Apple Releases macOS Big Sur 11.1 With AirPods Max Support and Mac App Store Privacy Labels

The update sadly blew away my Desktop and Documents folder, as well as any app data stored in iCloud. Been trying to get it to restore and work again with no luck. May have to resort to a backup of everything.

I noticed that 11.1 (beta 2) included the following note:

  • Using either macOS Recovery or a bootable installer to reinstall macOS Big Sur 11.1 beta on Macs with Apple silicon is now supported. (71221267)

It's not listed in the final public notes, but does this mean you can erase and install on M1 without issue now?

Update has failed twice (your computer restarted because of a problem) on 2013 MacBook Air and 2016 MacBook Pro. I recommend waiting.

This update takes FOREVER on my MacBook Pro 2019. Already 1.5 hours past download and initiating the update and still not halfway there. Never seen this in 12 years of being a Mac customer.

Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.1, the first major update to the initial macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 operating system version that was released on November 12. macOS Big Sur 11.1 was released following four rounds of beta testing.

The new ‌macOS Big Sur 11.1‌ update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

There were no major new features discovered in the update during the beta testing period, but according to Apple's release notes, the new software adds support for AirPods Max, introduces a new Apple TV+ tab, macOS Big Sur is a major update that brings a full redesign to the Mac, along with new features designed for M1 Macs. Complete details on all of the new functionality in macOS Big Sur can be found in our roundup.

And I guess still no system wide Airplay2?

Don't download it. It bricked my monitor. Cannot display in full resolution (4k) now.

This has happened to me too (M1 Mac mini). It's as though iCloud is not properly loading. I've restarted, and I'm going to restart again, then try signing out and back into iCloud. My other Mac has been taken offline so that no sync happens.
Another strange thing I've noticed is that the Creation date for my HD is "1 Jan 2020 at 09:00".

So, this is strange and was worrying... but it's sorted now. Go to
System Preferences > AppleID > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options... >
I'll bet "Desktop & Documents Folders" has been unchecked.
I checked the box, then restarted, and after a few minutes all the files and folders appeared again.
Unfortunately they all had to be downloaded again to the machine.

So that's not a good preference to get automatically changed during an update...

Hopefully this update fixes the hard crashes that I've been experiencing in Big Sur. 12+ years of using OSX on at least 8 different Macs and I've never experienced this sort of thing.

edit... not worth the risk based on some of the comments... Software Update Canceled.

That was the same for me, too. Except Apple Support insisted I should copy the files over manually from a local "Archive" folder iCloud created when it was turned off. And now everything is screwed up with duplicates, things that weren't downloaded being overwritten in the cloud because the local version didn't have everything.

That sucks!
I can see that folder now in my ~/ user folder... lol. This is a bit of a **** up alright.

They must have improved Rosetta, because Firefox works now, even with Extensions.

Although the native M1 version will likely be released tomorrow, lol
