LOL are you kidding? I think most Americans who know anything about cellphones have heard of Nokia, I think all of our carriers sell Nokia?

And, uh, hate to break it to you, but the USA is still the largest economy on the planet, by a good margin -- there is no other market that is more "lucrative." Sorry!

I agree, as an American. But what that is also killing our economy and making the other industrialized nations rich. We consume just about everything, and most of the time the consumers don't have the money to even do that.

America imports far more goods than it exports, so we are the biggest spenders, but we don't necessarily make the most money.

People missing a huge part of today's news

The $100 Million venture fund from Kleiner/Perkins et al. is a huge part of today's announcement, they are one of the biggest and most prominent technology venture capital firms out there, and they feel this is a whole new computing platform (unique from Symbian and all that stuff) that is worth investing $100 Million in, because it's going to grow tremendously. Not mobile computing/communications in general, but specifically the iPhone/iPod Touch market. These are not dummies, and they would not throw $100 Million at a platform they don't feel is going to be absolutely DOMINATING the competition in another few years. These guys see the iPhone being the next iPod for Apple, and that is big -- because if Apple sells as many or more iPhones as they do iPods, they are going to be a MUCH bigger and more powerful company than they are today.

For the record, all of today's news was about as good as it could have possibly been, and I think anyone on here who is older than 18 and actually knows a thing or two about business, technology, and software development agree on that. ALl of the 15 year olds who hang out on this BBS and have nothing better to do are whining, because they don't even know what an SDK is. Doesn't matter, those are the same whiny 15 year olds who will be buying this software in droves in another few months.

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but at least it's on topic.....

Given the current state of iPhone hardware, could a skilled developer create a program, using the SDK, that would allow for sending pictures in text messages?

Thanks!

Great. Have fun. Here's a link you might find helpful.....

first of all only d-bags post stupid links that go no where, second of all, huh? how is it harder you put in a cd then click install, oh my gosh that's so hard! geez plus with ubuntu you get an easy way to get free software an easy way to upgrade for free, and you can customize your desktop (steve jobs has some serious control issues) plus as far as eye candy compiz beats anything. Also if I want to open up my OS as a learning experience it is much easier.

Can't wait

So I'm not a developer/programmer, so I won't be able to play around with any new apps for my iPhone until June - I can live with that. What I want to know is that since all you developers are getting the SDK today, how soon will we get to see the types of apps you are developing? Will we start seeing as soon as this week or next the awesome stuff that is being developed (understandably in youtube videos or screenshots and the like)? If this is the case, I have a feeling people will just be salivating and dying for the June release. It is going to be unbelievable. Is it just me or is this just going to make the iPhone (which was already the most amazing consumer electronics device ever) the greatest must-have gadget of all time! Even greater than the iPod. Is there anyone out there that is even thinking about getting a blackberry, treo, nokia, or palm device when you can do so much more on an iPhone? Maybe I am overly excited as I bought my iPhone the day they came out, but I REALLY can't imagine life without my iPhone - if you made me choose between losing my Macbook Pro or my iPhone, I would definitely choose to keep the iPhone. Sorry for gushing, but I just think today's announcements were unbelievable and really can't wait to see all the great apps that will be developed over the next few weeks/months.

The only thing I don't like today is the fact that Apple is monopolizing the software distribution channel. And let me tell you, I don't like it at all.

Apple presumably will decide if an app is "good enough" to be included in the store. I worry that they may not see the value in certain applications that may have a lot of merit for certain individuals. How often can I update the app that I write? Do I pay $99 each time? Can I have them host a new release every two weeks? Can I have them host a beta for my customers?

Second, they've misjudged the situation with internal apps developed by companies. I've worked on software development teams for some pretty large companies like Bank of America that do tons of in house development. It simply won't fly for them to use the iTMS as a distribution mechanism. Not unless a private iTMS node can exist inside their corporate firewall. Large companies who spend millions of dollars on internal apps aren't going to then ship the apps across the Internet and have Apple control the distribution.

I really think we should have the option of hosting some sort of install archive on our own servers and someone just downloads it and installs it. The precedent Apple is setting could eventually lead to a similar approach to all software for Apple computers. If you want to write an application for OS X, Apple has to approve it, host it, and sell it. Some people may think this is great, but to me it sounds like any Apple product in the future is going to be completely subordinated to Steve Jobs.

So much for open source and their BSD roots. After making their billions by layering on top of these concepts, now they're just taking a big crap on it all.

You can only develop Symbian apps on the Windows platform (so no cross-platform SDK stuff there)
Eclipse (the premier java development toolset) is written in Java, as are all the other ones I can think of so you are developing Java apps on a Java Platform (which includes a full Virtual Machine as Java is not native).

The iPhone "platform" is Cocoa and Objective-C, and XCode is written in Objective-C on top of Cocoa. To move the whole environment across to windows would require an implementation of Cocoa on Windows which would be a far from trivial task and would be roughly equivalent to the WINE project (and look how long that's taken so far!)
I mentioned Symbian development because I wanted to show the platform you are developing on doesn't have anything to do with the platform you are developing for. Symbian is very different from any of the desktop PC platforms, so creating a SDK that runs on windows could IMHO be comparable to making an iphone sdk for windows.

The fact that Eclipse is written in Java has absolutely nothing to do with the fact you can develop Java apps in it. You can write C apps and practically anything else in Eclipse, it's just a really powerful IDE. The JVM, compilers and other stuff that runs in the background is developed seperately, has multiplatform support and doesn't have anything to do with Eclipse, so you're wrong in saying that by using eclipse you're developing Java apps in a Java environment.

The fact that Java isn't completely native isn't as bad as you're trying to make it sound. They still have to work really hard to provide multiplatform compatibility so i think their work is a very good sign that it can be done.

As I said before, have fun with it and yes.....it will be a learning "experience." LOL

They are well aware of this and have stated they're working on an enterprise solution to this.

I hope all those hackers out there get to work and hack the sdk so we can use voip on cell networks... Im sure it'll happen in time.

No iPhone 2.0 until LATE JUNE! I thought that they would release something for their customers today! This officially sucks!

No it doesn't! The announcements today was fabulous! Devs get the SDK today not in june! They already said today was for the devs. June will be for the crybabies and those who were patient.
Its going to take a couple months for all the talent out there to chew on the SDK and come out with some incredible apps. Plus June we'll definately be seeing the iphone 3G and whatever else Jobs wants to surprise us with!

Well...it wasn't what I expected. No sling media. No app store till June. Yea, they should of just waited until wwdc.

Waited for what?? Yeah so in June the devs would get the beta SDK and ANOTHER few months til we see some decent apps? No thank you.
The devs get the kit today so by WWDC we'll be seeing a lot of cool apps plus new hardware. Geez.

how to download IPHONE sdk

go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone/do...iphone_sdk.dmg
if it doesn't work login and click download iphone sdk, an email will be sent to your email account, click on the link and try to get through the net traffic. If all goes well you will be downloading the SDK, if not you probably have a screen in front of you that says theres and error or something like that. No worries, just go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone/do...iphone_sdk.dmg again and it should work this time.

*** AN EASY WAY TO GET AROUND THE NET TRAFFIC IS TO REFRESH THE SITE CONSTANTLY. CLICK REFRESH AND WAIT UNTIL IT COMES BACK WITH AN ERROR AND THEN CLICK IT AGAIN, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PRESS IT VERY QUICKLY BUT YOU WILL GET THROUGH, YOU'LL KNOW ITS WORKED ONCE YOUVE CLICK REFRESH AND IT DOESNT SHOW AN ERROR, BE PATIENT IT WILL LOAD. ALSO IF A PAGE LOADS WITH NO PICTURES JUST CLICK THE BACK BUTTON AND CLICK THE LINK AGAIN IF THE PAGE LOADS, IF NOT JUST REFRESH, REFRESH, REFRESH.

So basically devs have to sit around with their apps for 3 months (or from the time they finish it to "late-June")?

Maybe for the jailbroken apps. But some legit companies (big ones and little guys who want to actually write a decent app) are going to take their time, starting from scratch and write some outstanding applications.

Why do people suddenly think that a 3G phone will be out in June? Steve said there would be one in late 2008 and June isn't late in the year.

LOL are you kidding? I think most Americans who know anything about cellphones have heard of Nokia, I think all of our carriers sell Nokia?

See, but I know Nokia's global market share is over 40% yet their sales in the US were down about 23% in the US during 2007. I also know a lot of that's down to carrier agreements, lack of competitive handsets and Nokia's general unwillingness to adapt to the US market's idiosyncrasies.

On the other hand you use 'txt sp33k' and clearly don't know what you're talking about.

And, uh, hate to break it to you, but the USA is still the largest economy on the planet, by a good margin -- there is no other market that is more "lucrative." Sorry!

And, uh, I hate to break it to you but we're talking about mobile phone markets. Sit down and learn:

In Q3 2007 289 million mobile phones were sold. The breakdown was:

Asia Pacific: 101.8m
Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa: 49.6m
Western Europe: 47m
North America: 45m

The rest is accounted for by other regions. So, just in case you missed it, the US is actually the fourth - I thought it was the third - largest mobile phone market by sales volume.

Nobody is arguing that the US is the world's largest economy - about 3 times the size of the next biggest (Japan) - but that's not what we were discussing, was it? In saying that, the European Union's economy is actually bigger but since that's a loose economic confederation I'll let you off.

Pay more attention. It'll stop you looking silly.

Don't just hang out at macrumors for your apple news.

Go to appleinsider, macdailynews, looprumors, 9to5mac, alleyinsider, engadget, gizmodo, maclife, and sometimes but rarely do I go to fortune and forbes. There are a few other sources but analying a lot of articles from industry experts you start to see patterns where they are agreeing with each other.
From articles talking about 3G rollouts to financial reports to component availability more than likely Apple will HAVE to launch the 3G iphone by June's WWDC 08 or even sooner.

Will someone develop a PDF reader please!:D
And some form of ereader.:)
Adobe should be entirely capable of creating BOTH "Flash Player" and "Acrobat Reader" for iPhone. The only challenge with Flashplayer, is that Adobe would need to BEG Apple to take the SWF MIME type and make it "auto-launch" the stand-alone Flash player from the browser.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS ANNOUNCEMENT.

I'm puzzled by all the whining. It's like Jobs could come out and announce it'll be raining money tomorrow, and people would complain that it'll hurt their heads.

Safari does open pdf's on iPhone !
I guess you are talking about a stand alone Acrobat App.

And Touch owners are getting screwed again since they will have to pay for the update!

That sucks.

well that definitely puts my touch purchase on hold until June, we still don't have a iTunes store in Singapore and so you CAN'T update the apps even if you want to pay. They really need to sort that out.

I never thought of that, but this is a bum deal for you guys- sorry to hear it. This will continue to be a problem until iTMS is ubiquitous across the globe, in all countries.
