Apple Releases First Public Beta of macOS Ventura 13.3

It would be nice if Apple bothered to flip the switch that would make USB C -> HDMI 2.1 adaptors and 4K120Hz just work out of the box (on pre M2 Pro/Max Macs) without having to bother with firmware updates, EDID editing, etc.
But that's probably asking for too much

Have it on my work computer which was enough for me to decide it would NEVER go any any computer I own.
I HATE HATE HATE the iPad like system preferences, they are harder, less intuitive, bloated, look wrong, function wrong.
Go on Apple make it worse, make it all look like Windows 3.1

Did they fix the photo stack in Messages? When the stack is swiped by mouse or trackpad to view the next or previous photo the graphics go off the rails. At first I thought my hardware was failing, but went to an Apple Store and confirmed it on M1, M2, and Intel machines. At the store, the Macs were freezing up and needed a hard restart.

I wondered what was causing that. Thank you.

The latest Adobe update for Lightroom un-broke the tethering problem with Nikon cameras. I need this functionality for studio work. This was a combined problem that emerged in the first released version of Ventura between Adobe, Apple, and Nikon.

I am scared to death of updating further -- even to the latest 13.2.1 version. If the update breaks it again, I'll be screwed. Tethering was down for four months since the Ventura release.

We shouldn't be so pins-and-needles about updating. I'll probably stay away from 13.3 -- and likely -- anything beyond that.

I think I'll survive without extra emojis...

I spent time with it. I hate it. the previous setup was one of my favorite parts of the Mac OS VS windows settings.
It's never really bothered me, you can now switch between the different preference windows without moving backwards-and-forwards through a panel of icon settings. You can use the pulldown View to see 40 categories in alphabetical order, you can also use Siri or spotlight to find the system settings you want much faster.

Since I use both IPadOS and MacOS a lot I don't see that much similarity. IPadOS has a much longer scrollable system setting listing compared to MacOS, it's really awful comparably. The design is more cumbersome to navigate. IPadOS just doesn't have the same windowed GUI MacOS Ventura does. Yes it's more likely that iOS/IPadOS will go the direction of MacOS then the opposite as Loungevibes05 posted. That stage manager was certainly a attempt to mimic MacOS a bit on a iPad.

In this latest MacOS 13.3 beta 1 we found Apple has kept adding some things such as a new toggle inside of Advanced Display Settings that allows you to have resolutions shown as a list rather than right click then you see "show list". So as expected Apple continues to fine tune system settings for some time.

Expect it to be very similar when MacOS 14 shows up a WWDC2023.

That's true, but I do really prefer the old layout better.
I miss that it's not possible to go ”back" and ”forward” in the redesiged System Settings.

Maybe I just need to get used to the new layout – I'll let some more time pass. :)

the new system prefs is just so disorganized, things are random, not even alphabetical order in groupings of things. general became a catch all for important thing which are now buried, windows style 3 deep instead of being top level like before. new prefs are a train wreck. the old prefs app won’t run, in case you thought of trying that 😢😢😢
why do you think they would use alphabetical order since they do not use it in ios Setup for apple apps.

The “buried” part and it being “Windows style” really agree with. Never something I liked in Windows – a press of a button in a setting spawning yet another window where some more settings are. Hmmmm…

At least Microsoft are trying to step away from that with their new settings GUI.

Since you have M2 Pro/MAX, it already has a HDMI 2.1 port. So I assume that a HDMI 2.1 cable should work well for you to get 444 4k 120hz 10 bit. The problems of USB C -> HDMI 2.1 adaptors and 4K120Hz are mostly concerned by me and other M1 series users, as well as M2 users.

Any fix for the massive CPU spike/use using multiple external monitors on Macbooks? Also have they fixed the missing high DPI settings for 4k external monitors?

Actually this 13.3 beta 1 is pretty good all things considering, aside from some commercial software devs that never are up to date. I shall mention no names. :D
I used to trust the late .0 betas more than the .0.1, .1, etc. betas. I think I need to update my thinking on this.

Any chance they have fixed the external monitor recognition? Just got my M2 Mini and a 32" LG 4K monitor, it was fine until I was done migrating, then restarted and upgraded to 13.2.1 and now it registers my monitors default resolution to be 1080p so I have to use scaling to get the UI reasonable, but not the best first 36 hours with a new setup

Safari 16.4 changes

New Features

  • Added improvements to audio quality for web video conferencing.
  • Added support for a subset of the AudioSession Web API.
  • Added support for AVCapture virtual cameras.
  • Added support for inbound rtp trackIdentifier stat field.
  • Added support for the AV1 codec in the MediaCapabilities API.
  • Added support for video stats overlay with developer tools enabled.
  • Added support for VTT-based extended audio descriptions.
  • Added support to allow a site to provide an “alternate” URL to be used during AirPlay.
  • Added video-only support for Web Codecs.
  • Added WebRTC support for hardware AV1 decoding on supported device configurations.
If you look at Develop menu I see these unchecked
WebCodecs AV1 codec
WebRTC AV1 codec
WebRTC H256 codec
WebRTC VP9 profile 2 codec

Of course so far YouTube doesn't show AV1 running.
Maybe Safari will finally be usable soon; not worth considering as a desktop browser until it supports 4K (AV1) video on YouTube.

That is not going to happen.
Looking back to MacOS X 10.1 (2002) there was no real evolution of MacOS X -> MacOS system settings to the Ventura implementation for 20 years. All you saw was more Icon based different preference windows to navigate though. Could say its was one of the most familiar aspects of MacOS for that long a time. Yes many miss it, thats a given, but its gone now. :)

I don’t see a mention in the release docs about the SMB issue (I have looked at the Apple discussion forums and the icon changing thing does not work for me).
