In my opinion the upgrade isnt worth it. Hell Sonoma all together isn't worth the upgrade. The windowServer process memory leaks like a siv. After 5 days since my last reboot it's consuming 7gb of my 8 on my m2 MBA. This is ridiculous. I have no folders on my desktop, I use terminal and remote desktop for work so I dont run a ton of apps or windows. The process just gobbles up ram and doesn't release it when other things need it. Im tired of having to check my activity monitor every few hours to see if it's time for a reboot or just having it grind to a halt every couple days. Back in the day I could go weeks or months without rebooting my Mac, now I need to basically do it daily. macOS is now pretty much no better than Windows. I love the ecosystem and aesthetic but im about to just buy a Dell XPS and dual boot in Ubuntu for work and Windows for personal stuff. If the next OS version doesn't fix this issue im going to just drop Macs and go with something that seems to be much better supported and reliable now.

@JesseBruffett It happens to have Google Chrome installed?
Google Software update causes memory leaks.

Well... I removed all Google software, I even used "App Cleaner and uninstaller" to make sure I got all the BS and for the past couple days ive been hitting my laptop hard and using my ultra wide 3440x1440 monitor alot and so far... the WindowServer process isnt going much of 400mb of ram. It does still eat 30-40 percent of the CPU though but things are running much smoother overall so far. Fingers crossed thats been the problem. Thank for the link and info!!

Anyone else having trouble downloading this? Downloads a tiny speck about 1/20th of the way done and hangs for hours. tried restarting the download, no joy.

Never mind screaming in after a reboot.

If you are already on 14.4.1 you don't need to update via OTA. You also have the option of running it from the full installer from the App Store as a download.

sadly I must report that the leak still exists, it is slower, but its still there. It took 3 days instead of 1-2 to run my memory pressure into the red. force quit the window server process and once I logged back in, the pressure was less than 10%.

Yep...pretty much where I'm at as well. Apple is definitely not unique in this, but big software publishers like Apple and Microsoft need to make their current stuff work before moving on to the next version or next "big thing", accumulating technical debt by the bushel all along the way.

I was getting problems with kernel_task bloating up, besides WindowServer, on my m2 Pro Mini, 32/1tb, but a few Sonoma updates ago that went away for me.

Also, in my first two months with the Mini last summer, the fan inexplicably vroomed up to 4,900rpm under no stress a couple times, but that has never been repeated. Never heard the fan since.

I feel like Apple has been doing this since El Cap... Every year each update seems to be 3 steps forward and 2 steps back because they dont actually fix the real issues. Also leaving things like this in place prompt people to get high spec machines so they can ignore the problems that will never be fixed.
