Post circa 1998: “Give us back the floppy drive and SCSI ports so that we don’t need hubs and dongles in the first place.”

USB-A and Thunderbolt 2 are ports of the past. The USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 connector can do literally everything that the old ports did, but with an industry standard connection.

Not too mention there are other uses for hubs (eg. docking stations) which wouldn’t be “solved” by adding in legacy ports.
Excellent. So what was ‘right’ a quarter century ago means it’s ‘right’ today.

What does this update do for iMacs? If nothing, why was it available. (Installing right now)

Happy to report that 11.2.2 fixes 4K monitor support via UCB-C cable. Yes!
I would love to think that this update fixes the 4K monitor support with USB-C cable — I was going to call Apple Support today from my call last weekend on my case as they said to get back in touch with them for an engineer to get on the call with me — so I’m going to run this update this morning and see what we get....I have the LG 32UL950 USB-C to USB-C TB3 connection— have sleep/wake issues and kernel panic issues...

Hmmmm. Just updated Mac Mini Late 2014 - with TWO hubs attached no problem. There's that. There must be some other stuff behind the door for other non-macbook users - like my Safari tabs weren't showing urls.

The real problem is, and please try not to take this as an offence as that’s not what I’m really doing here, but the real problem is you.

If every customer refused to buy out of date USB cables devices then within weeks the product creators would get with the program.

For example micro-USB was officially abolished in 2013 yet some companies are STILL releasing products with these abolished ports even this year. If nobody bought these, not one person, it would stop. And before someone thinks USB-C is magically expensive it’s simply not, IKEA have for years sold a wireless charger with USB-C for a mere €4.

Stop buying out of date tech and it will go away, don’t pay attention and much like horrible unreliable and officially abolished micro-USB companies will continue to sell the garbage.

Apple are not wrong here, they rarely are on this subject.
Could you provide a link regarding micro-USB being officially abolished in 2013? I thought only mini-USB was deprecated. I did try a search, but couldn’t find any reference to that and would appreciate a link for further information. Thanks!

11.2.2 had no effect on this issue — I’ll be calling Apple today, UGH!

I'm sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but.. my M1 MBP just got bricked this morning after updating to Big Sur 11.2.2 on Thursday. Again.

I got my M1 MBP last December. 3 weeks later, it bricked. Apple repaired it for me, I got it back earlier in Feb, chalked it up to some weird malfunction.
This morning it bricked again. In the same exact way. So this time I got curious and googled "M1 MBP bricked". That's how I found out that:
  1. This is a very common, well-known problem
  2. The culprit is the USB hub ($100 Satechi here)
  3. Any other brand of USB hub I'd heard of can brick an M1 MBP/MBA, with or without passthrough power (though more commonly with)
  4. Apple's own Multiport Adapter can also brick it (three reports I saw)
  5. The macOS update I installed on Thu should have fixed the problem (this thread)
  6. It obviously didn't
Mine could be the weird one-off exception and everyone else may be fine.
Or not.

Yeah no lol lay off the koolaid. Ports should be phased out. Not “surprise, your mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitors, printer, camera, and even iPhone can’t be connected to our computer without a bag of dongles. Oh yeah good luck if you trip over the power cable”. The number of people who support and defend boneheaded decisions is frightening

Idk about you all, but I recently purchased a MacBook Air M1, and I experienced the Bluetooth bug even after upgrading to 11.2.1. It wasn't until I downloaded the 11.2.2 update that it was finally fixed.

2019 16" Macbook Pro
Mac OS 11.2.1 messed with my 16 TB LaCie 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3.
Would dis-mount without the SD Card dis-mounting.
Thought it was a 2big Dock issue and then while transferring files to 8 TB LeCie D2 used for Time Machine ran into issues.
Now can't back up via Time Machine.
AppleCare support recommended upgrading to Mac OS 11.2.2 and still not working.
No BiG Spur 11.2.2 available for Recovery Install and can't re-install 11.2.1
Ahgggg ###...

How about for a 2019 MBP 16" that has a USB-A connected for accessibility use ONLY? This is my main computer I use and I don't have a backup. Please remember I'm disabled and may need assistance if something goes wrong. Thanks in advance.

P.S.: For those who've installed this already, did it start w/ a prompt to agree or disagree or no?

Still getting a Kernel Panic when reconnecting to my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro (FB9025184)...

Just for people's reference, if you want to force a refresh to check for a software update you can run:
Bash:
softwareupdate -l
In terminal.

This guy deserves 5000 more likes, the only useful comment in the first 2 pages :)

was this an issue with macOS Cataline too is what I wonder, so in order to fix the issue, do we need to upgrade to Big Sur now?

This update messed up use of my external HP Z27 4k monitor. It's also stuck at 30Hz (can't get 60hz and option click in display settings gives no refresh rate options). Also, the external display doesn't get detected half the time when plugging in the TB3 cable.

Anyone have similar issues?

Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.2.2, the fourth update to the macOS Big Sur operating system that launched in November. macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 comes two weeks after the release of macOS Big Sur 11.2.1, a bug fix update.

First-Look-Big-Sur-Feature2.jpg

The new ‌‌‌‌macOS Big Sur‌‌‌ 11.2.2‌ update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, the macOS Big Sur update prevents 2019 or later MacBook Pro models and 2020 or later MacBook Air models from being damaged when connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.

There have been several reports on Reddit from Mac users who have connected USB-C hubs and docks to their machines, resulting in the machine becoming non-functional. Affected Macs appear to go blank and unresponsive shortly after connecting the dock. Many of the users who experienced issues were using hubs and docks not purchased from reputable companies.

Many of the complaints were from M1 Mac users who had a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air, but Apple's release notes suggest other models were affected as well.

Does anyone have issues with Satechi hubs after 11.2.2?

My experiences with this update so far:

2018 i5 Mac Mini: 11.2.1 -> 11.2.2 update

I'm using triple monitors, and my third monitor stopped working. It seems I can no longer use two monitors on the same thunderbolt controller anymore. No big deal, I just rearranged my cables so monitors 2 and 3 are on separate controllers. (Monitor 1 is using the HDMI port. Monitors 2 and 3 use USB-C -> HDMI cables. Monitors 2 and 3 were on TB ports 1 and 3, now running on ports 1 and 2.)

My CPU is now running 10-20C hotter under typical load. This one is concerning to me.
