Apple today released an update to its iPhone SDK 3.2 for developers looking to create applications for the company's forthcoming iPad tablet device. The new update is the third beta version of the SDK, and there is no word yet on changes included in the update.

The initial version of the SDK was released late last month alongside the iPad introduction, and was last updated two weeks ago.

really, the only reason i downloaded the first one was to play with the ipad sim. it was lame @ beta 1. im sure its still lame @ beta 3.

It'd be nice to know if there's any info or specs on making epubs for the ibook store.

you dont get to know that. only licensed publishers with apple will be available. its kind of like how only certain ppl can make adult apps now (sports illustrated, playboy, etc.)

Isn't this a bit frustrating for developers? I'm no programmer, but isn't it very likely that apple will release a relatively large 4.0 update with new APIs, basically making this a silly interim step to serve iPad owners between now and then?

If I were a programmer, I wouldn't do anything until June. I would lose the initial rush, but I can't believe that that would be worse than quickly making a version of an app that will likely soon be out of date.

yes, you are right... it is a giant pain that apple replaces the ENTIRE thing, every time. huge download and replace, EVERY TIME. it's ridiculous.

Two things:

1) The initial rush of iPad apps is going to be the only time, as in forever, where your competition will be a relatively low number of iPad specific apps. After some months, apps will get buried as they do now for the iPhone.

2) It's doubtful that the entire app would be out of date. Much of the power of OS4 is speculated to be in the multi-tasking world, with perhaps an even more robust file system. In either case - or many other cases speculated - an app would not likely be "out of date" on the whole. It might benefit from tweaking of course.

Complete speculation. There is absolutely no guarantee of this. Wishing won't make it so.

Even if there is an OS 4.0, it would be silly for Apple to not make it largely compatible with the prior OS.

And based on Apple calling this beta only 3.2, even though it has some significant additions over 3.1, I really doubt 4.0 is gonna be around any time soon.

Yes and no. If anything, 4.0 will simply add more APIs to what is already there. Some might be deprecated, but any work you do now will not suddenly be rendered useless when 4.0 comes out.

A version number is just a number. It doesn't mean everything prior to it no longer works. Many of the APIs in the 3.0 SDK are prefaced with "Available in iPhone OS 2.0 or later."

Has that always been there?

In the "SDK" Logo in the first post, look closely under the "K". There is an icon for XCode and an icon for Interface Builder. Has that always been in the "SDK" logo?

It would be awesome, but I can't imagine Apple can reasonably put XCode on the iPad!?! But every other icon in that SDK logo is an iPhone App icon. It seems out of place that the XCode an IB icons are there.

The title of the news is confusing. It should read "iPhone SDK for the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad". The SDK always comes with a newer version of XCode.

Great! Now give us some new MBPs to try the new SDK on!

i'm actually begining to get the very distict feeling that the MBP is of literally zero priority to apple as it is becoming clearer and clearer that their quest to battle with nintendo and sony in the hand held gaming market with the ipad is a HUGE deal in cupertino.

Hopefully there will be further evidence of the iPad dashboard. I wish I could download the SDK and look through it for myself. Can't a Dev add me to their testing device list and I can download a copy? Or is it available on torrents, and if so, does it require any sort of activation?

Removed?

Is it just me, or did Apple remove the listing for the beta 3? When I go to the page, I only see beta 2.

Beta 3 gone

It seems that Apple just pulled the Beta 3 SDK. I was reading the release notes and then when I went to download it, it was back to Beta 2. Sigh.

Best first comment ever! (given the looming new MBP release)

I'd be a whole lot happier about the iPad if they would just release the new MBPs. Right now I sick of hearing iPad news. Release the new MacBook Pros!!

You realize it's a lot easier to rev a developer software package than it is to rev a piece of major consumer/professional computer hardware, right? iPad articles will always be more frequent by their nature.
