Do we need to install macOS Catalina 10.15.7 first? Or can we skip straight to Big Sur

download the update -- it should run as a separate app (not part of the system preferences app) where you'll have the option to install on top of what you've got--if that's what you want to do.

For me it's not showing on System Preferences --> Software Update.

But I found it on App Store, search for "Big Sur" on the search bar.

EDIT: it gives me an error message ("Update not found").

EDIT: 2:00, I finally got it. 12.18 gb!? And LOL! -- 16 hours remaining for the download! The servers must be pretty busy.

UPDATE: So far (at about 3:30), the update has failed twice. But evidently, 3rd times a charm. It's now downloading swiftly. We'll see how it goes....

pretty sure you just run the update -- if I recall correctly, it will install the installer app that you can do as you see fit.
