They removed the Workflow Watch app?!?? Wtf Apple that was one of the most useful watch apps...

"So, for example, you can create a shortcut to do something like turn on the thermostat at home using the Nest app"

This is literally something I'd love to set up a shortcut for as I own a Nest thermostat. I've been trying to do this in the app for 5 minutes. Either this is false advertising or not intuitive.

Apps have to be updated to support it. I’m guessing Nest hasn’t done so yet

I just don’t get the use of this app. I never got the use of workflow either. For example: if I set up a shortcut with an activation phrase of “Siri I’m watching a movie” and it turned on Do Not Disturb, why wouldn’t I instead just tell Siri to turn on Do Not Disturb ??

You are correct in thinking this would be the more efficient way to perform this action but this command is a direct request to Siri in iOS. Shortcuts allows you to chain multiple actions together between apps that normally wouldn't communicate with each other. For example, if you had a morning routine that involved getting a Starbucks coffee, scheduling a Lyft and playing a specific playlist in Apple Music, you could set a shortcut to automate all 3 of these tasks into one (assuming these Apps are eventually updated to support it).

Does anyone know how to set up "When I return home" type of automation? I want to turn on my Home connected lights (run a scene) when I come back home. Cannot figure it out.

You can automate this directly within the Home app on iOS. Create a new Automation (in Automation tab) with When People Arrive. Select the info icon on When: Anyone Arrives, and select yourself. Click next and pick which Scene to run.

That would be great if you could actually open the shared shortcuts, but being limited to just seeing what shortcuts people have created (without being able to re-create them) is kind of useless.
I opened the URL on my phone in Safari and clicked a shortcut to test. It asked to open it in the Shortcuts app, which it did. From there, I could edit it, run it, create an icon on the homescreen etc. All worked well. Just trying to actually think of what I'd like to create shortcuts to do, so I could contribute something myself!

The App has to have support for Siri Shortcuts for this to work. So will need to wait for a Nest update. A few apps I use have just updated with Siri Shortcuts support, including CityMapper which is actually very useful.

Thanks. Bad reporting by MacRumors then as they should've written "you will be able to create a shortcut" instead of "you can create a shortcut." The Nest app still does not have an update to allow this.

Oh, that's cool. Doesn't work on a Mac.

I only really need one short cut at the moment - that is to be able to turn on the personal hotspot when I connect to the USB in the car. Now, can this reworked Workflow app do this... ...can it f***!

I can’t understand why Apple makes it so hard to do this. I’d even settle for the ability to add a button in the control center without having to force touch.

So some things I’d appreciate knowing from early adopters:

- What happens to Workflow after updating to iOS 12. Gone?
- What happens to existing workflows? Important, as I have the now-irreplaceable Download YouTube flow I really would rather keep.

Thanks!

Yes, gone, once you upgrade the app in the app store. Superceded.

Existing work flows are brought forward automatically.

I got as far as recording a Siri command to "turn on the AC," and open the Nest app, but I have no idea how to get it to adjust the temperature setting... sigh

If this is even possible, I can't believe no one has done this already and posted / shared the script!!

It's not possible if or until Nest add the capability. They'd need to integrate with Shortcuts by donating the intent.

Apparently, downloading YouTube videos violates Google’s TOS. As such, my understanding is that the Download YouTube workflow is no longer available. I’m wondering if my new shortcut library would include all of my existing workflows, or just those that are officially supported. Somehow doubt that I will end up with this workflow, as it is not supported by Apple. It was kind of a big deal when this workflow came out, and I really would hate to lose it.

I guess it was just bad reporting by MacRumors then as the article clearly states:

Interesting you can’t change the audio output or have it mirror to say an Apple TV. I use my Apple TV as an intermediary for steaming to speakers. Would have been nice to set up a shortcut to shuffle my playlist and change the output to my Apple TV.

The best way to use this app is to find out what others who benefit from it use it for and try their Shortcuts. I have shortcuts where I can speak to Siri to have her upload my most recent photo to Imgur and copy the direct link to my clipboard. This is very handy online when needing to share an image on a board and needing a link to embed the image. This turns that process into a single word.

Other uses, I can get a printable QR Code for the WiFi network I’m on by saying a word “WiFi code” and entering the password when prompted. The network name is entered automatically.

I can download any video into my camera roll from YouTube using the Shortcuts action.

Speak the body of an article.

Download all the images on a page in one move—handy on certain websites.

What’s so great about the app is the possibilities are endless. And then even basic things such as now when timing my soft boiled egg I can simply say “eggs”. Or to locate that cake recipe I simply say “slice”. Or a link directly to a relavent video on a subject I can save it to one word for convenience.

I had a workflow to download videos from YouTube. Still works.

Yep. Not possible to deep link into apps until they donate intents I'm afraid.

Works for me. Shortcuts; iOS 12 GM. Be sure you are not trying to download a music video or a video with popular music playing over it—all other YouTube videos I’ve tested work fine.

Would be awesome if you could actually use the HomePod as part of shortcuts ... For example, at 7:30, set off an alarm, and then play a certain playlist on the HomePod in my bedroom. Can't find a way to incorporate audio into the HomePod.. I can initiate a shortcut via the HomePod, but it just plays the music through my phone lol.

Thanks both. Never heard of some sort of music video restriction before. So, I just tried downloading to my iPhone a music video I have downloaded before, and this time the workflow fails. The last WF update must’ve crippled it. Thanks Apple.

Interesting. So the workflow I have works in the browser and can save as video, audio or gif. Indeed I've just tried it on a couple of music videos and instead of the content I get a small text file called videoplayback. It still works for other content though. I wonder if the heuristic for finding the content url can be changed for these.
