Eh... I played with one of these in the Apple Store last night... Nice, but not worth the price. What about a wired version?

Just did a a restart in 39 seconds and I started counting as soon as I hit the restart button (are you sure you want to restart) and stopped after I typed my password to get into my desktop.

So unless you are installing Apple updates all day long, less than a minute shouldn't eat into your workflow too much.

So it requires basically an updated API for Magic Mouse, which could explain why they wanted to do it in 10.6.2 update. but then how would it work in leopard without the updated API, unless they have two different development track? Strange.

It is likely because to what ehurly found out, it contains a large framework update, not just a driver.

Totally know why it does it, 10.6.x updates fair enough also. I'm just bitching about an increasing frequency of Apple's software updates needing restarts.

Printer drivers updates, is another recent example. Our studio has Epson, Canon and HP, so we got 3 restarts out of that. itunes, which does not require a restart of windows, but does on a Mac...I'm no gonna go on..

It might be 2 mins to restart the OS, but if you are running production machines with a lot of Graphics or Sound Studio software on this is a complete pain.

Griping over. I still would not use Windows again.. I'm just gonna delay updates and do them once every few months if they need

I think Steve is done with wired mice. Once the stock of the wired "Apple Mouse" is gone, I think you'll only see wireless mice. I would guess same with keyboard eventually.

I was about to order one until I found out it doesn't have middle click :/

i use middle click to open links in a new tab. I don't think I could live without it.

Yeah, I've been using it a few days now and I feel the same. While it works quite well, without the middle click I feel I've lost functionality and it won't be long before I return to my old (non-apple) mouse (but expecting software updates will add functionality sooner or later...wishful thinking?).

Hope this means mine will ship shortly then here in the UK. The ETA is listed as Oct 28th - Nov 2nd. Though I'd be very surprised if it turned up tomorrow now. Maybe we'll be seeing 10.6.2 later this week?

GOD! I hope we see 10.6.2 sometime this week, don't understand why it is taking so long since the 2nd seed was good and the 3rd seed is for the magic mouse. Could they have not just released the 10.6.2 separate without the magic mouse update?

Once this thing actually starts doing useful gestures like Expose or View Desktop then I will be interested.

I guess I better stock up on wired mice then. I've already got a box of 5 white Apple Pro Keyboards put away. Snagged them on ebay for 50 bucks. I can't stand the "new" Apple Keyboards.

I with you on that!

I'm still wondering how this is going to change (are they seriously taking away the ability to middle click [3rd button] and squeeze [4th button]??):

Will the Mighty Mouse work with the new software? What would happen if you hooked one up to a new iMac? Would you be able to use and program all the buttons?

I do have a question. Does anybody know if this update enhances the tracking setting? I have mine turned all the way up and would like it to go higher (more sensitivity).

Nope, still the same slow a$$ tracking speed every Apple mouse has been known for.

The fact that there is an API + framework being installed is promising. Perhaps it can be hacked to add gestures?

I ordered one today. If you haven't had a chance to try one out you are missing out. This thing is ridiculous... for a mouse anyway.

Just schedule the updates all at once, like once a month, unless there's a security update, there's no need to update every time there's an update. Some of my computers do not update for a month or two before i do it. I normally only update every time there's a security update or a new point release.

This "restart is required" crap is beginning to annoy the s**t out of me with Mac OS X and it is happening more and more often.

If I wanted this for basic drivers and other minor patches I would have stuck with Windoze....

Apple, seriously.....

Please list the past few dates that an Apple software update has required you to restart.

I don't like restarting either, since I need to reopen all of the applications and files that I had open for days, even weeks sometimes. It's my workflow that needs to be restarted, not just my computer.

I hate how its not supported in 10.4, bummer.

There probably isn't enough fairy dust in 10.4 to make the Magic Mouse work.

edit: Checked both out with Pacifist, and the Snow Leopard version contains a very large "AppKit" framework that the Leopard version doesn't include.
This is Snow Leopard we're talking about: Bug fix!

Who is running this place? Are you really saying that in your "production" environment you voluntarily update your machine and complain that it takes time? Last time I checked you don't have to hit the update now button.

And if you are really running a "production" environment, why not get a copy of OS X Server or ARD and push updates at night. Or if that isn't worth it, have the employees start the updates before they leave. That is what I would do if I had a "production" environment.

Then you finish your post with a logical solution. Kudos. And I think you are grossly exaggerating which updates require a restart. Most of the ones you mentioned I have no had to restart for, on any of the machines in the studio I support.

It's a major update with over 150+ bug fixes, they require a lot of testing to do. Apple is not going to release an update just because you can't wait.

Also, what are you smoking? The third seed wasn't just for the mouse, it fixed the remaining known issue that was in the second seed and some other changes. They always release multiple seeds, even without any known issues. It'll probably take another couple of weeks before they'll release it.
