Apple today released macOS Sonoma 14.5, the fifth update to the macOS Sonoma operating system that launched last September. macOS Sonoma 14.5 comes more than two months after the launch of macOS Sonoma 14.4.

The ‌‌‌‌‌macOS Sonoma‌‌‌ 14.5 update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Settings. There's also a macOS 13.6.7 release for those who are still running macOS Ventura and a macOS 12.7.5 release for those who have macOS Monterey installed.

macOS Sonoma 14.5 adds a new word game for Apple News+ subscribers and allows for tracking stats and streaks of News+ games. Apple's release notes:
macOS Sonoma 14.5 includes the following improvements and bug fixes:
- Quartiles is a new and original daily word game that is now available in Apple News+
- Scoreboard in News+ Puzzles gives you access to new player data for Crossword, Mini Crossword and Quartiles, including stats and streaks

Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.

For detailed information about the security content of this update, please visit: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201222
We're nearing the end of the macOS Sonoma development cycle, and this could be one of the last feature updates that we see. Apple is already working on macOS 15, and plans to introduce it next month at WWDC.

That’s not really comparable because Microsoft treats windows like Apple used to treat Mac OS X: point updates are BIG updates.

Apple doesn’t do that anymore but they release big updates often. Too often if you ask me, because they have many lingering glitches and bugs that haven’t been resolved

Oh boy, the last time I updated my new iMac M3 that was set up with NO migration from older Mac, it got so messed up I had to do the Erase to Factory settings. I'm still gonna do it so keep fingers crossed.

The last few Windows 11 updates have ruined performance for me. Hopefully, they'll fix it eventually. For all the problems people report, macOS is still much more stable than Windows.

the "features" are a big nothing; as always the reason to update is the security fixes - the important zero-day ones probably being reported in a day or so... It is odd that, that being the case, it warrants a minor version bump (second number) rather than just a point release bump (third number). It seems very very light on anything worth the second-number bump.

The 14.5 update seems to be going back-and-forth as though there is a firmware update.
Usually every beta thru RC has a slight change to system/OS loader FW versions. The beta 4 to RC didn't this last time. Likely because of how solid this build is. Because of that the installl after the download/prep was a lot faster.

Comparison of 14.5 RC to 14.5 beta 4

macOS 14.5 RC (23F79)
  • Safari Version 17.5 (19618.2.12.11.6)
  • System Firmware Version: 10151.121.1 (M1 based Macs)
  • Darwin Kernel Version 23.5.0: Wed May 1 20:16:51 PDT 2024; root:xnu-10063.121.3~5/RELEASE_ARM64_T8103 arm64
macOS 14.5 beta 4 (23F5074a)
  • Safari Version 17.5 (19618.2.12.11.4)
  • System Firmware Version: 10151.121.1 (M1 based Macs)
  • Darwin Kernel Version 23.5.0: Wed Apr 24 21:23:50 PDT 2024; root:xnu-10063.121.3~3/RELEASE_ARM64_T8103 arm64
Apple Music/TV is still 1.4.5.36 no change

Thanks. I was being a bit lazy to look for it. They still need to do some fine tuning and make sure that there are no security problems.
