independence? Would like a way to increase text size, menu bars, etc. Everything on the 15" MBP with 1680x1050 screen just looks too small.

So Snow Leopard is to Leopard as Mountain Lion is to Lion.

This I like a lot. These update heavy and feature light OS releases are very nice. I think ML is being released so fast because either:

They feel Lion needed it
or
They are working on OS10.9/OS11 and realise they won't be ready for a while so they are making a quicker 10.8 to cover people till the next feature heavy release is out.

So, if 10.1 was "Puma" and a puma and mountain lion are in fact different names for the same animal, maybe this means 10.8 is a bookend and the last of OS X?

Are Apple seriously saying that one of the top new features is a Notes App? Something that has been built into Mail and syncable to .Mac/MobileMe/iCloud since 10.4 (I think) and the only difference being now that its a standalone App?

iOS is so sophisticated that you barely realise it's there.

That's real UI sophistication IMHO.

Screw iOS. It's not even remotely sophisticated. And what became of the old: "Think differently"?!
I'm a sworn Apple fanboy, but this "take something from iOS, scale it up and call it innovation" is seriously pissing me off. I know, as do everyone else, that Apple is on its way to unify iOS and OS X. And that's fine. Now we've got the things from iOS that make sense incorporated into Lion. Full screen apps and a somewhat succesfull Mission Control. The only thing left is the speed, which apparently Apple forgot right after they were done with SL. Now it's time to turn away from iOS and rethink some of OS X's many strengths..

Don't give us any more Launchpad-like features.. Please.. Apple. Think differently again. I want an iPad with an intelligent incorporation of features from the Mac. Not the other way 'round.

(Sorry guys, I had to blow off some steam.)

There is no such thing as a "pro" OS. This update doesn't hinder me or anyone else in any way.

Unifying OS's between mobile devices and computers is very important for the way we live today. Microsoft is doing the exact same thing with Windows 8, and its a GOOD thing.

I completely disagree. Notebooks, desktops and servers are different beasts than mobile gadgets and those devices use completely different interaction models for good reasons. My computers do not have a touch interface nor do they have an on screen keyboard. They also have much larger screens and perform completely different tasks than a mobile gadget. Trying to force the same user interface onto them not only does not make any sense, it's counter-productive and simply idiotic to even think about it. That's why Unity for Ubuntu Desktop Linux is a stupid idea and why people already hate Windows 8's Metro interface. The developers should leave the tablet interfaces on tablets. That's where they make sense. On a regular computer, no.

Stupid question. If I pay $99 for developer program I will get the preview of Mountain Lion and the updates. But does that mean I don't have to buy it when it comes out for public?

The default setting is to allow everything, just like before. But the fact that a feature like Gatekeeper is in the OS does not bode well. It's rather clear where they're going with this: It's the final grace period for developers to obtain a certificate for their software. After that, it is very likely that Gatekeeper will no longer tolerate software from "unknown sources". And after that... Welcome to the iOS software distribution model.

As I have mentioned in one of my previous posts the default setting is not to allow everything, but to allow applications from the App Store and from signed developers.

So Snow Leopard is to Leopard as Mountain Lion is to Lion.

I would say they are just doing their regular job....what you mentioned will become true when it will be about to release 10.9, and they would take some time to release 11.0 which would be the major release I think.

I would rather them really polish Lion than to release some "new" OS.

True. There are far too many bugs in Lion, some of which I can easily replicate (to the shocking amazement of a Genius at my last Apple Store visit who had a rather snotty perspective on the "awesomeness of Lion", as he put it). This is in stark contrast with IT mac specialists in my work environment of whom I have shared many a discussion with and have thought of Lion as the 'Vista of Apple'. In fact, they are delaying the release of an upgrade of our institution-based VPN.app for Lion while continuing to maintain upgrades for Snow Leopard. None of the mac computers in our institution have been upgraded to Lion OS.

Instead of releasing upgrades for Lion OS, Apple's move to release a new OS for the sake of three new apps will only create concerns of more bugs and issues in the new OS. This move of Apple appears to be more of a rash one, if you ask me. If their intent was to generate revenue, I would have been more comfortable paying for those apps specifically (either individually or as an 'iLive' suite like the iLife/iWork) than paying for a likely more buggy new OS.

Stupid question. If I pay $99 for developer program I will get the preview of Mountain Lion and the updates. But does that mean I don't have to buy it when it comes out for public?

No, it doesnt. You would just have to buy a proper licence even as a Developer.

The tag line says it all. :( OS X is officially a "general consumer" OS. Was hoping for some power features. Mainly, an alternative to "Missing Control". Should I be surprised?

As an adult that really tries to use his mac in an adult business environment it's getting harder and harder to do folks.

I don’t feel like any of these UI and personal use type features are de-professionalizing the machine or OS.

You need to “get close” to the OS? Fire up a terminal session.

You want a non-GUI-ish app/data interface? Install Quicksilver.

I never feel like anything done in terms of OS visual embellishment (or personal features that are run-as-you-need) effect the use of my machine in an “adult environment”. I’m using my machine with major Federal clients, used it as a VC presentation last week, with all our clinical analytic clients.

Heck, so many of the Windows machines I see on desktops have silly wallpapers, OS aesthetic tweaks, etc., and I don’t think those users are any more or less professional based on how their OS looks.

As long as my OS allows me to generate professional results, whether it’s authoring a document, or developing applications, I’m fine with it. If it has some extra features that let me send text messages to my wife and make a note we need milk, that’s great too! :)

Just my $0.02

*****amazing new features in mountain lion*****

1.) Full screen mode on multiple screens
2.) A non disappearing cursor
3.) Save As
4.) Non crashing Textedit
5.) Reverted scrolling
