ummm... edu pricing?

Can someone help me out with the academic pricing issue?
When I go to the educational store, there's nothing.
I called a guy at Apple, and he couldn't find it for a while.
Then when he did find it through some backwards way, he gave me the $449 price.
Where exactly are you finding these cheaper prices? Aside from the Tigertech one. :)
Who exactly did you call to get the $179 price (for the full Studio version) from Apple? Was it a physical store?
Thanks!

P.S. I'm a student at UW-Whitewater, so I'm not trying to cheat or anything!

Sometimes your school bookstore will have lower prices than the Apple Store directly. For example, I purchased Logic Pro 7 from my school bookstore for $299 (edu), where if I went to the Apple Store it would have been $499.

this sucks, I got fed up of waiting for logic 8, so i bought cubase 4 last week!

I am willing to sell cubase for logic 8 if you can tell me one thing...

i squence alot of drums in cubase, and i use the drum map to input my own beats. can i do this in logic? I have tried in the past and could not find anything to do with a drum map in logic?

any1 know?

cheers, Joel.

There's a MIDI editor that I use to map out beats. There's also Ultrabeat, which has a step-sequencer, so it's basically a softsynth drum machine. Although I don't use it much, it's really powerful -- you can load samples onto different voices or synthesize your own drum or synth sounds. You can also direct the plugin to different tracks and mix onboard the plugin, so it's pretty integrated.

Already my Favorite Mac Apps Ever

Ordered and overnighted.

Flashback to the SATs
Logic Pro 8 is to Logic Pro 7 as Leopard is to Windows 95.

I recently got disillusioned with LP7 and started mainly using Garageband '08, which I love but doesn't support my control surface/interface. These apps make me want to make music again.

Also, I've always hated that Ableton Live really had a monopoly on live-performance apps, though I love Live. The jury is still out on Mainstage, but if it lives up to the previews, I've found my new killer app.

Though there isn't a true loop system like in Live, one could simply beat map out drum beats or bass lines and trigger them in tempo with a midi instrument right?

You get a free upgrade.

The only bright spot, but that is standard for most upgrades. If I would have waited five days (haven't even really used the software yet), then I wouldn't have needed the upgrade.

This is worse than the iPhone as everyone expects cell phone prices to drop after introduction. I'm not sure anyone thought Logic 8 would be this price. But, because there are only a small number of us affected (recent Logic 7.2 buyers), somehow I don't think we will get Apple's ear.

For me there is really not an upside. I paid $500 more than the market does now. It's spilt milk and water under the bridge. Nothing I can do about it, so I will just move forward.

Anyone have Steve Jobs' personal email address?

Wow. Totally not expecting this, as it is days after the new ipod release. Then again, the ipod releases don't have too much to do with this.

Damn cool though, and it looks like they are stepping directly on Ableton's shoes. They are gonna be pissed :p

Are the specs given on the site the specs that will be in the final product? Are you sure this time, Apple?
Take snapshots of the specs gentlemen! Who knows they delete some 'editing' features on the specs page within the next days.
Like they did with the Touch.

I disagree. Logic Pro 8 is not really such a large step up from Logic 7. As you can see from the list of changes:
-New UI (it's not that different actually...)
-Templates? Whatever...I've already made all my templates
-Multitake recording (lifted from Digital Performer, I'm very glad to finally have it in Logic)
-Quick Swipe comping (okay, this really is cool, but it's the first significant change yet listed)
-Audio editing (beat snapping is good...it's catching up to ProTools, but ProTools audio really is a dream to work with. Logic still has a ways to go...)
-Surround? I thought we already had that in 7...
-No XS key. Not that big of a deal, just easier for the pirates to crack.

As you can see from the above list, this really is closer to a Logic 7.5 than an 8. There are no new instruments, and only a couple new effects (Delay Designer looks sweet!). It's yet to be seen how many new EXS instruments are included.

I still bought it because I've been waiting to upgrade from 7 Express for a long time, and I'm hoping that Mainstage will be a worthy replacement for Ableton Live (Live's routing and performance capabilities are limited when it comes to complex MIDI manipulation).

This is a worthy upgrade and the price reduction is fantastic! But spare yourself the hyperbole, this is a good upgrade, but it is no Win95 -> OS X 10.5 ;)

If I dealt with loops in live performance, I'd either stick with Ableton Live or perhaps load samples into Ultrabeat (or iDrum or what-have-you) to have them looped and triggered.

Apple seems to using Babya Logic 3 style features now in Logic Studio-like a single window interface.

Just as easy to use as my Logic for Windows.

That makes me happy.
Though a general purpose synth like our StarrySynth and ES10 hasn't been added.

Also MainStage is a pro Magic garageband with a different focus.

Not really, Ableton is still a totally different program. Mainstage looks more like a workstation competitor (a la Motif/Triton/Fantom). Live's big thing is Session View with realtime manipulation of loops and timestretching.

For what I use Ableton Live for, I believe Mainstage will be a replacement.

I don't trigger loops, I just use Live as a low-latency host for a few soft synths with multiple MIDI controllers (Korg K61, Edirol M30, Behringer FCB1010) to control effects and tap tempo, etc. This looks like the perfect live performance tool for what I want. By the looks of the demo videos, the MIDI and audio routing will be very customizable and deep, which is exactly what I've been needing for some time!

Plus being able to use EVP88 and EVB3 instead of Lounge Lizard and NI's B4 in a live setting will rule! (That said, I'm quite fond of B4, but EVP88 is definitely a step up from Lounge Lizard)

trouble

New and improved ways to for me to live under the delusion that I have musical ability! :) Pretty cool, nonetheless. Even for an observer.

Are you kidding???

yay, now GO UPDATE THE MAC PRO ALREADY.

Although i am a FCS user and not a musician, I can feel the pain when suddently Apple abandoned us, the pros (their core customers from day 1) and choose to support the teeny boopers with their ipods, iphone, icar, itoaster, iradio.

Is an 8-core 3GHz workstation with up to 16GB RAM, 4 internal SATA drives, fibre channel, internal RAID card, etc. etc. etc. not enough for Logic? Give me a break. It's hard to hit the ceiling with Logic with a dual G5.

I've taken a brief read over the web page (have yet to delve into the PDF of changes) but it really doesn't look like Logic 8 is that much. The UI looks pretty much the same, although a bit prettier, and all the plugins are the same. The biggest change for me will be not using the XSKey (I found myself using GarageBand more -- unlike some people I do a lot of work at a Library or coffee house). The price drop is welcomed, of course.

I use Ableton Live to DJ, so... heh, wouldn't be using Mainstage for that~
