All installed with no dramas - is it me or does it appear that things are going a lot smoother at Apple now that they have an engineer running the company? it seems that Apple are focusing a lot more on fixing the issues rather than the usual dance of denial, then claims of investigation then suddenly a mysterious update being pushed out at the wee hours of the morning (well, at least where I live) without anyone noticing.

Here's the message I get on my MBPro 15" model 8,2 (late 2011)

Message I get when attempting to run the firmware update on a 2008 MacBook Pro: "ALERT: This software is not supported on your system."

So maybe not for *all* Intel-based MacBook Pro's?

From the package

MacBookPro8,1','MacBookPro8,2','MacBookPro8,3

Code:
function InstallationCheck(prefix) {
	var models = ['MacBookPro8,1','MacBookPro8,2','MacBookPro8,3',];
....

So, that's all 2011 MacBook Pro models (all sizes)[/QUOTE]

I got the same message as NY Guitarist above, but I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15". However, longofest above indicates that the upgrade should be for all 2011 MBO's.

I'm confused - why do I get a message saying the upgrade is not supported on my system??:confused:

Edit: I get the same screen as in Post# 27.

Same with me. "This software is not supported on your system". Late 2011 15" MBP (2.4Ghz).

Perfectly plausible for Apple to start merging the SMC firmware somewhere in the assembly of the late-2011 MacBook's just as not every iMac 2011 model has the same GPU firmware since modifications for issues that have arisen can be merged in newer shipping models. Samsung does it with their boatloader for example where firmware updates are applied to newer assembled products.

If it says that it can't be applied then you don't require it since you've already got that update already.

Software Update shows the update for me:

Before installation, the warning:

Before installation my SMC version was 1.69f1

Now the SMC version is 1.69f3

I have an early 2011 MBP 15" - do you think what you said above applies to my computer, too?

(I'm looking for reassurance. Such a insecure little baby I am:eek:)

Edit: Just saw Post# 34. I think I already downloaded the SMC update as above.

Edit 2: I have same SMC numbers as Post# 34 above :D

If you've downloaded it (via the Apple website), ran it and it comes back saying you don't need it then it is highly likely that you don't need to apply it. The 'Software Update' can be a hit and miss at times but if you've already downloaded it from the website etc. but it comes back saying you don't need it then it is highly likely you don't.

Just installed the update. Man the fan was loud! And it was on mt early 2011 macbook pro! Well i never had the problem before but I just wanted to install the update just to be safe.

Cool. Now fix the Sata III optical bay so it'll work like the 13" models.
Co%k wads.

I'd get a quad i7 in a second if i knew i'd be able to get 1gb/s write speeds.

Future proofish or no purchase.

Guys,

I only posted a portion of the script - the portion that specified what models were supported. You need to make sure you're running at least 10.6.8 or 10.7.2 in order to install the update. You'll get those messages if you aren't up to date with at least one of those OSs.

I wish they'd stop selling defective batteries for 2007 Macbook Pros while they're at it. I've had three fail now. It's outrageous.

Too bad this firmware update doesn't work with a mid 2010 macbook pro model. I got mine in April of 2010, and I've been experiencing the random shut downs sometime after I upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard back in July. Sometimes It'll be fine for a week or two, then randomly shut down, or it might do it several times in one day, then that's it for a week or two.

I have a late 2011 MBP 17", 2.5GHz, and the update is not for me. My SMC version is 1.70f5.

how does this firmware address the issue? instead of taking power from battery under full load where does the cpu get the additional power from now?

i have this issue with my MBP while using log and transfer or when I'm encoding files.
