how does this firmware address the issue? instead of taking power from battery under full load where does the cpu get the additional power from now?

i have this issue with my MBP while using log and transfer or when I'm encoding files.

It is probably too much heat. Try to disable the discrete graphics card with gfxCardStatus. The discrete graphics card produces additional heat.

Odd. I've never encountered this issue, and my core i7 in my Macbook has worked itself to the bone in the past. Oh well, doesn't hurt to install the update anyway.

2011 early 15" MBP here. Did this update for mine. Fan was loud as shizzz but it went through.

If you've downloaded it (via the Apple website), ran it and it comes back saying you don't need it then it is highly likely that you don't need to apply it. The 'Software Update' can be a hit and miss at times but if you've already downloaded it from the website etc. but it comes back saying you don't need it then it is highly likely you don't.

Thanks, MrNomNoms, for reassuring the big baby!:D

If you're not already a parent, you'll be a good one. You've had the opportunity to practice on a 66 year old baby!!:D:p

it's like the machine works at 90W. at full charge, the battery will still be empty after 6 hours of heavy work when also connected to mains. this firmware probably tweaks down the CPU so the machine match the 85W of the charger.
or at least i do hope it doesn't tweak down the GPU or force to integrated graphics.
in that case i would return the machine!
anyone who knows?

Early 2011, 15" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,2)

That explains it. I'm already on that SMC version from the factory. Ordered the laptop on announcement date.

Yes, I got the loud fan noise when my update went through and then all good.

(MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011)

My MacBook Pro seems to be running faster now.......nice.:D

That's exactly what my concern is. I'm going to hold off updating till I know for sure. If this firmware does knock down the CPU or GPU that's BS

I've never had this issue with my MacBook Pro (8,1). I encode videos for hours, which uses as much processing power as it can, and it has never shut down on me.

I checked today for this update and it doesn't show up. I checked in profiler and I have the revision listed. I have a late 2011 MBP 15".

I guess, like others, I got it from the factory or something.
