Interesting - when I tried the "upgrade my library" it did NOT find all the upgradable music. It's only offering to upgrade one of my two Norah Jones albums, for instance - even though both are on iTunes Plus, and both were purchased through ITMS.

The iTunes FAQ is down as well, so I can't look for a solution. Guess I'll have to wait a while until the first wave dies down...

Really? How did they get equipment? Did they steal the microphones, cables, mixing boards, computers, etc.? Or maybe you can make a song for 99¢ if your cousin owns a recording studio and he owes you some big favors?

No, no... they have to start with what they already own (computer mic, etc) and are only allowed to spend 99 c in 24 hr

oh wow, music upgraded via iT+ keeps all of the "last played" ID3 tags. That's impressive

I agree. Everything about it, from the explanations to the offer to move your existing DRM files to the desktop is well thought out. Excellent UX

Now kids, don't go uploading your new music on to p2p, because your account information is still stored in the tracks.
There's another reason. It's a violation of the license terms you agree to when you use the iTunes Store.

The Usage section from the U.S. Terms of Service says:
Use of Products. You acknowledge that Products (other than the iTunes Plus Products) contain security technology that limits your usage of Products to the following Usage Rules, and, whether or not Products are limited by security technology, you agree to use Products in compliance with the applicable Usage Rules.

Usage Rules

iTunes Plus Products do not contain security technology that limits your usage of such Products, and Usage Rules (iii) – (vi) do not apply to iTunes Plus Products. You may copy, store and burn iTunes Plus Products as reasonably necessary for personal, noncommercial use.
Therefore, the following rules still apply to DRM-free music:
(i) Your use of the Products is conditioned upon your prior acceptance of the terms of this Agreement.

(ii) You shall be authorized to use the Products only for personal, noncommercial use.

(vii) You shall be entitled to export, burn (if applicable) or copy Products solely for personal, noncommercial use.

(viii) You may not use Products as a musical "ringer" in connection with phone calls.

(ix) Any burning (if applicable) or exporting capabilities are solely an accommodation to you and shall not constitute a grant or waiver (or other limitation or implication) of any rights of the copyright owners in any audio or video content, sound recording, underlying musical composition, or artwork embodied in any Product.

(x) You agree that you will not attempt to, or encourage or assist any other person to, circumvent or modify any security technology or software that is part of the Service or used to administer the Usage Rules.

(xi) The delivery of Products does not transfer to you any commercial or promotional use rights in the Products.
The following rules do not apply to DRM-free music:
(iii) You shall be authorized to use the Products on five Apple-authorized devices at any time.

(iv) You shall be able to store Products from up to five different Accounts on certain devices, such as an iPod, at a time.

(v) You shall be authorised to burn an audio playlist up to seven times.

(vi) You shall not be entitled to burn Video Products.
In other words, with their DRM-free music you have permission to make as many personal copies as you like and no limits on burning a playlist, but distribution is still a license violation even though it's no longer enforced by the software.

Until I read the details, I wasn't sure whether the removal of DRM also meant the removal of voluntary/honor-system limits of the numbers of copies. Now we know that those limitations do not apply at all, as long as all copies are for personal use.

servers seem better now in NE

Just downloaded Amos Lee's "Supply and Demand" and it was much better now with batches of three songs going through in seconds and the album being done in about a minute.

How can you beat that? Sounds great and not even shipping charges or a run to the store all for less than $10. :p

Really glad I waited for this to go into effect but was surprised that Blue Note has artists in the mix. Don't think they are part of EMI.

On my iBook, 7.2 actually broke iTunes. At first it was just the Music Store that was acting strange (no songs showed up in the window), but now I've realized that my music library, cds, podcasts, radio, etc all fail to work. When you click them nothing happens. No libraries, radio stations, podcasts: nothing is listed, just blank white windows.

I've never had a problem with an iTune update before this one. Anyone else having this problem?

I had an iTunes crash after purchasing the Eurovision song contest CD (42 DRM-free CD quality songs for €12, who could resist that?) The worst thing was that my library file was gone:eek:
So after an initial panic attack, reboot etc. I managed to import the xml file into a new library, so I could retain most metadata and playlists. Although play/skip counts, video category (movie, TV or music) and some other random stuff are all gone.

My advise to everyone is backing up their library files before installing.

and of course I also get a lot 405 (or is it 504) errors when downloading. These are probably just side-effects of it being released today (a lot of people are probably upgrading)

I believe the Apple support site attributes that number to a server timeout

I had the same exact problem. What I did was go to Apple.com and download iTunes and reinstall it that way. I think it had something to do with UNO being installed but I'm not sure. After reinstalling iTunes, it works perfectly now.

Eurovision song contest CD. Seriously? Eurovision song? What the hell was the Ukrainian entry about, and don't get me started on the UK one, yuk :(

If you have a code for a free tune, does it work for either a DRM tune or a more-expensive DRM-free tune?

I don't have any unused codes at the moment, so I can't check this myself. Just curious.

Nope, I tried ;) Instead of saying my song credits would be deducted, it said that my credit card would be charged. IIRC, when I got the free codes, it specified that the code could only be used on a $.99 track.

I saw the little plus sign next to the song, and thought you could just upgrade one at a time, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Try moving the songs you want to upgrade to a new iTunes Library. I can't confirm yet, but it's offering me to upgrade 2 songs in this library - the other purchases are all in a different library.

Yep their servers are getting slammed. The downloads started out fast but now they are very slow. And mass time outs.

Oh, boy, the Upgrade your Songs button thingy just disappeared here as I was trying to retry.
Edit: it came back just now. Server still times out.

I think the police just broke up the party. Hmm, I should go check if they have The Police songs.

Edit: nope, The Police are DRM'ed.

That got it all worked out, thanks for the tip!

Has anyone else noticed that some music is no longer available on the store at all? Last night I was looking at a band called "Carbon based life forms" and was going to check back today to see if I could purchase some of their stuff from iTunes plus, but they aren't on the store at all anymore...

I now see iTunes Plus content when I search for some artists. However, $1.39 a track, here in Canada. I don't understand how we can pay $0.99 for regular tracks, just like the U.S. but have to pay a higher rate for the DRM free tracks, compared to the U.S. Correct me if i'm wrong, but it *is* $1.29 state-side, correct?

Wowza, I just jumped on to the Canadian store and wow. We really are getting shafted up here in Canada. I am sorry but if we pay the same 99¢ as in the states for regular DRM songs then they should be sucking it up and charging us exactly the same amount. $1.39 is in my opinion a rip off for just a single song, even if it is DRM free and 256kb/s.

Iggy :(

wtf? i have to pay $3 to upgrade my full albums, even tho they are still only /9.99 that is stupid.

They're still the same price without the extra quality and DRM free goodness...they're more expensive with what you get from the update...

Click the details button and then scroll to the bottom. There you can update any individuals songs that you have purchased.

Got a problem here:

when I click on one of the songs it asks me in a new window to turn on iPlus.
(although I already turned it on in my iTunes account)

After turning it on on this page, I get an error.

Doesn't work

So my question:
1) how do I solve this
2) how do I update an album?

Cause me and my Dad we share one account (his VISA) but I'm only upgrading my music, not his.

thanks

Only had one song to get; Fatboy Slim's Wonderful Night =)

That's odd... I purchased that track (one of a very few tracks while iTunes had DRM) a long time ago, and it shows up in my 'Purchased' playlist, however the iTunes plus page says I have no tracks to upgrade.

I'm sure Apple are maybe still rolling this out, iTunes definitely seems a little flakey tonight :(

this is confusing. one of my albums, fischerspooner i paid 9.99 for, it is still for sale as + for 9.99, but they want me to pay another $3 to upgrade it to the current + quality.

what is stranger is that they have singles that are on +. If you click buy album, it is .99, but if you click buy the song (the only song on there) it is $1.29
