I think the common understanding is the iPad will come w/ OS 3.2 in March & 4.0 will be released at WWDC in June/July with new iPhones. As of yet, Apple hasn't released radically different UIs for the OS at all; pretty much the same since 1.0 from what I can tell. A few small changes, but not many. However, I'm more of a "Let's wait & see" kind of guy.

But they do typically introduce the new OS in March and release at WWDC. That gives developers time to gear up. Wait and see is probably the the right approach. I just want it all now!

i'm actually begining to get the very distict feeling that the MBP is of literally zero priority to apple as it is becoming clearer and clearer that their quest to battle with nintendo and sony in the hand held gaming market with the ipad is a HUGE deal in cupertino.

Seriously? Do you honestly believe that Apple is not working on an update to their MacBook Pro line right now? For that matter, are you really trying to convince us that Apple is abandoning the products that generate the largest percentage of their revenue?

Camera tab is for the SD card accessory (?)

isn't the camera tab for the SD card accessory? It would certainly make sense since you take the pics with your cam and then transfer the pics to your iPad.

This doesn't mean that the iPad will have a camera (which is what I think most people are thinking about right now).

Admittedly hadn't thought of that, but it makes a ton of sense. I'm with Twenty5!

Get over it

I'd be a whole lot happier about the iPad if they would just release the new MBPs. Right now I sick of hearing iPad news. Release the new MacBook Pros!!

You may be sick of hearing about the iPad.

Some of the rest of us are sick of impatient people whinging about MBPs in iPad threads.

Think about it:

iPad = New product
= excitement, anticipation, lots of threads

MBP update = slightly improved existing fine product
= no noticeable improvement over last year's model for 99% of users

And by the way, as others have mentioned, the new MBPs are not actually running behind their regular refresh schedule.

Patience!

When the iPhone push was happening Jobs admitted that it had slowed down other projects because of the resources they pulled to get the iPhone done.

Cook is AWESOME!!!!

Of course we all love Steve Jobs, but let us NEVER underestimate the power and brilliance of Tim Cook!!! This interview was a great take!!

They specifically said "OS X" and not just other projects, which makes a lot of sense as iPhone OS is based on OSX.

I don't see how you'd need a new OSX for a MBP hardware spec update.

iPad 3GSx4: New Tablet Computer Revealed at 2nd Cupertino Media Event

Cupertino has heard the complaints of those requesting their iPads earlier and today introduced yet another version of the iPad, dubbed the iPad 3GSx4, which will begin shipping at the end of this week. The photo above, taken from journalists at www.macrumors.com, depicts Jobs demonstrating the amazing, great, beautiful, great and sleek device at today’s media event.

Jobs went so far in today’s presentation to give a list of new features the 3GSx4 iPads would boast, a list which included, among others, the oft-discussed ability to multitask. While, at present, this is only an unconfirmed rumor, the new units are said to be able to run up to a total of four applications simultaneously… if proven to be accurate, this would certainly go a long way towards appeasing those requesting this feature.

Also announced today was a whole new line of accessories for the new iPads including the chrome colored tape product shown in the picture above. This accessory is considered to be a way of “personalizing” your device, while at the same time accenting the beautiful aluminum bezel of Apple’s latest offering.

Our first impressions are very positive… we really like the addition of four physical buttons to the 3GSx4, as well as the independent cameras, headphone jacks, charging ports, volume controls, mute switches, and screens, but we have decided to hold out final judgement until we get one of these coveted beauties on the benchtop for testing…

Notably missing is copy and paste between applications. :p

Because iPhone development used people from the OS X team.

Is that the case here?

Apple has shown before that they run pretty thin on resources. The iPad is a new hardware platform that they have a lot riding on. MBP is new hardware. If you're short resources and need more hardware guys where are they going to come from? Either they pulled them from the iPhone (unlikely since that's their current baby) or they pulled them from computer development. The odds are they hired some and then pulled some from both the iPhone and computer hardware teams.

It's just the nature of adding another brand new product to your lineup.

It does seem as you describe!!!!

Isn't this a bit frustrating for developers? I'm no programmer, but isn't it very likely that apple will release a relatively large 4.0 update with new APIs, basically making this a silly interim step to serve iPad owners between now and then?
When the IPhone SDK first came out in Beta I got on board. It was a very frustrating experience for somebody that wanted to do something part time. So I'm not event trying to get involved in this Beta, as you note this situation is even worst because it is pretty obvious that iPhone 4.0 will be a major update.
If I were a programmer, I wouldn't do anything until June. I would lose the initial rush, but I can't believe that that would be worse than quickly making a version of an app that will likely soon be out of date.

June at the least, even if IPhone 4.0 doesn't come out then. At best the only thing I would do with iPhone OS on iPad right now is to learn what is new. As far as trying to build apps for launch that is out of the question.

As to developer that are on the bandwagon at launch, yeah it can mean a lot of money. A wind fall in may ways and probably worth it to certain developers.

Correct. For a company of its size, Apple does not have a lot of resources.

The revenue per employee for Apple is very high compared to other hardware manufacturers. One of the big reasons why Apple is sitting on a humongous pile of cash is that their payroll is small.

Apple could stand to hire a few more people to take the heat off of their existing teams, which is why they are trying to staff an iPhone OS new platform bring-up team. They are poaching too many engineers from other groups for temporary reassignment to whatever is being launched.
