This is the single reason why I haven’t upgraded to os26. I use Split View daily, it’s super quick AND I can also four finger swipe between apps. In os26 you cannot do both but have to choose either.
Replying to agree and hope that Apple reintroduces Split View. I have two iPads both still on iOS18 and no plans to install iOS26.

Why is everyone spreading false information constantly. Split View IS NOT GONE. It just requires a few extra taps to get there. Annoying? Yes. But it's still very much possible to have two apps side-by-side. Stop spreading false info!

Accomplishing having two Apps side by side, one way or another with a few more taps ≠ "Split View" the feature.

There's a difference there and the details of implementation and ease of use make up that difference.

It's sort of like PiP as a feature or ..."with just some more work you can resize a browser window and turn off the chrome and get the same effect".

I hope I can drag an app from the dock directly and make it a Slide Over window. Having to do it only from the green button feels like a pain…

But resizable slide over windows sounds interesting

Having to combine elements of the old multitasking with the new one without be tricky, I get it…

But since they already let you choose different multitasking styles in settings, they should just ADD a style that is exactly like iPadOS 18.

One thing I miss from all the previous versions was the ability to select text then choose search online. Now I need to select the text, click the little arrow on the right to open another menu, then click the option to Search Web. It wouldn’t be as bad if I didn’t sometimes click the window in the back rather than on the “>”. In those cases i need to start over.

I’m wondering if they fixed the bug where if you are in jiggly mode and try to Drag an app from one screen across to the next screen it locks up.

After 5 or 10 seconds it would reboot the Springboard and you are back to square one (App didn’t move and no longer in jiggly mode).

I have a 32 GB iPad 8. It wouldn't install iOS 26 due to insufficient space available. I was advised to back up, do a factory reset, and then I would be allowed to install iOS 26. It worked!

Now that the 26.1 update has been released, I again get the same error of insufficient space available. Apple has effectively bricked my "supported" iPad by making me jump through ridiculous hoops to install security updates.

They must be rolling this out very slowly, because it doesn’t even show up on my iPad 13” M4

Well…either it finally became available in my area, or the fact that I opened iPad storage and let it update cleared the way for it to show up. If anyone else has issues, give that a try.

Glad to see slide over coming back in some form. Will be updating my 11" M4 Pro within a few days.

Am I the only one who wants perfectly symmetrical split screen apps? This no longer seems possible. Also, I hope Slide Over can be turned off. It was too easy to accidentally invoke.
If the apps allow it, sure.

Slide Over has to be specifically invoked by a touch command. So, unlike the prior iteration, folks that are easily confused when things happen that they don’t understand can’t accidentally make it happen by swiping or moving a window to a spot on the screen.

Love this new Slide Over, more than the previous one. You can resize an app into a square or whatever you want and move it to the side - really nice for reference apps (when drawing in Procreate/CSP/etc. or sculpting in Zbrush).

iPadOS is truly becoming a beast for creative stuff.
Yeah, and there’s no such thing as a “Slide Over compatible” app anymore. Devs don’t have to have a specific interaction model for it.

(Sorry, I get why some people liked it, but a lot of people wanted proper window management. Hopefully they also bring the old system back as an option for those that want it.)

They kinda spelled out why they did it when they indicated that most users don’t use windowing at all. Their goal was to make “No Windows” truly that. You don’t end up in a split view or slide over situation accidentally anymore. And, as with all higher level features, there’s going to be more steps to know to use it effectively.

If someone outgrew being able to learn “new tricks” between iOS9 and now, then they’re stuck with the lower level features.

Or tap “Look Up”, flick to the bottom of that list, and tap “Search Web”. Much larger targets than the “>”.

It's so hard to get to it. You can't even choose to drag a window into slide-over mode when not using "Windowed Mode."

Obviously everything is subjective. I also respect those who like the window system, but I think one advantage of Apple has always been “focus”, and they shouldn’t maintain 10 different options for multitasking.

I thought the old system was terrible fwiw. Huge improvement in 26.
Sure, it’s subjective.

I think it was much more intuitive for a tablet. We precisely moved away from menus, windows, etc. when multi-touch was introduced, because that doesn’t feel natural in a touch interface. Now I don’t know why we’re going back to that. Despite the good press, in practice I think usage of the new multitasking system will be way lower than the old one.

Guess I’ll be updating to iPadOS 26 in about a week. Wonder how I’ll feel about, or even use, multitasking. Sure wish the selectable Slide Over had always been the case. I detest Slide Over and accidentally triggering it on occasion is why multitasking has been turned off for the vast majority of its existence on my iPads.

Hmm i might finally update my iPP M4 to iPad os 26.1 and enjoy all the multitasking/windowing features finally. My iPhone 15 Pro has been the beta tester for ios 26 so far and its been better than i expected.
