Big Sur 11.6.4 is 20G417

Catalina 2022-002 Security Update is 19H1715

I remember the days when Snow Leopard was released. A new OS version was really great. Don‘t remeber if you had to pay for SL, but at least for the earlier updates one could get an update for some bucks.

Today is more like: Meh, an update? Again? Couldn‘t you just leave me alone with your da*n updates? Bugs, every year, bugs, bugs, bugs and after that, fixes, fixes fixes. Live, die, repeat e-v-e-r-y year!!!!

I like the way some Linux distros handle this. You can live on the edge or you can get LTS versions with ~8 years security fixes and you don‘t need an OS update for a new browser or new emojis. Wish Apple would slow down with UI and other „improvements“.

New OS version every 3-4 years? Release it when it is done? I don‘t want your latest and greatest, Apple. Just want a stable OS.
Yep same here. I didn't have any horrible bugs on those releases.

Quite happy with my system running Big Sur for now. Everything works fine and I cant be bothered with the hassle of upgrading every year. I actually see no reason for me to upgrade to Monterey in the near future. I will probably move OS when I move to a newer MacBook, then rebuild my current machine with a fresh copy of the latest OS at that time when I come to sell it.....which means I'll most likely skip Monterey altogether......

If it wasn’t for the removal of 32 bit support I would update to the new MacOS versions.
Surprisingly how well Monterey works on my 10 year old MBP mid-2012.

Is this m1 problem or did they back port memory leaks?
I have M1 MBA and WindowServer isn't leaking, but I'll check it periodically to see if that changes.

Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.6.4, a security fix update that is designed for Mac users who continue to use the Big Sur operating system instead of macOS Monterey.

macOS-Big-Sur-Feature-Orange.jpg

The ‌‌‌‌macOS Big Sur 11.6.4‌‌ update can be downloaded on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

Today's update comes about two weeks after the launch of macOS Big Sur 11.6.3, which was released alongside macOS Monterey 12.2. Apple usually releases new versions of macOS Big Sur alongside Monterey updates, but today's Big Sur software release is standalone.

According to Apple's release notes for the update, macOS Big Sur 11.6.4 "improves the security of macOS" and is recommended for all users.

Apple has also released a 2022-002 macOS Catalina security update for those who are still running macOS Catalina.

I got my first Mac (Mac mini refurb) in 2008 for iPhoneOS (yes, that's what it was called then) development. It came with Leopard. I seem to recall going to the local Apple Store to buy Snow Leopard for $30 I think it was. I also bought a refurb iPod touch with iPhoneOS 2.x. Upgrade to 3.x was $5 or something.

OS updates became free some time shortly after that. The good old days. Before Tim Cook. Before the Empire.

Your process memory usage seems to be ~6GB but it's showing 13GB total memory usage. You might have a different memory leak other than WindowServer.
I don't think so, because I have a lot of chrome, opera, and Safari tabs, plus quite a few running apps, some of them intel or Electron based, like VS Code, Skype, Discord, Photoshop Elements, so it all adds up (though I don't always have them all open). I'm a web developer and it saves time to have a bunch of tabs and apps open, plus I'm too lazy to do it differently.

I'm probably not alone in thinking that I can wait a while longer before upgrading from Big Sur to Monterey. Most these MacOS releases are pretty meh....nothing overly compelling to get me to upgrade right away.

So I'm glad they are still supporting previous OS with security updates

My m1 mini is on Big Sur. My M1 Pro MacBook Pro is on Monterey. I don't see any need to run Monterey on the mini. The bugs are getting worked out in Monterey - I don't change if I don't need to. I have one system on Big Sur that I am thinking of going back to Mojave on as there are two problems with Big Sur that I have on this old Intel Mac. Mojave has been the most stable release of macOS in recent years.

Is this m1 problem or did they back port memory leaks?

They backported memory leaks - my experience. Big Sur was running fine for me and then one of the maintenance releases gave me memory leaks and an annoying network issue where some websites work and some don't. A reboot clears it up but it's really annoying. I have the same problem on Monterey. Both systems have to be rebooted about once a week. I have another Big Sur system that I have to reboot once a month but I don't use it much for web browsing. I am hoping that Monterey 14.4 fixes it and maybe the current releases of Big Sur. If not, then I'm going back to Mojave.

That's a lot of RAM for WindowServer.

One odd thing is that there is no such process on my M1 mini running Big Sur 11.6.2 nor my 2014 iMac running the same version. I do see it on my 2021 MacBook Pro though but it uses about 200 MB. It did use 1 GB of RAM when I hooked it up to an external 4k monitor in the early versions of Monterey. My 2014 iMac has a dGPU so maybe that explains why there isn't that process there but I run 2x4k monitors off the mini so I wonder why I don't see that process.
