35.4MB???? My iPhone 5S says I need 1.2GB free for installation, I only have 500MB (out of 32GB)

This is the error message I get:

Keep in mind the update is 35.4 MB.

It probably only needs it temporarily for moving files around. My only guess is that updates patch iOS by copying the old files to a new directory, patches them, makes sure they were patched right, then deletes the old files and replaces them. In this case the 35 MB would actually contain patches to several files totaling ~1.4 GB spanned across the OS, which all need to be duplicated before shoving the 35 MB of data in.

Convoluted? Yes, but it helps ensure smooth updates and iOS isn't the only one to do this.

Disclaimer: My conclusion is an educated guess at best, and it's details may be a bit fuzzy.

Twitter was the thing doing it to me. If I locked the phone in twitter it wouldn't unlock by finger print. Filed a bug report with apple. Still haven't fixed. Maybe its real tough to fix or they don't consider it worth the effort.

It is perplexing. I don't use a Twitter or other social apps with 5S. I have started to always end any session back to my home screen to see if that improves it. It has helped just a bit.

One thing I noticed after updating is that it turned my Bluetooth on.
Not a big deal, but if you normally run it off, then you might want to check that it is still off.

That's weird. On my 5S the update only weights in at 16.8MB.

How come there's such a big difference from 5S to 5S?

Maybe you, like me, were at 7.0.5 while Americans were still on 7.0.4 ....

Every single iOS update so far ended up with wifi and bt on, every single one, and you realize it just now ???

Stop with these infinitesimal incremental bug fixes and fix the app crashes already.
iOS 7 has been the worst update in regards to app stability.

Depending on which apps you mean, it's probably not even Apple's fault. You need to aim this annoyance at the app's developer.

Since 7.0.5 was denied to the USA , I ain't really giving Apple credit for that one.
It wasn't denied, there was just nothing to update for US models in relation to that update.

Said it was 35 MB, required 1.2GB, cleared 1.5GB to free, updated, blue screen popped up, phone is bricked and restoring through iTunes now.

(iPhone 5s)
So...the phone is not bricked.

Not quite true. Apple released an iOS 1.1.5 security update for users who didn't want to pay for iOS 2.0 (it was a paid update for iPod touch users back in the day).

You're right! I jumped into iOS in the iOS 2.2.1-iOS 3.0 era, so my knowledge of the pre iOS-2 days is pretty hazy.

Anybody else have to do this over wifi? Mine was 14 megs and yet I needed a wifi connection to download it.
Pretty certain any and all iOS updates have always had to be over WiFi (or through iTunes).

Just run the update on a recently-acquired iPhone 4 and it was 12.8Mb on that device, interesting to see the difference in update size between devices.

It also didn't turn my Bluetooth back on after the update!

Less page reloading, have three open now and none reload when I multitask or swap tabs. Feels smoother too but that is probably just me.

The 3GS gets an update? I tought iOS 6.1.3 was the very last one? Or was this a very big exception? More updates in the future?

What about the iPad 1!!!

Oh. Why did I think if it was under "X" megs I could do it over cellular. Thanks for the clarification.
That applies to apps and app updates (up to 100 MB as of iOS 7 I believe), but not for iOS updates.

Weird thing about the Apple TV updates, is that after going through the entire updating process (preparing update, applying update, etc.), they're both still on 6.0.2 (6646.81.1). Must've been a very small update.

Seems like some sort of a security/stability type of update. Perhaps if iOS 5 really required it they might do it, but seems unlikely that would happen. They are probably going back one version at most if its actually necessary.
