Did get the full installer downloaded (Sweden) on my MBP Late 2013 Retina, 12,20 GB. Also got a security update for Catalina, 2020-001 10.15.7 at the same time, 1,32 GB, for my current system.

I hope this is safe to install on this machine now... 😑 #nobrick

So interestingly this update seems to be doing its thing in the background while I use my Mac. anybody know how long it will take to apply once i actually say restart? should be faster than in the past by a long shot, no?
Talking to myself here but three reboots and about 10 minutes of unusable update computer time later (w 8 min still on the clock for this round) and I would say this is a minor improvement at best

Seems to be the new way that updates work. According to Apple:

Software Updates

Faster updates

Once macOS Big Sur is installed, software updates begin in the background and complete faster than before — so it’s easier than ever to keep your Mac up to date and secure.

A little scary to run it as it doesn't really say what it is installing! It is a 11GB download but says it will take 36MB on the computer.

How does this installer work and when do I see that I am installing Big Sur 11.1?
Agreed, what the heck did i install ??

And the update crashes my Mac on reboot

Big Sur has been a mess in this respect for me
My Mac is a even a clean build of Big Sur

it‘s getting that I am longing for windows ...

This pkg installer just moves the "Install macOS Big Sur.app" to your Applications folder.

It's pretty obvious. I said it was the full installer for Big Sur 11.1. So what do you think is going to happen? The full installer goes into your application folder. Nothing to be scared of - unless you are scared of Big Sur!

Rebooted. Download is starting over again but I still lost disk space.

I would leave it alone, it just seems like you're making the process a lot longer.

I started downloading the update around 1020 my time -

The download was fast but it took about 30 minutes to get from "15 minutes" to "10 minutes" and about 20 minutes to get to "5 minutes" and now it's about to install so just give it time.

No it froze. It did nothing for about 30 minutes at a full progress bar. Even restarting it froze so I rebooted and its downloading again but I lost about 5 GB of space.

For crying out loud…

I hit update on both IOS and MacOS. IOS completed download first (obviously), but then spent a long time "preparing" the update.

Then MacOS completed downloading 3.73 GB and started to "prepare" the same way.

Meanwhile, IOS was done "preparing", and so I hit install. BIG mistake, because then MacOS said the "download failed" since there was no internet connection.

Why do I need the internet connection AFTER the download is complete, and why can't it keep the frigging files cached, since MacOS just loves caching everything?

Redownloading 3.73 GB then… over 4G. Apple is the new Microsoft, the king of stupid software.

Wow this worked perfectly! It did take a lot longer than the 15 mins to prepare in Mac OS but ... the time spent at the Apple symbol was significantly reduced (I didn't exactly time it but it was <30 mins).

It was interesting that after hitting Install Now - it had to connect and download more update files? But they were fairly quick.

Weird that this is being complicated so much - but it definitely speeds things up when it works right.
