Apple today released a pair of software updates to allow Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Leopard users take advantage of the advanced mouse features of the company's new multi-touch Magic Mouse.

- Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 for Snow Leopard (63.92 MB, Requires OS X 10.6.1)
- Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 for Leopard (36.22 MB, Requires OS X 10.5.8)

The Magic Mouse has been shipping with Apple's new iMacs, which presumably already carry the update in order to allow the mouse to function out of the box. The standalone mouse, however, has yet to arrive in retail stores or begin shipping from the company's online stores, although Apple indicated that it would become available at the end of October and is currently listed as shipping in 5-7 business days in Apple's U.S. online store.

The Magic Mouse user guide notes that either the mouse software update or Mac OS X 10.6.2 is required for full Magic Mouse functionality, suggesting that Apple has been planning for a release of OS X 10.6.2 around the time the Magic Mouse becomes available. Users who purchase a Magic Mouse after upgrading to OS X 10.6.2 when it becomes available will not be required to install the separate mouse software update.

I believe this actually means 10.6.2 won't be released anytime soon.

I was about to order one until I found out it doesn't have middle click :/

i use middle click to open links in a new tab. I don't think I could live without it.

Maybe 10.6.2 will be released in november with Windows 7 support!

I was just about to say that!! With Windows 7/Vista/XP support they would sell sooooo many more then just for Macs! I would buy 1 in a heart beat!:D

But putting 2 fingers down and clicking on a link acts as a middle click I think. Am not too sure though.

I just called Apple since it's been a week since I ordered it. They told me it should have shipped today, so they upgraded me to next business day shipping free of charge! They're awesome.

I hope this means my mouse will ship tomorrow...

I agree! It's been a week since the order was placed - I'm looking forward to seeing it ship!

I am very glad to see that I'll actually have the software for it to fully function when it arrives. :D

SL 2x L?

Why is the (Intel-only) Snow Leopard download so much larger than the (Universal) Leopard download?!?

P.S., I like what happens when you try to run the Leopard installer on Snow Leopard:

Most likely containing both 32/64bit drivers.

Well, either way, it would have to contain two sets, then (Leopard contains both PPC and Intel.) Merely being 64-bit doesn't mean it takes up twice as much disk space. Especially compressed.

edit: Checked both out with Pacifist, and the Snow Leopard version contains a very large "AppKit" framework that the Leopard version doesn't include.

Still waiting for these in Ontario, Canada. Expected to arrive tomorrow.

Can't wait. I'll post a review as asap in the peripherals section. Hopefully it'll be better than the Wacom Bamboo Touch. If it isn't, I might just go back to the Bamboo Touch and force myself to give it another couple of weeks, but my initial impressions weren't great.

Restart required for a mouse driver! A windoze moment :(

This "restart is required" crap is beginning to annoy the s**t out of me with Mac OS X and it is happening more and more often.

If I wanted this for basic drivers and other minor patches I would have stuck with Windoze....

Apple, seriously.....

So it requires basically an updated API for Magic Mouse, which could explain why they wanted to do it in 10.6.2 update. but then how would it work in leopard without the updated API, unless they have two different development track? Strange.

It is likely because to what ehurly found out, it contains a large framework update, not just a driver.

Oh c'mon... A restart takes 1-2 minutes of your life, it's not a big deal. SERIOUSLY. It's so the Magic Mouse will work 100% after the driver and framework with it work well.

I with you on that!

I'm still wondering how this is going to change (are they seriously taking away the ability to middle click [3rd button] and squeeze [4th button]??):

It's a restart, get over it. It takes like 30 seconds, max.

Anyway, I can't wait until FutureShop in Canada has these!

My thoughts exactly.

I don't get it, why is that?

Am I missing something?

I picked up a new iMac for work last Friday and my first thought on the Magic Mouse was that although it was innovative and cool looking I didn't think I could get used to the low profile. Today was day three with the new mouse and I really don't think I'll be going back to my MS Bluetooth Notebook mouse 5000. The MS Mouse fit my hand perfectly but I must say for me the touch function outweighs the fit that I have been used to.

I do have a question. Does anybody know if this update enhances the tracking setting? I have mine turned all the way up and would like it to go higher (more sensitivity).
