Apple Releases macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Supplemental Update With Spectre Fix

I know everybody is talking about Spectre and Meltdown and don't care about El Capitan or Sierra...

But did you noticed

Apple changed El Capitan Security update 2017-005 date?

Before this results in a boot loop when updating from build 15G17023.
Furthermore the date published on that website as July 19, 2017

And now Apple change the date: Dec 6, 2017

Someone knows if they add something new to this patch?
And If its working now if you download from that link?

December 6 is when the update was originally released. Apple had replaced Security update 2017-004 at the same URL with 2017-005 and failed to change the modification date.

These should be easier to install than the version on page 6 because they have combined the 6 or 7 installers into a single one.

Some type of bug in High Sierra and nVidia GPUs. I advise to not go to HS for now.

Benchmarking the differences between macOS 10.13.2 (17C88) and (17C205) with Geekbench v4.20 made Supplemental's performance look just fine (less than 1% computing performance difference).

Unfortunately, according to Blackmagic's Disk Speed test, my MacPro-2013's PCI-based SSD device has lost more that half of it's write performance under Supplemental (17C205). This is truly unfortunate, as this poor little cylinder was bought to quickly plow thru data. It no longer can write fast enough to keep up with it's workload output.

Eww-- this is probably going to set Final Cut Pro back by a fair margin.

I'm running HS 10.13.2 supplemental, and GTX1080 in my cMP 5,1 with the Web Driver. No "bug" here.

Try doing actual work in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign while you have Chrome open and a 2nd monitor connected.

Just updated a 2011 iMac and 2016 MBP 15". @10 minutes to install each and no stalling.

Ok try using PS CC2018, Chrome and any other application that uses the GPU.

High Sierra is useless with nVidia GPUs in a real working environment.

For some new Macs, now it’s black. (White Apple logo, white progress bar, see attachment as an example)

But after this update, the background went from black to a darkish grey. Same white logo and progress bar, except no longer a deep black background.

EDIT: Fixed it by reinstalling the update using the standalone installer. Now back to normal. And my error, in High Sierra it boots with your desktop background in the background, not the black screen from Sierra and prior.

I have a 2 year old MBP 11,5 with 2.5GHz i7 and 16GB of RAM. Installed the update and now when I try to watch an HD video, I get severe frame skipping. If I had known this would happen, I wouldn't have installed the update. Anyone who tells you there is no performance impact does not know what they're talking about.

Nothing is missing.

iMac Pro gets macos brain which no other mac gets. iMac Pro gets 7 components.

Other macs get bridge os brain and bridge os update customer which iMac Pro does not get. Other macs get 6 components.

What is unusual is that only the iMac Pro gets a firmware update and embedded os firmware whereas other macs did not get those.

It has been usual for all macs to get a firmware update for every macos update since 10.10.2. Sometimes it installs and sometimes it doesn’t. But there has always been an associated firmware update since 10.10.2.

Anyway now that apple have combined these components into a single installer on their downloads page I don’t think we need to concern ourselves with how many components there are. The only thing to discern is which one to install.

Use https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1951?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US for macs other than iMac Pro and use https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1950?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US for iMac Pro. That is all.

Leave it alone..the progress bar will finally give you a countdown during the last 18 minutes. Seems like it took 25 minutes or so to complete here.

That is some downright crappy UX. Just when Apple installers were getting slightly better at calculating the time remaining… I still remember when they came up with a fake splash screen progress bar in Tiger: https://daringfireball.net/misc/2005/04/tiger_details#waitingforloginwindow

Why couldn't they come up with a solution like that for these installers? Some semblance of progress, fake or inaccurate as it may be, is better than no [apparent] progress… Also, why did they get rid of the indeterminate progress bars? They should definitely revisit the concept, IMHO.

After doing exactly as you instructed I'm still experiencing a very slow mac and app s are freezing. Its strange as others don't appear to be encountering this issue. It was running perfectly we'll before applying the update. It was runnuing smooth, no lag, no freezing, no issues whatsoever.

Edit: Found this issue, iStat Menu was indicating 100% of my 32GB of RAM was being used. So I checked Activity monitor and the problem is with an application called Qsync, which syncs file with my QNAP NAS. I quit the process and everything is working fine.

I always forget to recommend looking in the Activity Monitor, but I'm glad you figured it out.

We’re years away from new processors which don’t have this vulnerability.
