Any Developer here can tell us if there are any significant bug fixes or performance improvements in this version?

I have an iPhone 6S so I don't care about portrait photos.
Nothing apart from faster animations. Seems smoother than 10.0.1 - that's all the info I can muster.
[doublepost=1474573846][/doublepost]
Can anyone confirm if the build number is the same as the developer beta (14B55c)? Thanks!
Yes. It's the same build.

I bet we'll soon see a lot of new camera apps that add this fake bokeh "Portrait mode" to any cell phone camera. Seems it would be easy, just take two pictures one in focus another not and stitch them, just like the Apple software is doing.

Did you _really_ think you were going to get a DSLR quality camera from a lens (or two) that can sit on your little finger?

No, sir. I tried to clarify that in my messages. But I do think over time Apple will improve the lens and software to get closer to that reality.

Let's see how funny you are when Galaxy S8 comes out this fall?

I'm not attacking the iPhone 7! just the dual lens, it's a gimmick! remember after 2 years..you heard it from me first!

To be fair, about month ago..I also thought dual lens it's cool feature, but I was wrong!

Your preaching to the wrong crowd man lol, go to a samsung fanboy website if you want to throw these sort of punches
[doublepost=1474581885][/doublepost]
Thanks! No need to switch from the developer beta I think. Public beta usually updates at a longer pace.
Not as much nowadays, it's on par with the developer version maybe a couple of days later maybe a week max

Sure, but any photographer worth his salt will be able to tell it's nothing more than a digital effect.

The iPhone is for regular folk who can have an amazing camera built into their cellphone. Not for "photographers worth their salt." If you're so impressively professional, stick with your dedicated work tools and apply only appropriate criticism toward these 0.28-inch-thin, more broadly capable, and far more popular, consumer devices.

I'm just surprised that the portrait mode works in landscape mode and it doesn't seem to faze anyone.

In terms of camera performance, looks like Apple managed to almost, but not quite, reach the S7's performance. Unless you use the zoom, of course. In this case, the S7 obviously can't keep up with the 7Plus's dual camera.

It's not perfect, but I'm sure it will improve over time. As it is, since you get both the original and depth mapped image you can open them as layers in Photoshop and clean them up using a layer mask. Here is an example of the original off the camera and a 30 second 'fix' in Photoshop. This was just a test snapshot.

[doublepost=1474584777][/doublepost]Here is another example of an image straight off the phone. It's not bad, you have to understand how the camera/software is going to react and what the limitations are but it opens a lot of possibilities. This is a pretty easy shot that looks much better having the subject isolated. Can I find fault? Yep, but I still think it's a lot of fun and I can't wait to see how far they can push this.

Thanks for posting those samples. There has been so much misunderstanding about this feature here. Dual cameras are not new, and simulated bokeh is not new either. But this seems like the first genuinely USABLE implementation. From what I have read, the other smartphones with dual cameras don't do the effect very well, and the single camera implementations (whether via smartphone filters or in regular digicams) are totally unusable.

No one is claiming this can replace a DSLR with a solid portrait prime lens, but for day to day use it is going to be great to have this capability to isolate your subject with a smartphone camera.

Beta 10.1

Still has invisible Apple Music delete button

Still no clear all

Timer on iPhone 6 Plus still doesn't work.

Auto scrolling when typing in an online form still doesn't happen...

This bokeh effect its nothing new to smartphones. Galaxy S7 already surpassed the DSLR by having a faster autofocus

Ha. Surpassed a DSLR? Not even close.

Why are they applying a generic Gaussian blur and not a more convincing Camera blur? Seems like a wasted opportunity. Unless it's intentional feature creep. You can really see the difference in the comparisons to the Sony. I apply fake bokeh in Photoshop all the time using the Camera blur operator. Works great.

I think they should have blurred the foreground as well but that may prove to be a much harder thing to do than the background. The photos from 10.1 I have seen with the Portrait effect applied look a little unnatural with the entire foreground being in focus.

Samsung's phone cameras are awesome, but a bokeh effect without depth mapping can never be as good as well-implemented dual lens solution. The depth mapping is necessary to apply blurring relative to the depth of field. Without it you just get one object in focus and the rest uniformly blurred. Such an effect can work in simple scenes but it looks fake in a scene with objects at varying distances.

Still, they should also blur the foreground too but see my comment above. I imagine blurring the foreground to get a real depth of field like a camera would be more difficult. Or maybe not.

Feeling bad for the lonely macrumors guy who’s only friend is a statue. :( Please tell me you were just too excited about this beta and just didn’t want to wait for one of your friends to come over and pose for the portrait beta. :)

Ah, how could I forget!! Does anyone want to buy my 7+ 128GB? I need to buy an S7 now.

Just return it, the phone has only been out a week now.

The effect does blur the foreground. Check out the TechCrunch article.

I would really like the swip to unlock returned to the iPads. The main way I use my iPad is on my desk, and swip to open is much better.

Only if you isolate the "performance" to your own set of criteria. The S7 and Iphone 7 are at most a wash (and its a much smaller phone too), the Iphone 7+ off course kicks its butt and once they programmatically create all sort of real time blurs and depth map effects with their massively fast CPU, it will kick it even harder.

I believe this feature accelerates reducing market size of DSLR/Compact camera further(in steadly reducing though). I guess frequent purpose of carrying heavy/bulky DSLR/CC on travel is to take bokeh photo, so they will replace their DSLR to iPhone Plus or other smartphones which have similar feature.

are you reporting those issues?

and there is a "clear all", but sadly only for 3d touch devices...

Of course, I don't suppose it'll be a cool feature until Samsung adds it to the S8 now that Apple has shown them how to do it properly

Things like simulating bokeh are nice little added touches, but they aren't the main reason for them being there. The real benefit to be had from Apples dual camera is the *ahem "optical" zoom.

Having the ability to get closer to a subject without having to resort to digital zoom is a definite added benefit. As anyone who's ever tried getting a close up of say, a butterfly, before the bugger flys away will tell you.

And until phone manufacturers come up with an alternative means to add optical zoom, by shrinking the required lenses and components and without resorting to those monstrosity phone/camera hybrids that Samsung tried pushing out, dual cameras are the next best option.

In his defence that is how Samsung (and others) have been doing it with single lens cameras. So it's easy for people to get confused.

Jebus what's wrong with me today, I'm defending people instead of writing a long waffling explanation???? Meh, it'll come :D

Is anyone's iPhone 7 (plus) having issues getting your health data to show after installing this beta? My health profile was also defaulted to "not set".

I believe average people will go nuts for the portrait feature.

I own a Canon 60D, but I'm absolutely not an expert: these pics look convincing to me.
