20 - 30 minutes for me (2018 MBA), download plus install, did not time it
must be the download speeds
This is after downloading and verifying the update package....
Sitting at an Apple logo with a lone progress bar slowly scrolling by.
Just rebooted with a dramatic huff of fans and now it say 8 more minutes.
It depends on the individual's specific usage case. No one here knows about yours.
The cautious person's approach would be to make a bootable clone of their current system drive to an external drive and upgrade the latter. Then try it out yourself to see if it does what you need it to do.
If you don't like it, you can simply resume booting from your regular drive as though nothing had happened.
LOL my iMac failed to download it six times "because the internet connection was interrupted". Now it is finally downloading, but extremely slow. I'm at 1,49GB out of 8,23GB with approximately 5 hours remaining 😂
That will never be fixed at this point, you'd have to get used to it, move on or get a new Mac.

Mine downloaded quick. It's the install time that has me worried!
Security / Safari updates for those of us with less up to date devices too like my High Sierra mid 2011 Mac Mini.
I hope it fixed the audio issues due to T1 chip. On my 13" MacBook Pro 2019, for instance, I often hear pop sounds, and sometimes sound is completely disabled (cannot listen to Spotify, etc.) until I restart the computer. Very bad.
Sigh. An annoying Photos.app bug (keywords losing focus after entering one keyword) and Messages losing focus on a message when first opening, has not been fixed.
When I using an app in fullscreen. My second screen is black. When I am not in fullscreen, I will see both monitors.
Enable "Screens have separated spaces" or something similar in System Preferences -> Mission Control.

Exactly but please don't apply this logic on Coronavirus. LOL
Had some issues with the download failing part way through but i eventually got it back up and running. Install probably took the usual 30 minutes or so but everything came back up with no issues at this point.
9 minutes remaining on my 15" 2017 rMBP. It rebooted 3-4 times.
Still downloading on my wife's 12" 2016 MB.

I’m still holding off on Catalina. Seems like there are still too many bugs for my taste.
