macos update 5 hrs.png

5 hours just to 'fix' Podcasts and Music. What a stitch-up.

Apple obviously thinks that it's 'not nice' to talk about bugs, things they found wrong with code that they issued, and presumably vetted, earlier. It would reassure customers though.

Indeed! I’ll reiterate my usual complaint that Apple provides totally deficient documentation for these updates.

I don’t expect an exhaustive set of release notes detailing every single fix, but the docs they release these days are almost nonexistent. There must be dozens or even hundreds of bug fixes in these point releases and they don’t document any of them.

Why is everything just a black box?

I agree with what you're saying, and I like more detailed release notes. However, to the average user, I just don't think they really care.

Trackpad palm rejection still broken where I can move the cursor with both meaty parts of my palm. Guess Apple doesn't plan to fix this. On the other hand, they've gotten external display to work with USB-C to HDMI dongle without the unclear text, flickering images and funny colors.

You can find Bug Fixes here.

The new 11.5 version of Big Sur has ruined the directory listing and renaming functions. See attached exploration and work-around.

see post #68
The faulty directory problem has been solved.
I went to Apple's chat function and was referred to Apple's analyst section, where a very patient expert spent quite a while on the phone with me. He determined that the issue was NOT in the Big Sur 11.5 operating system, but was likely caused by a faulty file among the initial launch preference files. Putting all the launch files in a new directory (to keep them from being used) solved the problem of faulty directory operation.
So kudos to the Apple staff and my computer is functional once more.

Is it safe to update for M1? 🤔

I am waiting. Right now my Mac Mini is running 11.3.1 and everything appears to be working as expected. I check the 11.5 threads periodically to see what others are saying. I am not sure how long I will wait before updating.

My 76yo father is so pissed off about this he's ready to toss his new 16" into the Gulf of Mexico.. I've asked him to try wearing fingerless gloves to prove that this is what's happening and not that "Some f'in gestures must still be on this damn thing! I've got a gesture for them!"

Sigh.

From the article: "‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.5 is likely to be one of the final updates to the ‌macOS Big Sur‌ operating system as Apple shifts its attention to macOS Monterey, which is set to be released this fall."

'One of the final updates'. Uh ... either its the final update, or not. If you parse the language MacRumors is using, pretty much ANY update to Big Sur could be called "one of the final" updates.

They would be better served to say "this may be the second to last update" or "Possibly the final update". But NOT "one of the final updates".

Just crappy use of the english language IMO.

Did you miss "likely to be"? 🤔

Capiche, capeesh, capische, etc

Capiche (ignore spell check) is the standard English spelling of the word, usually followed by a question mark, meaning do you understand?
It comes from the Italian capisci.

It's Italian, NOT "standard English", whatever Americans believe that is.

"lazy language"? 🤔Screenshot 2021-08-04 at 14.46.10.png
