apple software is bloated. that's why the iOS are so slow with anything higher than 4.xxx. the iPods just don't have the ram to handle the bloated software. the updates should have never been released for the iPod. it's ok for the iPhone as it has double the ram, but with every new update it gets more bloated, so unless there's a extremely important software update that address this issue, I never update. I don't want to ultimately have a brick

iOS 5.x performs the same as iOS 4.3.x on every (compatible) device I've used, which is quite the achievement since iOS 5.x has more stuff loaded (such as the Notification center).

Also, the 3GS and iPad have the same 256 Megs of RAM that the iPod touches (3 and 4) have, so Apple does develop the software with that amount in mind.
iOS 6 will probably require 512MB+ devices.

On my 3GS, I do find myself closing programs manually a lot. It's a small price to pay to have a old phone that is capable of running the "latest and greatest" stuff.

Then no future update will. I wonder if its now gone for 3GS & 4 users. Don't get why we 4S users can't have it but they can???

Hello??????? SBSettings???? Gives you option for E and 3G with a single swipe on the top...best cydia tweak ever invented. Currently I am running a 4S on AT&T and am on E only. Battery life is soooo much better....Thanks Saurik

Not every one jailbreaks, or wants to. I'm quite happy with stock firmware. Not going to jeopardize security or stability for a few tweaks - and yes I like SBSettings and have used it on jailbroken devices in the past.

well if you were tethered you did a partial charge!

-------------

Well, I didn´t tether and I started with 86% of battery, after the update I got 90%. It was on my Ipad 3. On my iPhone 4S I had to use the power adapter because it refused to update if I had less than 50% of battery left (I had 23%).

I know apples serves would take a beating, but it would be really nice to get a popup notification when os updates are available.

Also fix 4G->3G transition?

--Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks

I hope the transition between LTE to 3G I experience here in BC with Rogers is fix as well. The "workaround" I used was to shutdown LTE which is a pain in the butt!

I am impressed how well iOS 5 runs on my first generation iPad. I do occassionally get a app closing due to low memory warning that does not happen that often. But those happen when I have a lot of apps open at the same time. Most of the time that is not an issue.

If you wait long enough you should see that the Settings icon changes to let you know there's an update in just the same way as the App Store icon changes when you have app updates available.

Sorry sir, but I have to respectfully disagree:

Security..about 2 JB's ago, I remeber quite distinctively that JB Community closed the PDF hole with PDF Patch before Apple did.

Battery Life is improved with things like Backgrounder that close all multitasking so its not hogging up the device.

People need to wake up and not drink the koolaid from Apple that JB slows down your device and is not secure, and eats up battery

i was jailbroken a few months back, it was a week of crashing, poor battery life and i just got fed up and went back to stock.

Also you really don't understand iOS's multitasking do you? apps are not left open, they're saved states....

Ohhh so that why when you go to the Apple Genius, the first thing he does is CLOSE ALL apps in the multi-taking tray?

Same problem here UK 3 network, it is very annoying

Three disables it on all phones that they sell because they don't have a 2G network.

They rely on Orange's 2G network in areas where they have no 3G coverage (they have really cut back the number of areas where this is the case).

It costs them money every time you use your phone on the Orange 2G network, so they do everything in their power to stop you doing it unless you absolutely have to.

I think you have your terminology mixed up. Bloat is a condition caused by excessive un-needed code. iOS software is increasing in size due to the huge increase in features, not useless code.

Apple is far from the long gone days when some software providers paid their coders a bonus for each line of code they created that made it into released software. When they saw the bloat that it caused, things changed.

You can be sure Apple does all it can to minimize code.

Bloat usually means the introduction of features that people deem to be unnecessary. Of course, that's pretty hard to pin down.

It's never been anything but smooth on my iPhone 4 ...

mine always springs back down and gets to sassy, it's sometimes faster to just open the damned phone and the camera app. It's inconsistent though with that behavior. Sometimes it is smooth... sometimes it's like a trampoline

JB often makes the device more sluggish. It's kind of the major downside to jail breaking... not a selling feature on it dude.

Battery life will dependent on what jailbroken things you install. Remember, jailbroken apps don't need approval from apple or get tested for performance

I own 2 iPad 2's and 2 new iPad's and all 4 DO NOT have ANY problems with wifi. I'm starting to think it could be a network problem for you people.

I have wifi issues with my iPad 2. I can have my iPhone, Macbook and iPad all in the same place and the iPad has less bars and loads pages considerably slower. Pick up my phone and it's fast and so is my Macbook. I think it's definitely a iPad problem.
