My 15" 2.2ghz/555x/32gb was consistently running at 3.3ghz-3.5ghz through the day with temp hovering around 64-65 celsius and pushing 2 external 1920x1200 monitors/parallels windows 10/etc. It just hums along at 3.3-3.4ghz as if that were it's clock speed and I had turbo boost engaged to hold it at 3.4ghz.

Very pleased with the 2.2ghz and this update.
So then are most feeling like this update wasn't to address the Kernel Panic issues then?

Build 17G2037 is correct according to developer site.

In that case MacRumors copied Apple's mistake: the digits were transposed. It has been fixed now and says 17G2307 on the developer site.

As we await the launch of macOS Mojave this fall, Apple has quietly released an updated version of macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 that's designed for the 2018 MacBook Pro models.

The new version of the software can be downloaded directly from the Mac App Store or through the Software Update function in the Mac App Store on all compatible Macs that are already running macOS High Sierra.

According to Apple's release notes the update will improve the stability and reliability of the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and is recommended for all 2018 machines. It's not entirely clear what specific bugs or security issues are addressed in the new software, but it features build numbers of 17G2037/15P6805, while prior build numbers were 17G2208/15P6703.

Some 2018 MacBook Pro owners have experienced crackling speakers and issues with kernel panics perhaps related to the T2 chip included in the machines, so it's possible the update addresses some of these issues.

Apple in July released an initial supplemental update for the 2018 MacBook Pro models to address a problem that caused the machines to excessively throttle when doing system intensive tasks. Today's update could also potentially include further refinements to processor performance.

macOS High Sierra is reaching the end of its life as Apple prepares to release macOS Mojave, the newest version of macOS that's currently being beta tested by developers and public beta testers. This is likely to be one of the final updates to the High Sierra operating system.

macOS Mojave introduces multiple enticing new features, such as a system-wide dark mode, dynamic wallpapers that shift throughout the day, Desktop Stacks for organizing desktop files, Finder improvements like a more useful Quick Look view and support for Quick Actions, and new apps like Apple News, Stocks, Home, and Voice Memos.

[doublepost=1535512321][/doublepost]Will my 2012 MBP be rendered obsolete with this update? Will I be forced to buy the new MBP?

i use it for audio as well as gamedev and even though i will often have it hooked up to a proper soundcard once i replace my firewire one, i still need to plug in quality wired headphones on the go, just as an example. my iphone and 2012 macbook pro exhibit no audible noise plugged into the same cord (all on max volume.)

after a bit more digging i've found the source of the noise to be when the USB-C -> Displayport cable is plugged in. so that means it should be ok on the road at least as i probably won't often be plugged into a screen.

it doesn't matter if the USB-C -> Displayport is on the other side from the headphone output, it seems the signal of the thunderbolt bus is getting transferred onto the audio path somehow. so if it just shielding as you say, it may not be fixable. i will consider another cable... so many new dongles and cables for this new machine haha :D at least i have an avenue to explore i guess.

no audio stutter / corruption since the update (6 hours or so uptime) which is something! i do think the DAC sounds noticably worse than the 2012 though.

the game i'm working on seems to run choppier. i've noticed that, even at the same resolution and settings, i'm seeing worse spikes in Metal on the 2018 than on OpenGL on the retina 2012. hopefully it's just the update 'settling', but it was doing this from time to time before. it's as if this machine is constantly fiddling around with its settings to manage thermals and it causes spikes here and there where it jumps down in speed. not ideal for gamedev ... my 2012 was def more consistent, though it did drop a few fps below 60 in the busiest spots, this one manages those spots, but has consistent spikes. all this for a couple of mm of thickness.

i also don't think we'd be seeing half these issues if it wasn't for the T2. i don't even like the touchbar, will never use it unless forced to (having tried in earnest) and wish i could remove it as it causes more errors than correct entries in my workflow. it's draining battery, causing complications in the software, making keyboards less repairable, slower to achieve the same functions as before, lacks haptic feedback. the additional security layers i can take or leave tbh. the SSD speed is welcome but i doubt i'd notice the different with one half as fast.

sorry i know it's not the exact thread for this full review but it does relate to the issues seen which are hopefully being patched in this update.
Also coming from an old FireWire audio device.

I did this recently:

If you do nothing else try the DACport HD and the Mojo you wont be disappointed.

Did you notice any decrease in CPU temp after applying this supplemental update?

When I thought it couldnt go any higher. Geekbench 5400+ and 18860 multi. 13 i7/16 with supplemental 2.

Small single increase but the multi is up 600+. Scores compared with multiple runs before and after.

I know these scores have nothing to do with it and it's probably in my head but the OS seems smoother as well.

I did nothing to the settings or anything and all of a sudden at 10PM EST, I retried the install and it went though without error 602. Give it a try and see if the error is gone for you now?

I also had the 602 error. Tried downloading the update directly and installing, using safe mode, and eventually a re-install. None of those things worked. Reset the SMC and tried again and it worked! Only other difference was I didn't have it plugged in, but I'm guessing the SMC reset did the trick for me.

I still have core audio issues and audio application crashes like crazy after installing the update.

Not really. Typically hovers around 63-65 degrees celsius, but what is interesting is that it was holding it's turbo speed of 3.3-3.5ghz all day even though I wasn't really doing anything to push it, or doing anything that would require it to "turbo boost" (like opening apps). I just had the same 6 Windows Apps open, and 2 mac apps, and the processor speed just stayed pinned at like 3.4ghz. It was odd, but appreciated.

Fans stayed at around 2800 most of that time. So the fans weren't that audible and it was running (and holding) at 1.2ghz faster than the rated speed.

Will watch it again today to see if yesterday's results are confirmed or were a fluke.

I have the most recent 2018 15" i9 and have really push it to it's limits since the day it landed.

Alot of code compilation, multitasking, running VMs as well as some gaming with the graphics cranked up and I run several applications that have 3rd party kernel extensions (VMWare Fusion, Little Snitch and something else I can't remember).

Interestingly I haven't had a single kernel panic, lock up, weird noise or anything unexpected. I'm not saying those problems don't exist for some people - but it is interesting that I haven't encountered them.

Same w my wife’s i9. Problem free and well used.

Have you posted in the kernel panic thread? I think it's relevant that you haven't had any. I'm on the fence about trying for an exchange in case it is hardware. If this is really a firmware problem, it's odd that so many aren't affected.

Out of morbid curiosity, I tried this update this morning, and sure enough, same error 602 popped up again.

Fortunately, I had a case number from the last time this happened to me and called Apple and here's the fix that worked both times:

- Start up as normal.
- Log out without shutting down.
- Hold down power button for 8 seconds, even if the MacBook Pro shuts down.
- power back on if necessary and log in as normal.
- Run update.

Worked for me both times and update is installing as we speak.

Possibly, in your case the noise could be grounding related, if it only occurs when you plug in a monitor cable. Do you have a 3-prong extension cord (and a grounded wall outlet to plug it into) for your power brick? If so, it might possibly help you.

That's not good, I'd say. The CPU is supposed to drop in clock speed and core volts when it's not doing much; this reduces power consumption (and thus heat dissipation), lets fans spin down and so on, and increases battery life. If the CPU pegs at roughly 3.5GHz constantly despite load, that means it's pulling unnecessary power when it's not needed.

So, bad update, if this is the case.

You sure it wasn't doing anything in the background like processing your photos in the photos app?

I got error 600. Im gonna leave this update as everything is working fine and prob in 2 weeks it'll be Mojave.

Update : I followed the log out and restart process above. Prob just needs a restart? Installed straight away after this.

I saw the same issue - and also had it with the last 2018 patch update (thermal throttle fix). The fix for me both times was to join another WiFi network and to turn off my web proxy in network settings. And to keep trying. And to burn some incense. Eventually it worked without error.

Excellent! Finally got it to install. I didn’t change wifi because I don’t have another. But web proxy seems to be the culprit.

Bluetooth
Yes, I have frequent bluetooth Magic Mouse disconnects. I've tried changing batteries, removing/adding the device, and even using a different Magic Mouse. I'm hoping this firmware update addresses that. If not, looks like I should start a support ticket to get it on their radar.
