Please Enlighten Me

Why are some HP printers supported and some not? Why do I have to get a third party driver to make my Color LaserJet 1600 work on the mac? And if a third party can make the driver, why wouldn't HP ... or Apple for that matter?

I know there is a really logical answer but I just don't get it.

I have a HP scanner whose drivers weigh in at a ridiculous 300MB or so; the HP website it just a link to a zipped copy of all the files on the CD.

It's the only driver CD I keep around.

Mine works fine. There might be an issue with the printer itself.

nah the printer is fine i can use this fine on other systems XP included, just OSX seems to not be able to scan directly from the scanner

it used to work perfectly fine. never even updated the machine actually since day 1 its been running as is smooth and then it stopped "detecting the cable" when scanning directly in. most of the time the software would allow a scan in..so who knows.

Can't get it to show up!!!!

I'm confused by these updates. When Leopard came out it didn't support my printer (a cheapo DeskJet F2180) so I downloaded some drivers from HP. This includes all the tools for Scanning stuff, some Photo tools (which I never use), and various device utilities. Will this driver package update all these tools as well or is it just an underlying thing? Could it in fact break these tools?

Also if I check 'HP Software Update' it says there are no updates available direct from HP.

What should I do? Stick the Apple drivers on, or just ignore them given that the printer prints fine as it is?

Sort of in the same boat, but I have an HPC5180 All in one, which is included in the update and for the life of me I cannot get it to show up via Software Update. I have it hooked up via TC. I went to the direct link, d-loaded 450 MB then when I went to install it, it said it would take up 1.0GB of space.

Any idea why I can't get it from Software Update? I've really had no problems, but the only thing that is sort of annoying is it takes about 20-30 seconds for it to start printing after I hit print. Not a big deal but my older printer was a lot faster.

Me, too!

Is the reason this file is so big is that my printer is not direct connect USB? My (aging) LaserJet 1200 is on a wireless print server, and I'm assuming this 400+MB is because it contains *every* printer driver since it can't identify which one you have? Where is this 1GB going? Shouldn't it just replace the existing drivers? And didn't we just do this a few months ago with v1.1?

Fortunately, I can still print after the update - whew . . . :)

Similarly, this is a *printer* driver update, right? So there is no scanner update (unless your printer is an all-in-one with a scanner)? I've also got an older HP ScanJet 4670, and I've pretty much given up on the HP driver in favor of VueScan. This scanner has some "one touch" buttons that never worked with OS X, in spite of numerous driver updates. And the HP s/w is really slow compared with VueScan.

Thanks . . .

I wonder if it will mess up my LaserJet 1020, whose software has not historically been fun to install, as you must download the 1022 driver and then the software convinces itself that you actually have a 1020. That's fun.

My 1020 worked with the 1022 driver until I installed the HP Printer Driver 1.1 (not 1.1.1) update.

Since then it just doesn't work. At all. Even after re-installing the hacked 1022 drivers.

Did you install 1.1? I might as well try 1.1.1 since my 1020 doesn't work now anyway.

That would be nice if it worked. Saves giving my 1020 away if it does, The 'hack' worked for a while then stopped completely for me. Seems that the entire chassis for that printer isn't supported. A few oem base lasers on it and none of them are Mac compatible.

Mind you it always seemed to draw the paper in at a slight angle, so maybe its worth getting rid of it.

HP Printer Driver 1.1 likely killed it. It killed mine.

Mine weighed in at 52.4MB too. Rather curious that there are so many different sizes. Perhaps it depends on what other HP driver updates you've installed previously. At any rate, even 52.4MB is huge, let alone 405MB for printer drivers.

hp 1.1.1 breaks everything

I had a hard time getting supplied hp drivers (from HP) to work on 10.5.X I finally got something that seemed to be stable (HP_Installer_PSC5100_v9.7.1.dmg from the website) for my HP C5180 all-in one.

Then along come HP 1.1 system update. This totally broke everything. I had to uninstall everything, then re-install the HP drivers.

I tried it again with HP 1.1.1 update in the last week. This did the same thing. Broke everything. Again I had to uninstall and re-install from the HP drivers.

Now -- I'm looking for a way to permanently stop the upgrade!!!!

If it ain't broke -- don't FIX it.

In my case the 1.1.1 update fixed a "communication failure" issue with my HP OJ Pro L7780.

I purchased it about six months ago. HP drivers were the Feb 08 release. HP then updated the drivers in April so I applied those.

What I was seeing was this:
1. I would print a job and that would work
2. I would submit another job and that would fail with a "Communication Error" posted in the print queue.
3. I would then have to hit the "Pause Printer" button in the queue, wait about 5 seconds and then hit the "Resume Printer". In most cases that would work, but in some cases I would have to repeat this about 4 or 5 times to get the job sent to the printer.

Last week, I finally got disgusted and proceeded to install the update 1.1.1 from Apple. I removed my printer from System Preferences -> Print and Fax, and then added it back selecting the new driver.

I have had no problems since and every job I submit gets printed. I checked back with the HP website and there have been no updates since April.

I think Apple must have fixed/tweaked the HP driver for my printer.

My printer is networked and shared by 5 computers. All of them had the same problem. Now, none of them have problems since applying the update to all of them.

on a somewhat related topic ... does anyone have a way to upgrade HP printer firmware from OS X? I have an old(er) LaserJet 4000N with outdated firmware, G.07.03. The latest for my printer model is G.08.49.

The HP JetDirect embedded web server provides a firmware updater, but only for Windows. There is a method to upgrade via FTP (my printer is setup an IP within the LAN) but only for newer firmware revisions. Basically, the firmware I have is so old it does not support any of the upgrade methods provided to Mac users.

The HP support site is a nightmare to navigate. Any tips?

btw.. for those having printing issues. I would try updating both the drivers and printer firmware.

Help...!

HP LaserJet 1200 OK for me

I'm running the same printer wireless on 10.5.5, and the new update
did not break anything. Yes, the update was huge to download - since
it doesn't see any specific printer hard-wired to the iMac, I guess it
assumes you get everything.

So the question for you is what do you mean it doesn't support the 1200?
What kind of environment do you have: wireless or direct connect?

And I vaguely remember needing to select a "Gutenprint LJ 1200" driver
when I first did this a year or so ago. See if you can find that in the list
of printers, and try to use it.

Hope this helps . . .

Same here - running 10.5.5 with HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 on a wireless network. Try deleting your old printer from 'Print & Fax Preferences' and then select 'Add Printer...' from the printing drop-down menu. Your printer ought to appear in the 'Local Zone' under the 'Apple Talk' pane. If not, make sure that Apple Talk is active under 'Network Settings' - 'Advanced.'
