JB often makes the device more sluggish. It's kind of the major downside to jail breaking... not a selling feature on it dude.

Battery life will dependent on what jailbroken things you install. Remember, jailbroken apps don't need approval from apple or get tested for performance

The JB itself only increases boot up time. If the device is sluggish, an app is to blame or you're doing something wrong. The same is true for battery life, it's an app or user error.

can't wait for that one! just bought a ATV3 and it sits collecting dust because the streaming is AWFUL!

My ATV3 downloads faster the the 2. When was the last time you rebooted your network from end to end? I do it once a month, and it seems to keep everything running very well.
1. Shut down (and unplug) ALL devices.
2. Plug in and boot your cable modem, allow time for a full boot.
3. Plug in your Airport devices one at a time, starting from your
cable modem connection, and allow full boot before starting
the next.
4. Plug in and turn on your hubs and other devices.
5. Launch iTunes on your computer and make sure Sharing is on.
6. Plug in your Apple TV3.

Alternatively, you could use static IPs in your house.

I've noticed iOS devices always feel faster right after an update.

I have a theory: There is cache information that piles up and is cleared during an update. Once these caches get too big the OS slows down.

Is this true, and is there any way to clear/reset these caches outside an update if so? The performance difference after installing 5.1.1 is significant and I'd love to be able to gain this any time.

Anyone notice any change in the battery indicator? My iPad was at 88% but after doing this update, it now reads at 99%? Not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

On my iPad 3 it went from 98% to 100% after the update, whereas on my iPhone 4, it went from 48% to 46%.....

The Battery Charge, like iPhone Reception Bars, are not highly accurate meters. Their purpose is to give you a general SWAG on how you're device is doing.

I would guess that Apple tweaked the readout a bit to compensate somewhat for the charge/discharge hysteresis.

Sorry sir, but I have to respectfully disagree:

Security..about 2 JB's ago, I remeber quite distinctively that JB Community closed the PDF hole with PDF Patch before Apple did.

Battery Life is improved with things like Backgrounder that close all multitasking so its not hogging up the device.

People need to wake up and not drink the koolaid from Apple that JB slows down your device and is not secure, and eats up battery

Yes, so you pick one instance where a jailbreak dev was ahead of Apple in patching a vulnerability and hold that up as science that all users should jailbreak? Ok...

Does the word ALPINE mean anything to you? I really don't like having to worry about system services and background processes which are normally sealed off completely all of a sudden being exposed, and vulnerable, if measures are not proactively taken to lock them down and secure them.

When you jailbreak you are exposing the entire file system system wide. Do you trust every tweak and app from Cydia or whatever repo(s) you use? It would be incredibly easy for a malicious one to sneak through and you are wide open for the taking. I don't believe it has ever happened, but it could, and that is a risk I'm not willing to take.

We can have the debate over battery life and stability - I believe both are compromised to one degree or another by a jailbreak - at the end of the day, the choice is yours to make. But don't expect your choice to be the default. Just sayin'.

Maybe it's because the iPhone 4S has Siri, and Siri would work like crap over anything less than 3G, thus ruining the seamless user experience Apple is going for.

Just my hypothesis. :)

Wrong. My 4S connecting to a carrier other than AT&T has the enable 3G toggle.

Yeah,
It's because AT&T is trying to eliminate their EDGE network in order to make more capacity for 3G/4G.

They're already sending free handsets to people with EDGE phones still.

My iTunes just downloaded 800mb for this update. Why anyone would want to do that to their data plan I'm not quite sure.

If it was < 100mb then it would make sense.

The big question is why aren't you doing the delta update instead of the old way where you have to download the full file? This one is on you!

Had problems with the 3G data for around 4 days now and I got this update and it appears to be mysteriously fixed

Go ahead and install it..... you are safe

I'm assuming you are serious, but then you've got 3 down votes!?

So is the info you gave corret or no? Don't wanna run my existing JB, lol.

Also, thanks to techsmith and QuarterSwede for the info!

I'm not having any streaming issues at all. But my problem on both the ATV2 & ATV3 are that my podcasts are not registering as partly or fully viewed. No matter what, they all look like I've never watched them. The badge icons never go away, but accumulate. Plus I see the light come on often, though the units are asleep which never happened prior to the last update.

Can someone tell me how to report iOS bugs to Apple? I’m having a signal/3g problem in which sometimes the 3g will switch to 1x back and forth out of nowhere even with a great signal. I have a Verizon iPhone 4 and I think it could be related to the battery life issues some people have with iOS 5. I noticed if I enter Field Test mode (by dialing *3001#12345#* ) and pressing Send) while this is happening, and I enter the EVDO screen, the network channel is constantly bouncing around to different PCS band channels. However, if I dial *228 option 2 then reboot the phone and check again and the connection is better, the EVDO screen shows a constant lock onto one or two 800mhz channels (like 630 or 770). However, this only last for a few hours or a day. I’ve been through three Verizon iPhones with this issue and I’ve also had Verizon create a trouble ticket to check area towers, but this issue goes on, so now I really think it’s an iOS bug.
