I tried using Avid, but it's so ugly that I couldn't get over it. It looks like a PC program from the 80s. With design that bad I just wanted to vomit all over my keyboard.

You beginner. Avid provides a PP (Puke Protector) for its users.

I would never have thought of doing as you suggested. I was wondering why the application was showing as being available for "install" but when I tried it advised me that it was already installed.

No problem. This really was annoying though...one of the benefits of FCP-X was being able to easily download and update through the Mac App Store. Hopefully we won't have to do this with every update.

When I uninstalled FCP to reinstall I was thinking to myself; "what if something happens to my old events from FCP X? will I be able to open them again? ...if not, I will be screwed!". I pretty much crossed my fingers, held my breath and jumped in it.

Worked out just fine though.

Same for me, a £3200 Mac Pro, 32GB ram and Quad Core and I cannot even update FCP X?????? - load of bollocks that my graphics card is out of date after 3 years.

The Radeon HD 2k and 3k series don't support shared memory so OpenCL is unavailable on them. The older nvidia 8800 GT and 8600 support shared memory so they have OpenCL support.
