Wow. This may be the one, fellas. I perceive quite a huge leap in responsiveness and speed.

And not a little possibly placebo or because of the update induced reboot thing, as always, no. SUBSTANTIAL INDEED. I wonder if they hired new people for the Homepod team or restructured things internally, like Netflix did recently with the Apple TV team after years of complaints but now, finally, it seems VERY fast and snappy. I´ll give it a couple of days to be completely sure and report back, but so far, it looks VERY GOOD.

And this problem has been present since Homepod day 1 in 2018, more or less. Siri implementation on the Homepods always has been way worse than on IOS.

The update has stopped my whole smart home from working, I’ve tried restarting everything etc., nothing is responding in the Home app.

This has been an issue for me since the HomePod 17os release so I was excited that this update is meant to fix it. Nope hasnt made any difference at all.

Hopefully this trash Siri will be better now. My HomePods (2 of them) suffered from this unresponsive Siri bug.

Me: Siri,turn the lights off
Homepod: ……..
Homepod: ……..
Me: Echo, turn the lights off.
Echo: *turns lights off instantly*
HomePod: “this is taking a little longer than expected”
HomePod: “sorry, I’m having trouble connecting right now”
Me: “Siri, don’t worry. The Echo has already done it.”

Hopefully this actually fixes Siri but I have very low expectations.

This sounds exactly like my Siri lol.

The update took my whole network down and made all my smart stuff unreachable. I tried restarting my hub and Ethernet switches, but they would fail again after minutes. It’s working now. I had to plug out all the HomePods and all my network gear. Then plug the network gear back in, then plug the HomePods back it. What a faf

It eventually did update but it kept giving me error messages in the home app.

Oh yeah. First it downloaded it. Then it downloaded it again, apparently (the little circle started from the beginning on its own).

And then, an INSTALL button appeared, and I had to manually tap on it.

Finally, when I did, it took like 6 minutes to finish.

So glad to hear of everyone’s problems with downloading and installing it. Mine couldn’t even be bothered to be aware of its existence in order to download it or install it. Keep refreshing it, keeps telling me that I’m on an up to date firmware. So I guess I’m stuck on useless 17.1

I wonder why there's no update for the Apple TV ? I always want my Apple TV to be my hub so it makes me nervous to update the HomePods without it.

No worries. Its true that usually, Homepods updates come in tandem with Apple TV updates because they both run tvOS, but every now and then, homepods are updated on its own (mostly for critical fixes, like this one).

Try force quitting the home app, reopen it, and check updates again.

My god. I thought my ho was broken. It would light up when you say hey siri and then just turn off again

Alongside iOS 17.1.1, Apple released HomePod 17.1.1 software to fix a bug that could cause some HomePod speakers to respond slowly or fail to complete requests.

Today's update comes a couple of weeks after the release of the HomePod 17.1 update, which added Enhance Dialogue for the original HomePod and the HomePod mini.

HomePod‌‌‌‌‌‌ software is installed automatically on the ‌‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌ unless the feature is disabled‌‌‌‌, but the ‌‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌‌‌‌ can also be manually updated in the Home app by following the instructions in our HomePod‌‌ update how to.

Has anyone experience problems with volume on HomePods since this release? I usually turn the volume to 50% but now I have to put it at 100% for a normal volume.

Just tested my original pair and don't seem to have the problem either. Don't forget to also check on the Apple Support Communities forums. Good luck. Also: make sure you don't have any 3rd party equalizer apps or such going.
