Ahead of the release of the new iPhone 16 models, Apple has seeded the third beta of iOS 18.1 for the devices. iOS 18.1 beta 3 was actually released in late August for the iPhone 15 Pro models, but now there's a version for the iPhone 16 models. iOS 18.1 beta 3 for the iPhone 16 has a build number of 22B5034o, up from the 22B5034e version released for other devices.

iOS 18.1 introduces the first Apple Intelligence features, such as Writing Tools, Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode, notification summaries, and more, and it is expected to see a public launch in October. The initial launch version of iOS 18 will not include any Apple Intelligence features.

A version of iOS 18.1 available for the iPhone 16 models means people who are currently running iOS 18.1 on their iPhone 15 Pro will be able to transfer their iCloud backups when the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max launch next Friday. Transferring data from one iPhone to another requires that both devices run the same version of iOS, which can be a hassle when betas are involved.

Apple has likely provided iPhone 16 review models to media sites, so the early release of the beta will allow reviewers running iOS 18.1 to set up their test iPhone 16 devices.

iOS 18 will be released on Monday, but the iOS 18.1 beta testing process will continue on for several more weeks.

iOS 18 will likely have its numerous new bugs fixed only around the release of iOS 18.6. That's because Tim Cook doesn't care much about providing user-friendliness to customers, and thus doesn't devote resources towards fixing bugs. Cook saves Apple money by not fixing bugs, and it's one of his many ways to maximize profits and please shareholders.

Guess we know beta 4 isn't arriving this week after 2 weeks.
possibly a re-release for the 15's though to sync up with the new release and bring 18.1 up to parity with 18.0 for things such as the watch app which is missing the new faces

I’ve been running the 18.1 dev beta since the first and it has been pretty stable on the 15PM. This is necessary to move to the new phone so quite welcome.

Maybe the week of the 23rd we’ll see another one.

As someone who is running the 18.1 beta on their 15PM and intends to pre order a 16PM on launch day, this is good news.

I’ve run into issues getting a new phone while running the beta in the past and was concerned this go around. This will certainly make my life easier.

Has anyone else found Siri’s Apple Intelligence to be absolutely useless? I ask basic questions and it just brings up web search results, or brings up something that I didn’t even ask for. I ask for it to bring up pictures I took at a place, and it shows pictures from the web, not from my photos. Siri is worse than before and can’t do anything that Apple said it would

So is this only for the iPhone. Are they not releasing the iPad version yet?

18.1 Beta 2 was the most stable so far. But battery life is still horrid. And Apple Watch Ultra battery is not even lasting a day. But should all improve once out of beta.

Siri enhanced has not been released yet.

So the three features I find to be very useful are the message summaries, the e-mail summaries and the writing tools.

Its nice to get a quick summary of a text on my Apple Watch and the voice to text feature plus the ability to summarize text messages means I can get a quick summary of voicemails people leave me as well which is cool.

I tend to be wordy in my writing so I love the ability to use the writing tools for things like proofreading and making things more concise.

I also like being able to have the writing tools make written text more friendly or professional though I use that a lot less than I use proofreading or making things concise.

I haven’t tested the features that can make a summary, list key points, generate a list or a table but if they work like the other writing tools they’ll have their place in my toolbox.

In short these are early days, Apple is clearly way behind the competition but for me their focus on privacy and the integration into the ecosystem will make the wait worth it in the end.

I’m really looking forward to the improvements to Siri. Specifically the integration with ChatGPT. As somebody who uses ChatGPT it would be great to have that built into Siri. It can be incredibly useful and a big time saver in certain situations. So much so that I’m sometimes willing to go against my better judgement when it comes to privacy in order to take advantage of the time savings. With Apple at the helm I’m hoping we get the best of both worlds. A useful AI powered chat bot you can defer to when necessary without sacrificing your privacy in the process.
